Hi Raymond,

I believe you are talking about discrimination? The govt will be coming out with a set of guidelines for employers regarding older workers. (Some time this year.)

As for foreign workers itself, yes I agree with you that the policy is too wide-open. In the past, FTs were really FTs - well-qualified, had expertise in particular fields and industry, etc.

But nowadays, you see so-called "FTs" everywhere - even unskilled ones. I am actually quite worried about the long term consequences of this policy.

Economic well-being is one thing but social and society's tone is another. I agree with the WP's Sylvia Lim when she said that economic prosperity does not necessarily lead to well-being.

We have to keep this in mind.

Regards,

I would like to point out a problem that is faced in my organisation, which is a MNC.

Consider a freely-competitive company, where locals and immigrants have equal chance of getting recognised and getting up the corporate ladder.

Immigrants have the tendency to work extremely hard and don't mind the lower pay. They start from the bottom most and work themselves to the top. They do differ from locals in that they are real workaholics and they don't mind tough work. They are long stayers in the organisation. And the organisation is very happy to employ these people.

However, once they reach the top, they are unable to manage the organisation well. They have a problem socialising with locals and would appear unfriendly. Unable to mix well with the locals, they tend to get more of their own nationality to join the company, and form their own team in the company. They believe they are better than the locals, because they can complete things in less time. Projects deadline are cut short unrealisticly, and they believe a short number of workers can also be able to complete the project in time (just like them). Naturally, their workers are stressed, unhappy and start to leave. My team is falling apart now.

What is the problem here?

I am also seriously concern whether the certifications of the immigrants are real or are they bought in overseas. I once heard from my colleague that resume can be fake. As long as you can make your employer convinced, you can get a high pay job. I believe some of my managers did that before, and there is no rigourous checks on their overseas qualifications.

The HR are very laxed in their checks, only ensure that people are brought in, interviewed and do the administration for the immigrants working permits. The interview is actually done by the manager who is himself an immigrant. There is some biasness in selection. Inherently, he will prefer his own nationality to be in his team and not the locals. Indeed it is.

The most frightening thing is, my organisation actually employs immigrants who come from nations which have high crime rates, bribery and riots.

Seriously, whether immigrants can contribute to Singapore. I am not really convinced.

The above are all my observations, based on true facts.

Anyone please comment.
