Hi Gerald,
ASEAN is just an old gentlemen/ladies club where nice old men/women meet annual to exchange pleasantries and pat each other on the back.

How else would you explain that despite Myanmar's atrocious human rights records and the disgraceful way Daw Aung San Suu Khyi is incarcerated, Myanmar still remains a respectable member.

Since my last post on this in mid-2006 http://nofearsingapore.blogspot.com/2006/07/does-myanmar-deserve-asean.html,

nothing has changed.

Waste of time and money.

Free Aung San Suu Kyii!!

Hi Live..

I do agree with you that ASEAN as it now stands, lacks the will to do more - politically, economically, and environmentally.

It seems that everytime ASEAN meets, it's just a photo opportunity for the politicians to dress up in ethnic uniform, smile and interlink hands superficially.

Perhaps it is the regional NGOs which should get together and kick ASEAN's butt - much like what the NGOs elsewhere do for the WTO and World Bank, for example.

Regards,
Zz

Asean lacks leadership, resolve and determination to ensure unity and cohesion. There is no common ground. Even an economic incentive is also not viable because of the diversity of interests and divergence of views. The collective will and collective wisdom are far from the light at the end of the tunnel.
