GST is equivalent to UK VAT, basically a consumption tax. The idea behind it was the rich spent more on luxurious goods so they indirectly pay more tax. Equally the poor had to pay more as well. A more equatable tax regime is income tax. Tax those who earn more then say $500,000 a year at a higher band. Exclude common essential items like children clothing, books, medicine and those on lower income. Gahment spending on non essential should be cut as well. Each gahment department should be encouraged to reduce spending by say 10%. The saving could be used for other essential services such as health care.

These P65 MPs are nothing more than the PR front of the PAP and are specifically selected and instructed by the ruling gerontocracy to engage in winning the hearts of the people who are finding the ways of the elders more and more unappetising. Naturally the P65s are going to be nice folks, smile sincerely, dance hip hop, shake your hands warmly and so on. But it doesn't change a thing and the PAP is not going to listen. Been to such forums in the past. End of the day action speaks louder than words.

Not only is the intended 1% cut in corporate tax immaterial, it is actually absolute SPIN by the pap government.

This <a href="http://www.mof.gov.sg/budget_2006/budget_speech/downloads/FY2006_Budget_Highlights.pdf" rel="nofollow">document</a> by the MOF,

States specifically that "the Marginal Effective Tax Rate of Singapore is the lowest in 36 surveyed countries including HK (whose headline corporate income tax rates are lower than that of Singapore)".

Refer pages 6 and 7 of this document.

It even goes on to quote that "METRs are a more comprehensive measure of the tax burden faced by companies because it takes into account all the features of a country's corporate tax regime..."

So there, aboslute SPIN.

Hi David,

Yes, it is true that they do consider different views. But whether they really take these views into account when formulating policy is another question. Also, yes, it would be good for more singaporeans to attend such dialogues sessions - if nothing else, at least it will give us some inkling into the thinking of the younger leaders.

Regards,
theonlinecitizen

They seem sincere and willing to consider different views even sharing their thougts. Must say I have a good impression of these P65 MPs so far. I would try to attend their dialogues in future.

If they dare to engage the public on a weekend at say HDB Hub under some tents to protect their million dollar skins I'm sure they would see a bigger turnout.

But no, they prefer to engage kids in television studios with pre-approved scripted questions, to say they are preaching to their choir is surely an understatement.
