Sadly many Sinkapoearn do not have a sense of charity yet. People are too busy working hard to look after their own family. The society is always on the move and many worked hard to save to buy a house, car and send their children for further studies. I was an ex Sinkaporean and I understand the pressure and burden that Sinkaporean carry with them each day. With the recession on at the moment and the fear of being replaced by a cheaper FT, many Sinkapoearn lived in fear of losing their job. There is no easy answer to the problem as the society as it is now , was in the making for years.

I would have concluded the best thing a Singapore Citizen can do for his countryman is to vote for the alternative parties.

Hi ian,

In your blog, you said: "The problem is, people who are doing ok or well tend to say that the poor or those complaining should do more for themselves. That is presumptuous. Who is to say that they are really not trying?"

I agree with that view. There are many elderly folks who slogged hard all their lives and gave everything they had to their kids - only to be abandoned or ignored by those same kids when they have grown up.

So, to say that they 'did not save enough when they were young' or that they 'did not handle their money well when they were young' is, like you said, presumptuous.

By the way, thanks for visiting theonlinecitizen and for taking the time to post your comments... :)

Regards,

The fact that there are people needing help desperately is a strong enough reason for the governmental machinery to start working and not going back to statistics and brush asides the issue. The government has an obligation to its people to take care of the weak. Within the lowest 10% percentile there are some who can make ends meet but there are many who can't. Are the government to turn a blind eye and pretends they do not exist?

Hi Vofau,

It's really encouraging that you are gonna do your little bit to help the less fortunate.

Many charities are under the <a href="http://www.ncss.org.sg/ncss/index.asp" rel="nofollow">National Council of Social Services</a> (NCSS).

In my view, it would be best to just take a walk in those areas where the elderly congregate in your neighbourhood and approach them. From my experience, they are rather friendly and welcoming.

One of the places you might want to visit are the blocks in Hougang Ave 2 / 3 - blocks 2, 3, 4, 5. There're many elderly folks there who live alone in one-room rented flats.

Alternatively, you can do a search <a href="http://app.mcys.gov.sg/web/serv_dss_disability_main.asp?Services_Id=7" rel="nofollow">here</a> for VWOs.

Regards,

I am very offended with George Yeo's remark to about the lower 10% figures. All he does is merely brush it aside with some nonsensical remarks and statistics about how "well off" they really are. He should really step down from his ivory tower and take a deep hard look at reality .... or will that offend his high and mighty ego to be among commoners?

Your article has inspired me to do something different for Chinese New Year this year. Instead of just stuffing ourself with food and thinking only of ourselves and loved ones, I would really like to help out there people in need. Can you please help me touch base with these non govt charities.

Thank you.
