I will work as long as I am competant in my present employ. No one is going to tell me when to retire. If they fire me, I will start my own business. Retiring late does not make you die early. Retiring early makes you die early; Look at clint Eastwood, 80 and still going strong. Kudos to him.

Those who retire later do not die younger. That is a mmyth. I know womeone who is 71 and is still working full time and they are very healthy. It's the ones who retire early that die early. The have lost the purpose for life.

That actually a situation most of us should look towards even though it does sound a little horrid.

I have a 91 year old dad who retired at age 55. I can tell you that live is nt easy at age 91,,,even with farily good health.

We should all look towards working longer or somethow expending our lives....rather then to fallow away.

Living into ripe old age in Singapore is not a blessing, even if the State wants to care for you, it is still no blessing. Imagine these; due to the prevailing social trend of living independent of parents, most offsprings, married and not, stay away from parents the moment they can survive on their own, the reason to do so is privacy. When grandchildren are born, they are hardly bridges to connect the first and second generations but sources and causes of disagreements and disputes. If one is unlucky to be afflicted with chronic medical conditions, few are lucky to have child(ren) to tend to his/her needs. This is the facts of life in Singapore, to be abandoned by State will never be as bitter as to be abandoned by ones' own offspring(s). The worst, which are common, is when the mother becomes the maid and the father becomes a burden till the days they die.

Many Singaporeans don't have the luxury of retiring early. So does that mean that many will have shortened lifespan? If so, then the average lifespan of Singaporeans in the years ahead will be lower. Which would mean that this could indirectly "help" the aging population problem i.e. less old age persons for the society to support? Is that wat MM means when he opined that with stronger economic growth, things becomes more manageable?

[...] The Online Citizen Statistics, including Boeing Aerospace’s, support the second conclusion, i.e. people who are still slogging away at the daily grind after 65 usually die within 18 months of retirement. Those, like I, who retire at 55 or earlier, tend to survive into their 80s (see summary of study below). [...]

Why let the government to control your life ?
Take control of your own life and decide for yourself when you want to retire.

Presently I am retired and only 56 years old. I make use of my CPF money to play shares to make some dollars for my monthly expenses. See my blog in http://kewkahfatt.blogspot.com/index.html .

Let's assume that most, through lofty learnings, can afford early retirement so they can enjoy the riches of intangible pursuits( blessed to be out of being rats in a race with an invisible finish line), what do you think will happen to our/global economy(with their exodus)?

Dream on! The state will decide, through economic manipulation and legislation, on your beginning and your end in order to perpetuate eternal consumption to keep the MATRIX alive!

It is jobs that maketh you and it shall be your jobs that see you to your grave!
