After listening to the entire speech, I found myself agreeing with most of the points that PM raised. I then realised the reason for this is that it the topics covered in the speech were very "narrow" -- and steered clear of controversial topics that have characterised previous Rally speeches (e.g. casino, Stayers-quitters, justifying his visit to Taiwan, etc).

It is because they are authoritarian power. More than 66% of Singaporeans give them that power.

Look how long they’re taking to change the law on “party political films”

The question is why it take so long to change something while so quick to change others? This unwillingness on PAP part to make changes is eroding the chance of peaceful democratic reform in Singapore. It is not good to the society.

Sarek,

I don't think we can expect the PAP to make any big changes in the political sphere. Look how long they're taking to change the law on "party political films", which is something MM Lee said would happen. And he said it in 2003!

Thus, I think we have to credit the PM for the invite to the opposition MPs. It's not an earth-shattering gesture but one which is welcome, nonetheless.

Regards,
Andrew

opposition MPs and NMP were invited to the rally is typical PAP style of making token action that really has no consequence at all. We don't see real actions like giving opposition MPs the CCC adviser role like the PAP MPs.

The papers stated opposition MPs and NMP were invited to the rally. This is something different of PAP style.
They relenting or softening ?

Overall, the speech is nothing. He just wants to manipulate the rules, that is all. Problems still cannot be solved.

It is the same kind of speech year after year - Singapore did well, Singaporeans must change their mindset, Singapore cannot compete without the foreigners or foreign investments and there must be sacrifices made for the raining days etc etc.

In this way, all the problems will be covered up by a nice picture painted.

Ageing population is a burden to the state.

What he did not say are these :

"In order to continue running the government and pay for the lesser number of babies and increasing proportion of ageing population, there will be problems in taxing and funding for high costs of running the government and paying for retired ministers' life-long million-dollar annuities caused by years of pushing for their own pay increases, life-long rewards and extravagant public spending, at the expense of providing for social and medical needs of the people who have contributed to the national coffers all these years.

So to solve all these future problems, Singaporeans must change their mindset and not to expect to retire too early (without necessarily guaranteeing their re-employment after 55) so that whatever happen they must sacrifice again this time by collecting their retirements later until 67,

Our leaders have really lost their touch of compassion being too comfortably provided for by the citizens and losing all their sense of understanding the plight of many who are reaching retirement age but with their prospect of living their fruitful retiring years dashed.

Same sentiments...I was wondering when he mentioned Hougang, exactly which Hougang was he referring to... and increasing 1% interest rates for CPF members for the first 20k comes with a condition, that is the limitations on own private investment which I think its ridiculous... Our PM still thinks that we cannot manage our own money.
