Multiraciality? Singapore's demographics aren't that diverse. But you are right, one does appreciate it when one is away. It is not the security ... there is an "sentiment X" feeling one cannot put one's finger on.

Very well said, Zheng Xi. It's like that song sung by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Patriot (watch it at "TOC's Video Collection", left sidebar of this blog):

"And I ain't no communist
And I ain't no socialist
And I ain't no capitalist
And I ain't no imperialist
And I ain't no democrat
I sure ain't no republican either
I only know one party, and that is freedom
I am,I am,I am...

I am a patriot,and I love my country
Because my country is all I know"

It is only when we are away from Singapore that we start to really appreciate what it stands for. The security, the multi-raciality, the efficiency of the police (well sometimes they are not, but I'll gloss over their inefficiencies as compared to other Asian nations') and the cleanliness of the streets (in general).

Happy National Day, my brothers.

Nationhood and sovereignty are superficial. Societies and cultures matter, not political lines drawn on a map. I love Singapore because I have a cultural attachment to this country. It is sort of inexplicable. But I can divorce my political loyalty to it and my cultural loyalty to the same.
