Here's something I've entitled 'A Silver Surfer In His Prime':

We thought we had a child trying
To outshout the echo inside his head,
And went, but to catch a glimpse of us,
An image of another near dead.

He sees fuzzed images
Behind those frosty panels,
Tries to move on or away,
Like quick melting silver.

Off the top of his head
Bodies knock one against the other;
Doesn’t see he’s been baited,
A case of poor sight, likely myopia.

In this myth of perennial winter,
There isn’t any tree, loft up to be high in,
No nest of a bed, no flowers.

(Some fruit p’raps, dried peach
Plucked years back by sweet sparrows,
For him when awaken to give a peck or two.)

See, he isn’t made of glass or mercury
But of flesh, living as those messages;
An amorphous one, half-hunched
Or -standing, shrivelled mostly,

That feeds, sleeps and doesn’t mate.
Hasn’t much of a chirp either,
Dribbling a little, on what shape
A bit of a tremor,

‘Lynched one, you can neither an eagle
Nor phoenix be. Keep that grey matter,
Those tufts of hair, specky of speckies,
And go be some other, anybirdy.’

It's time the millionaire ministers ease up on petrol tax too.

For the sake of their sanity, they should also not pop too much 'economic viagra' into their system. Third world leaders maybe impress with our 'rising' number of millionaires by playing the property market to the advantage of the rich. This is because many of these old leaders are on viagra too and are blind to the housing disparity here or developing in their own country as well.

It may do them some good to visit our new landscape in East Coast.

I am sure they will be impressed with our 'new beach homes' there - before they clean it up that is.

Hi Sze Hian,

Another great article from you.

Too bad there won't be any replies, let alone solutions, from our world class ministers. In a society like ours which is obsessed with statistics, it is sad that non of the "people-elected" MPs put the Finance Minister to the sword with such cold hard figures.

I understand the ministers' bonuses are pegged to GDP growth, but is that GDP figure used adjusted for inflation?

Where is the moral integrity of a government who can watch a higher percent of its people struggle with basic living while its own pockets get overfilled?

While the great man, yes he is great for I believe that he will go down in history as the greatest man in history to have established complete control and ensure the success of his progeny, has claimed that our CPF returns are as good it gets and has challenged people to prove him wrong. I am sure the CPF board is not going to allow anyone to withdraw his money to invest and get better returns. Yes it's all talk and threats but for once I would like to see the best paid asses put their money where their mouth is. It's one thing to declare that a revolving door policy will not work but the question is for whom, the general population or the people in power. If Chile with all its problems can deliver better returns, what is the benchmark are our peiple in power setting. We are so good at seeting benchmarks for salaries for Ministers, what about deliberables. In 1960's a Cambridge educated bloke and fool everyone with his jargon but come on we are no idiots now and yet we are treated as such. But that's only 33%, the balance 66% are either still living in the 60's or are the ones who are enjoying the spoil with the extended networks relatives, friends, elites, cronies, foriegners and lap dogs

This is my question to all this is to those who insist PAP is the best option Singapore and Singaporeans have...

Is PAP really the best option Singapore and Singaporeans have?

Perhaps the opposition, as how they are now, may not be good enough.

But hey, given the prevailing political environment where all necessary freedom for any alternative party to organize itself effectively is totally absent, you will never see any party better than PAP because before it gets there, it will be stopped.

The whole picture seems somewhat like this... Being in a choppy deep waters but with only one bad but fanciful float and other deflated floats, but the rescue refuses to throw in a proper float or let you inflate the deflated floats. Within a matter of time, you are just gonna sink with that bad float though its the BEST float amongst all the options the rescue have given you.

Hi Mr Leong

Great article again...

What is also worrying is our so-called CPF nest egg...

If the CPF rate is expected to remain below inflation, then we are literally screwed...

I think it would also be great if you can examine if there is a greater impact of inflation on the lower income people given that they are more likely to put their hard earned money in savings or fixed deposits (savings rate around 0.25%) - I think they will suffer a triple whammy...
