The point i was trying to raise was to see the situation from the other side, emphatise with the crazy couple and to put myself in their shoes, how would I react, being the centre of attention and in a potentially volatile situation.

i didnt know what happened earlier or after, except for the events as described by the young blogger. The comments i posted were based on those videos i saw, and the comments she made. I didnt agree to her linking this with a “foreigners are all ill-mannered people” theme, and the comments that she is seeking from the public – which is to further stir up this “foreigners are ill-mannered” theme. Mahaguru even said something along the lines of “ang moh worshipper”.

i was calling for some levelheadedness.

But you have missed the points i was trying to make and you picked apart what i said and used words like “total distortion of facts”. I may have missed out on certain points, or made a wrong analysis or given a wrong analogy by YOUR benchmarks, but i wasnt out to distort anything.

But you’ve clearly have made a judgement on the matter. Your further reaction and the words you used further showed that you are not prepared to see the flip side of the situation.

which led to my “immature” reaction to let you win, as you put it. I shall end my posting on this matter, because i no longer aim to discuss with someone who has taken on a personal hit on me, without even knowing who i am. And i’m the one who’s supposed to grow up? :-)

We Singaporeans seem to carry a lot of angst and passion. Indeed the reaction to this incident, reading from ST Forum and the blogosphere, gives the Government food-for-thought about we being a “nanny state” and “public discourse” and “freedom of speech”.

Let’s all hope that posts by Princess Michie and the reactions to it will make the Government rethink the FT policy.

First you claim that the crowd jumped on the couple, which they clearly didn’t.

Then you raised a clearly inappropriate analogy and claimed that the crowd was antagonistic for which there is no evidence.

Being refuted, finally you take the immature stance of “ok, you win. you must have been at the scene from start to finish.”

Although I was not at the scene from start to finish, anyone see clearly from the video that the bystanders were not bullying the couple. You claim otherwise, but are unable to provide any evidence or grounds for your claim, therefore you are distorting the available facts.

And Aygee, this isn’t about anyone winning or losing. Grow up.

The police wrote off the incident and couldnt care less to comment. They also must have had an “Angmoh worshipping” mentality too, then?

If everyone is the same, regardless of what colour, then shouldnt we afford them some semblance of fairness – rather than calling for their heads? a fair hearing from both parties and then we come to a conclusion?

I’ve been called many things in my life – but an Angmoh worshipper…wow…thats new.

i say good luck to Singapore if its people carry this sense of hatred in their hearts.

and got surrounded by passive but antagonistic onlookers. It will be absurd to turn around and suddenly and accuse the locals of “bullying” me after I had punched two of their girls.

Futhermore, there is no evidence in the video of any of the surrounding onlookers being “clearly antagonistic”.

To claim that they were bullying the the couple is not just exaggeration but a total distortion of facts.

rather than focus about the rude tourists, how come no one is asking why such an old man still has to do backbreaking labour to earn money? isnt it about time he enjoy his golden age? shouldnt we be taking care of him, so that he doesnt have to work, and open himself to such tourists?

some european and asian cities have trishaws. notice that they’re not operated by old people. go and visit other countries and see what their senior citizens are doing.

Sigh- all the angst and energy of our young people are focused on all the wrong things.

“Angmohs having an attitude that they’re better, cocksure and right..” well, if you’re still in school now, when you do join the workforce, you might just change your mind about that.

Angmohs-get-away-with-it attitude? noone’s asking you to be cowed, meek and shy yourself, u know. If they’re more vocal and confrontational, and they eventually get what they want, then there’s something for YOU to think about.

If you really believe that Singaporeans cared enough about Burma, and u disagree to those visiting students, prove it.

if you think those Brits misbehaved, you might want to ask about the singaporeans who misbehaved when they travel – Ask any NSman who’s done training stints in Thailand and Taiwan. Ask them what they did on their R&R. YOu might want to think about the hawkers and shopowners who charge foreigners extra.

the short of it – if you think you’re better than an angmoh, stop complaining, but rather show it. stand up and be counted. Go out there and compete. dont keep asking the govt to take care of you.

Xyn, look, i’m not on anyone’s side. Come on…what if u and your partner, say, when you’re travelling in Beijing or KL, started quarreling with 2-4 people (because we only see that young man and the uncle but the girl blogger said she was with a bunch of friends?), but surrounded by many other onlookers who are not saying anything but clearly are antagonistic towards you, you tell me thats not bullying?

i think that crazy couple is just defensively reacting to the situation they’re in.

I think its just an unfortunate event that happened to Princess Michie and her friend, and if she wants to post it on her blog, fine. but for everyone to repost, and especially disappointing to even see TOC reprinting it, and then STOMP sensationalise it, it stinks of an “anti-foreigner” campaign – esp when linking this to the trishaw uncle story.

in my opinion, here you have a highly popular and very attractive, sweet young blogger, complaining about how she was “wronged”, “i’m so young and fragile, (i’m princess michie after all) why is this couple jumping on me?”, and clearly trying to gain sympathy using the “anti-angmoh” theme.

UNTIL i hear the story from the police, or from the crazy couple themselves, i CANNOT be sympathetic to this sweet, oh-so-fragile blogger.

The couple, though crazy they seem to be from these videos, something MUST have happened for them to snap in such a way as described by the girl blogger. The angmoh gentleman looks like he has a very meek demeanour. For that man to allegedly jump on teenagers, well, let’s find out first what made him do what he did, before we come to any conclusion.

and btw, Singaporeans are not the only people in the world who speak hokkien.

I remember the ST Forum post about an indian lady who was not served properly and she links it to Singapore not being a nation yet, and sucking up to our colonial past. Its just POOR SERVICE! dont link it to racist, foreigner-hating diatribe.

as Celluloidreality says, we’re no angels when we’re overseas too. AND…with all this go on blogosphere..one day, when you travel or go on business overseas, you feel like you’re hard-done-by, you wonder why people dont like singaporeans, think again about what we blog and how we react and comment to small incidents like this. you’re telling the world you’re a foreigner-hating people.

As the story is as yet uncorroborated, it would be irresponsible to make allegations, especially with a clearly racial undertone.

Believe me, we’re no better.

First the trishaw uncle got bullied by those ang moh tourists. Come here as tourists, then they cheat him, and made fun of the old man, rubbing salt to the wound. Telling us that they can come here and cause trouble, and then leave.

Then there is the international students come here to show at Shangila Asean meeeting they are here to protest against Burma because Singaporeans are too can’t be bothered. Telling us that they can come here and cause trouble, and then leave.

Then there is ang moh, the bf of a SPG, who dared attack a local girl in broad daylight in the heartlands! Telling us that they can come here and cause trouble, and then leave.

What is this “ang moh can get away with it attitude”? I have enough if it.
