"would you want to have kids if the cost of living is so high, property prices going up, cost of food, etc…"

Yes, if only I could. It is a matter of lifestyle choice. How do we explain the case of couples who chose to have kids? I believe they are in the same boat, some may be worse off than we are.

We can choose not to have kids, but I wouldn't blame the problem wholesale on the government. We have the responsibility too. That is my point.

RH:
1. The somewhat outdated statistic of [only] 74% of the population being Singaporeans is far more alarming that it seems. Firstly, the number is compiled from much older databases so the truth may be far less than 74%. Secondly, the 74% INCLUDES HORDES OF 'INSTANT' SINGAPOREANS, that is, those given citizenship within very short time, including top athletes to bring in golds, the very rich who literally buy their citizenship, and those well qualified by degrees or rare skills who are needed to man the economy.

2. So the true number of local born and bred Singaporeans may by now be <50%! We are now the 'foreigners' in our own land, dispossessed by the hordes of foreigners the myopic LIE KY LHL PAP govt have gambled on to grow the economy at the expense of almost every other social consideration.

would you want to have kids if the cost of living is so high, property prices going up, cost of food, etc...

if you look at the macro views, you will find that this baby problem is going to be a nightmare for Singapore and Singaporeans in time to come. Just like a human system where the blood cells are useless (old and aging population) and we constantly need new injection of fresh blood ('foreign talent') from other sources. try to imagine the effect of pumping in new blood and pumping out old bloods.

As what 'carbang4' correctly pointed out, 'economic ants' (best that I've heard so far) is what Singaporeans really are. To add on, we are going to be the 'ants' that will be building the beautiful resort island for the rich.

I'd like to comment on two aspects - babies and emigration.

The former problem is not wholly the fault of the government. We need to admit that our current generation of young couples have to play their part too. If they choose not to have babies, can they blame the government for looking overseas? Do they even have the right to criticize? The choice is theirs.

As for emigration, just look at the Ministry of Education. Why is it that they have to constantly replenish their pool of teachers? Because they fail to address the needs/concerns/expectations of those who have left. That is to say, we will have to constantly replenish our pool of talents (including foreign ones). Is this a good solution? No, it's just a quick fix and it will get worse, unless we stop and think about ways to retain them to show we value them.

the massive de-constructive and re-constructive program necessary to accommodate an influx of new money will be welcome morphine to irresponsible wealth . the painful ramification after the exuberance will mostly be borne by old money. once vitiated, it will be irreparable and irreversible.

why do you then suppose men without shame and conscience will yield to reasoning and even care at all? not over your worthless dead bodies for certain. their leadership is guided by one's prosperity and grandeur vision seeded in man's hollow pride enshrined. they are agents of virulent good and evil. they give but also exact a pound of flesh from you.

as long as the stench of money follows them, can we really trust them?

The PAP only sees the population as "economic units" or to put it in lay language, "worker ants". After all the Mentor Minisiter once refered to the local population as "lumpen masses".

I don't really think it matters to them what the proportion of foreign born residents to locals is as long as there are enough "economic units" to make up what they call the critical mass to keep the wheels of the economy turning. As James L says, this is what you get when you have a mercenary governement that's only concerned with how much money they make for themselves.

They've failed in this like in many other issues. That's what you get when you have inept greedy cronies in government, rather than passionate people who want to serve their country to improve the lives of the common people.
