Whatever else we may say or think of YSL, from my perspective, he was acting hypocritically when he voted for a PAP candidate.

Many comments about the action of YSL focussed on the rights and wrongs of his voting action and whether it was wise of him to openly speak about it. Of course such comments seemed to have overlooked the kind of mindset that runs in the current leadership of the WP.

What is upper most in the minds of the WP's leadership is this desperate attempt to be seen as "credible". To the leadership in the WP, to be credible means to be seen to be above party politics and think for the good of the Nation.

I would have no doubt when it comes to the opportunity to distance him away from the SDP antics and thus demonstrate his respectability, he choice of vote would not have gone amiss. At the same time, it would demonstrate to wavering PAP supporters that the WP is not a scary monster like the nasty SDP.

Of course, at the same time, he must not seen to be rocking the opposition cause hence his somewhat clumsy attempt to portray his even handedness by seemingly having his party's electoral chances subject to "objective" assessment.

In essence, YSL's action is very much in keeping with the strategy of the WP. The real question has to be whether the strategy will work.
