A 5-minute tour of a block of rental flats in Singapore.

It looks as if the block has not been cleaned or re-painted for years.

It smells and is dirty, with electrical wires hanging loosely at some parts.

The question that comes to mind is:

What is the town council of the area doing?

What was shown on d ‘one-room block flats’, is being totaly biased. I (neutral) am a proud ‘one roomer’, for 12 years. Which is subsidised n fabulously clean, well maintained and was recently upgraded. I am an unmarried senior citizen, with medical worries n am gainfully self-employed. Who is not qualified to buy one from HDB n am unable to afford one from d open market. As I don’t earn much.

I have no complaints whatsoever,(even if I had, it’s attended to quickly), and am very happy n contended to be living in a clean, healthy n friendly enviorment, with people of many races. The one-room block I live in is washed regularly, with a lift on every floor n an emergency button in every household. Which is elderly friendly.

It may not be obvious to many viewers of this show, that the block cud be due for upgrading soon. We waited for our turn, for upgrading! In d meantime our block was well maintained by d residents n town council.

Most importantly residents living in that block shown, should maintain d cleanliness. (How many times can d poor Banglas sweep n wash d common areas for d residents living in a subsidised flat.) Of course, not forgetting d persistent, stubborn salesmen who keep dumping flyers in a one room block too.

Furnitures shown occupying d common corridors, should not be there at all.

What can d authorities do after having given several warnings to d elderly occupants who can be stubbornly holding on to their overflowing possessions outside. Some of them can be plain stubborn n it’s too late to educate them. Except to live in harmoney. Maybe these stubborn people ought to be put in prison n taught to maintain a ‘living enviorment’. Or maybe give these people summons. If they can’t pay up, they should than be executed by d firing squad.

Of course than d biased n ignorant bloggers will have a great day, reporting sad n sorrowful stories like: ” One Roomer Occupants Bullied”. For d whole world to read a biased report, decieving d poor readers. Come on dud get ur movie right!!

    hilary,
you should not say it is biased just because you are lucky to stay in a flat that is well-clean etc. How about others ? Do spare a thought for others. Just because you get such wonderful service doesn’t imply the rest do.

That is a harsh statement from a Singaporean. Only when we start to live in empathetic towards other can we have a gracious society.

Though I do agree with you that some ‘old’ folks do hold to their possession due to their own insecurity and distrust of the environment. They holding on to their possession is due to their mindset that if one day no one took care of them, they have at least possession to keep them alive or accompany them. Shocking ? But it is true when I speak to them. Let us not judge or deprive them because they have greatly contributed to building Singapore in the past.

    Maybe I’m old fashioned but….

A “senior citizen” who lives in a 1-room flat who uses terms like “ur” (your), d (the), n (and) and cud (could). I’m in my 30s and even I don’t write like that. Calling other senior citizens stubborn, and suggesting a firing squad for those who can’t pay their fines?

I think “hilary” is not even 20, never mind a senior citizen. Oh wait, it IS the school holidays now right? I rest my case.

Time to brush up on your spelling kid. And try to think while you read the Straits Times and watch CNA, instead of swallowing their message whole, will you?

OS, it didn’t take long to figure out the cracks in Hilary’s tale, hehe.

  5. Spoof? 2 June 2008

I think Hilary was trying to spoof a pro-PAP supporter? it’s so outrageous he must be a spoof…hahahahaha

  6. Hilary,

I am not sure why you said the video is “totally biased”. Nowhere in the write up did we say it was of all rental flats in S’pore. The video is of only one block of flats, as is made clear. And the video doesn’t lie either. The block is dirty, filthy even and if you watch the video, you’d also wonder when the town council last washed, cleaned or painted the block.

  7. hilary 3 June 2008

ANDREW-Yes u r right, d video does’nt say all rental flats. The caption below d photo can be decieving.”How do our poorest Singaporean live? When was the last time the town council painted or washed the block?Take a look at this video.”- it says.
A person who does not have time to watch d whole video, may be under d impression all our ‘one roomer’ poorest Singaporeans live dangerously, in filth n
squalor. Also, nowhere does it say d location n number of d shown block. Do u have an ulterior motive to omit these vital information?
Wud it not be easier to phone that respective town council to find out why it is a messed-up block. If u r not getting any cooperation from them than u should bring ur concerns to d respective MP. Afterwhich u wud be able to put a fair n unbiased report in TOC, with all d pros n cons. About poorest Singaporeans n their filthy block.
I am a poor Singaporean too, which is no choice of mine. I am not brooding over it but I try to make d best of my life n living conditions. Although there r cleaners to keep d block clean, maintaining d cleanliness of d block much depends on d residents themselves.
To be fair to many people who r really doing a fine job, like d town council. They need commendations n not condemnations.
A video should also be shown on d several clean ‘one-room’ blocks in Singapore. An investigative report should be made as to why residents of several one room blocks keep their blocks clean whereas residents of some one room blocks keep it dirty.

ANDREW- Please also see d caption above d pic. In red it reads,”RENTAL FLATS IN SINGAPORE.” What do u reckon it implies? U wud be doing injustice to all residents living in rented flats.

  9. Pay And Pay 4 June 2008

    I think this hilary is only a teen. He/She doesn’t see the bigger picture. Forgive him/her lah… He/She’s just a minor…

  10. hilary 5 June 2008

The bigger pic I see is 2 have a roof over my head n 2 live in a clean n secure enviorment. Also I don’t have to pay n pay as I live within my means with content.

  11. Confused 5 June 2008

    hilary,

    ” As I don’t earn much”

You are far better than most folks as you have a PC and internet acess.

  12. hilary 5 June 2008

What’s d great deal about that? Haven’t u heard of Internet Cafes or for that matter charitable people giving away their old PCs. The cheapest Internet connection, in d market today can be $14 to $18 per mth. Now if u r wondering how I afforded to become Internet Sav vy! There is such a place called ‘The Silver Infocomm Junction.’ At the RSVP Singapore, #08-02 Junction 8 Shopping Centre. This learning hub is free, exclusively for senior citizens. I presume it will take u many years to use this exclusive previlage.I luv 2 learn things anew.
Is there anything wrong for a person who does not earn much, to enjoy these facilities, cheapely through his silver years.
I reckon u should start growing ur head like a GLOBE to get connected 2 d ground. Go Global, child!
