The army would have to be called in if there is a ‘freak election result’. Singaporeans need a ‘good dose of incompetent government’. If we had an alternative in government ‘our women will become maids in other people’s countries’. Singaporeans are ‘complacent’ for allowing an alleged terrorist to escape. Vote in the opposition and you ‘can ruin this place’. ‘There is a conspiracy to do us in’.

Is Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew trying to create fear, or anxiety, among Singaporeans? Does what he says deserve serious consideration? Or is he ‘playing the same old record’?

Without the elected president and if there is a freak result, within two or three years, the army would have to come in and stop it. (Reuters, 16 Sep 06)

You know, the cure for all this talk is really a good dose of incompetent government. You get that alternative and you’ll never put Singapore together again: Humpty Dumpty cannot be put together again…and your asset values will be in peril, your security will be at risk and our women will become maids in other people’s countries, foreign workers. (Justifying pay hikes for Singapore ministers, The Straits Times, 5 April 2007)

Complacency sets in when a people have not suffered any shock or setback for a long time, as in Singapore without jihadist terror attacks, although we have ceaselessly talked about it and prepared out (sic) defence… Most people believe that bad things will happen to others, not to themselves. (Speaking about Mas Selamat Kastari’s escape, April 5, 2008)

ONE freak election result is all it will take to wipe out Singapore‘s success in building up the city state… This could happen if voters became bored and decided to give the ‘vociferous opposition’ a chance – out of ‘light-heartedness, fickleness or sheer madness. In five years, you can ruin this place and it’s very difficult to pick up the pieces… (Straits Times, June 26, 2008)

I think all bets are off because in five years they (opposition) can ruin this place. (AFP, June 27, 2008)

We are not stupid people, they give us all these advice… International Bar Association, human rights, whatever it is. Who are they, what are they? Have you run a country? Have you ever done a community and created jobs for them, gave them a life? We have, and we know what it requires. (CNA, July 11, 2008)

There is a conspiracy to do us in. Why?… They see us as a threat. (Straits Times, July 12, 2008)

So pray tell me. As long as we continue to be subservient to your ideology and rule, you will lead us to the promised land, is that it? You are never wrong, right? All who disagree with you are scums and fools whose only place in this society is jail, right? Other than the ones you chose to be part of your regime, nobody else is competent enough to even express honest opinions ,RIIIIGHT!!!

  2. Kim San 13 July 2008

His comments just show him up for what he really is, a big bully. Only the naive would pay any heed to his threats.

  3. MM Lee has made many questionable remarks before, but with his recent comment that there is a “conspiracy” by the West is to “do [Singapore] in”, he has officially outdone himself in terms of crazy fear-mongering.

This time, his rhetoric is even more brilliant – he appeals to the patriotic and communitarian feelings inherent in most Singaporeans, trying to persuade them that they are under attack by outsiders who are working in concert to bring Singapore down, thereby encouraging Singaporeans to band together and resist the “enemy at the gates” regardless of the merit of the latter’s views. This serves to distract Singaporeans from the substance of the IBA’s criticism but focus their attention on the source.

It is lamentable that MM Lee has chosen to engage in ad hominem attacks instead of addressing the concerns raised by the IBA. He could have attempted to justify the laws curbing the press, the law society and the freedom of expression. If they were truly necessary for Singapore’s prosperity and stability, then surely MM Lee can cite evidence and reasoning demonstrating their necessity.

Yet the examples of most other first world nations have shown us that freedom and prosperity are not mutually exclusive, and the Government – in spite of all its empty rhetoric to the effect – has yet to show us why Singapore is so different that the same cannot apply here.

What is the percentage of Singaporean over 35? Do not forget the young ones too who are brought up in a very different world where information is no longer sealed in the Pandora’s Box.

Gramophone is a good piece of antique to cherish. But if you only have a single limited copy of one of kind phonograph vinyl recordings, if played too often in such equipment, two things could happen. One, the “RECORD” may end up with so much dirt in the groove that the track is stuck and you can no longer play a complete well balance tune. Two, the stylus if broken or wear down because of excessive playing over the years rendering both becomes nothing but an antiquity without much value.

A wide and well read man with enormous amount of talent and intelligence, genius in geo-politics and what not, it just makes me feel sad even just to read about it. I have always held the highest respect for you sir (not those after you though). You have worked too hard, we know, we really do. We thank you very much and its time to move on. I thought I will only quote the preceding famous quotable quotes from Mark Twain (I just love and admire this funny man) to “The Little People” who shivers when you are in sight (just like the Japanese Occupation days). But I have to repeat it here again.

“Don’t tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.”

need to play Elvis to help me sleep…Wise man say, only fools follow..but I can’t get @#%$*!!!!!……@@@@@
    damn!!!..honey, the track is stuck….
Oh my dear…what do you expect? You have been playing the same ole song since the day you got this recording…for god sake..give it a break!

  9. No wonder we’re seen as the Pandora’s Box…opening us will lead to the downfall of Singapore! His ad hominem approach (as opposed to ad rem) is in my opinion really suspect – perhaps he has convinced himself of his system’s perfection, and thus any form of serious challenge must be crushed.

Perhaps that is also why he always prophesises doom and the end of the world…but from how i see it, with all this control, singapore is also going down. So how…?

The journalists were too diplomatic and courteous. They could have told oldfart that he was not running a country but actually running a business, and with no accountabillity. The system he put in place benefitted his family, cronies, eunuchs and army of bootlickers. Bollocks that is what it is.

MM Lee has to rumour-monger so that Singaporeans continue to be brain-washed as soldiers and protector of this piece of oasis that is no more than a safe haven for the familee.

He can’t even go face-to-face properly with a battered-down CSJ, quoting the IBA and then saying they are bullshit… means he WAS rejoicing that IBA apparently endorsed his regime, untill he realise he MADE A MISTAKE and then, NOT WANTING to apologise for a mistake, gather all his machinery to lambast the IBA? What a CRAP!

  13. well, MM Lee is keeping to his messages. It’ll be really freaky if he changes his position everytime he speaks.

For that, I think he earns the credibility.

  15. RH:
    1. I just did a Google News search for “IBA” and found that only AFP and Reuters reported on the IBA attack on LIE KY, his LIEgime, and especially his judiciary. This last, IBA should have utmost credibility since they are far better lawyers than LIE KY and his corrupt judiciary.

    2. Note that the entire American media is SILENT, probably bought with the >US$3 billions LIE KY gives them every 2 years, beginning 2005.

    3. This gives an interesting insight into how the ‘international’ [read American] media works, and their agendas. “conspiracy to do us in”. What a joke, I guess that’s exactly how many of us feel after 42 years of his great leadership.

  17. Black 14 July 2008

In the end, Singaporeans will still get lured, seduced or threatened into voting back into power. thats why they are so mug and confident and even arrogant. There is nothing you can do to stop them from coming back into power in 2011, be it through shifting all sorts of electoral goalpoasts, persecuting the opposition and showcasing them as liars and dishonest through the stories told by 2 – remember Inderjit and his other indian buddy whatshisface, or simply by telling you that if you dont vote them in, your 700K HDB boon keng road flat will be worthless, and the country will be unrvalled in less than 5 yrs yaddayaddayadda….

So…. whats the point of it all? Why bother stay on to fight when your country doesnt want to take care of you now even though you sacrificed in NS and put in your bit for nation building and paid your damm taxed,….it will not take care of you when you grow old and sick. I am very tempted to quit life in this silly place….

I rather pay my taxes to the UK or Australia, at least i know that when I grow old i will have healthcare and even get a pension if I am a good citizen who had paid his dues….it is no different if you tell me I am a second class citizen there,….. because in this elitist and segregated society, there is no REAL difference between the 2 anyway.

  18. Harrison 14 July 2008

    Black,

It’s pathetic of you to simply harbour thoughts of quitting S’pore because of you feeling helpless. Please straighten yourself and make up your mind to join the festering under-current that is building up.

Instead of you quitting, why not strive to make it an ignominous exit for the LEEs. Isn’t it more fruitful rewards than just packing your bags? The future is not yours alone. Think for your children and their generations and you’ll be inspired to take up the necessary cause.

Sorry for my unwarranted opinion though, if you happened to be a PAPmole. :((

  19. Old Harry is starting to sound like his counterpart Mahathir. I’d pay to see this two shoot the shit in a retirement home somewhere.

  20. Yes, why should I leave this country, just because of a few people. The locusts know that once the ants realise that their sheer numbers can outcome them easily, they are done for. As in the movie.

  21. blackfeline 14 July 2008

somebody get him off the stage please!

  22. I think I am more concern abt the new that more FW are serving us in coffee shop then this topic about hw he counter the critics .

Today ST reported. Engineer came here to work in coffee shop where S’porean “siam” these jobs.

The catch is – they earn 10 time more working as a coffee shop assist here than in home town as saleman

So! find me a job as a cleaner elsewhere paying me 10X the pay I earn here (my pay is only 2K a mth) and I will be off to wk. So pl dun keep telling S’porean that we are the “picky” lots

Sorry, I know i have side track the topic.

  23. Harrison 14 July 2008

    John,

You’re buying too much into the PAP-Smear Times’ propaganda. Go to various coffeeshops around the island and chat with the cleaners to find out reality. You will be stunned by the naked truth.

  24. I love Singapore 14 July 2008

“Today ST reported. Engineer came here to work in coffee shop where S’porean “siam” these jobs”

Big deal. Why not also show some of our very very very old singaporean grandpa & grandma working in hawker centres clearing tables.

What are they trying to tell us. That the engineer is not choosy and he is giving our own fellow Singaporeans who are choosy a good fight. Or that there are no good enough jobs around befitting the qualifications of an engineer (FT). Take your pick.

This is not educating us that we should not be choosy. This is insulting our own sense of proportion about the things around here.

  25. I just avoid seeing him in TV or read his news. Looks like PM lee and SM Goh not in charge of this country. Silly old man, just like Mahathir. UMNO does not belong to Mahathir. Last time I respect him because he brought Spore to be a better living place., but after 40 over years, pls retreat and let other people have a say. Spore does not belong to you. My friend asked me to wear black, to protest, but I say, Spore is not pap. Pap won’t rule forever. Remember LKY is not equal to Spore. Leaders may come and go .

  26. Andrew Loh 14 July 2008

If we just dismiss LKY’s words, then we’re missing the bigger picture. LKY only speaks at certain crucial moments. This latest spate of controversial comments is not surprising, actually. I had half-expected him to do so – given the recent rounds of screw-ups by his ministers.

Some call it a diversionary tactic which LKY uses from time to time – the most blatant of which was during GE 2006 where he alone, basically, usurped the entire election to attack James Gomez – and the media went along with him on it.

Also, his remarks are targeted at instilling fear in S’poreans to make them frighten of even thinking of an alternative to the PAP. It’s LKY all over again – 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s.

For me, I am of the view that LKY does not have to be a cabinet member. He is a painful reminder of the hypocrisy of the PAP govt which is always boasting of ‘renewing’ itself.

Here we have someone who’s 85 years old, and is still Minister Mentor (one wonders why our world class ministers need a mentor, anyway), and is in charge of a huge amount of funds in the GIC.

If the govt requires his advice, they can always approach him – even if he’s not in the cabinet. What would stop the govt from doing so? Nothing.

So, why is LKY still in cabinet?

Frankly, he should think about stepping down.

His fear-mongering koyote doesn’t sell very well nowadays.

  27. Conjob 14 July 2008

    Andrew,

LKY will be a despot to the end, he is incorrigible. He has to be in the cabinet, otherwise who will pull the strings for the show to go on?
    Remember Indonesian ” wayang kulit ” ?
The master behind the scene selects the puppets for the show and also decides the direction of the story. The spectators are not suppose to interfere but try to appreciate the show.

Remember the golden rule : “he who has the gold makes the rules.”
Who controls GIC and Temasek ?

I concur that he has been instilling fear on the people from the 60s to 2000s. He is a serial fear mongerer and I will not count him out too soon. Afterall he promised to rise from his grave and haunt us. And his time is not up yet because Goh C T said a man like LKY comes once in a hundred years.

Frankly, we don’t need another LKY for a zillion years.

  28. Harrison 14 July 2008

Well said, LKY. We Singaporeans strongly believe that the greatest threat comes from you. Here’s the sobering fact.

    President – LKY’s buddy
MM (Minister of ministers) – LKY
    GIC – LKY
    Temasek – LKY’s daughter-in-law
    PM – LKY’s son
    DPM – LKY’s brother-in-law

The possiblity of this combination occuring is as good as the number of chances of striking TOTO.

Any doubts that “there is an internal conspiracy to do us in!”

  29. Daniel 14 July 2008

    Freaking oldman,
Stop oppressing the people with FUD. It is Singapore’s misfortunate to have you as father of Singapore. More like a step father than a real father. More like a mafia than a mummy. To think that people still think that you are a great leader of Singapore ? YOu behaving more like a expensive trash ! You haven’t changed a bit all since 1960s. Living in fear and insecurity with paranoid, you make yourself shamelessly rich at expense of citizien. You defy the law of nature with conflict of interest. You live in denial and deceit using the excuse of nation building. Now we know why the world hold you in esteem because you make use of MSM to glorify yourself and your coffers even though in reality, only a few deserved to be called capable and respectable, all the old guards that build Singapore deserve respect but not you, stupid old fool that refused to step down. You made use of MSM to highlight the issues and plight of other countries which is none of our farting business so to make yourself and your coffers look damn good ? Solve your own backyard and stop boardcasting so much other countries’ problems. You make legal corruption and nepotism a culture of Singapore in the government. You make yourself look like a emperor but one without clothes and substances. You live in fear thinking that Gurkha can protect you but not Singaporean. What is there to fear if you do nothing wrong. Don’t overestimate yourself thinking you are immoral. YOu and your coffers orchestrate everything and then blame the people when things goes wrong. You corporate whatever that can make money to create Lee dynasty. You disgrace Singapore by thinking that the same old tactic that can be for subservient Singaporean can be used in other world.

Overall, You are one pathetic dictator with no sense of proportion.
Get real, old man, before Singapore sink into abyss of no return.

  30. I think those who are capable and fed up with the state of affairs here should not migrate. After all this is our country. It is the leaders whom we are fed up with who should be kicked out as far away as possible. This old man has run out his sell by date long time ago. Doesn’t he really care he doesn’t command respect anymore? Or is he too intoxidated by feedbacks from running dogs ?

  31. Daniel 15 July 2008

    Oscar Choy,
then what holding you back ? How do you know we are not doing our part ? YOu mean you can only do it in silence or join political party ? What make you think election is the answer when I only get to vote once in late 1980s in lifetime ? Yes, we wake up but did you ? Why do people feel election is the answer ? I already given up on the election, for one, I no longer get to vote. Secondly, the government continue to buy supporter’s vote promising upgrading to those who vote for them using taxmoney but yet conservative opp party seems helpless against it. Majority of opp party play and live by the rule and end up moving on helplessly ? But still each day is a hope for opp party because the old man’s days are numbered.

So if you have minimal action then at least make your voice known. So why are you even here since you think here is all talk, whinning and commenting ? So what if it is the common people here replying ? Do you have a problem with that ?

“you are not intelligent and creative enough to talk of something new and have strong agendas to embark, brave and emerge to stand up and tall and say “I will stand for the general election come next 2 years and urge all readers to vote for me”. ”
Maybe you want to be more specific ? Who ? How about you ? I vote for you if t I ever get to vote, but make sure you stand for election first since you are so confident. NOw tell us what you have done so that we can learn from you and so deserve a vote.

Please tell others to know their capability and objective before thinking of standing for election. Don’t be a fool to standup for election just for the sake of election. I have to admit I don’t have that goal to stand up for election and I don’t think I want to since I having my own life goal. I rather be follower and work behind the scene telling the people what happened. That’s me and it’s my choice and so is some of the people’s choice here. Is standing up for election the only way to show support ?

The government leeway of manipulating of law, system and election might first broken if just just election are to be successful.

Whinning is better than to have a dead forum that make one think that Singaporean is apathetic. Make your anger known here rather than just suffer in silence if one is playing limited role. Other will feel your anger and feel it themselves. Emotion will fuel your anguish. If you are apathetic in even participating in forum thinking that all here is talk then nothing will work, and that is where one really have to ‘go home and sleep !’ Every voice here count and even yours too.

And you don’t need to be a politician to talk politics so one doesn’t need to stand up for election to show support. If he has the commitment and goal to stand up for election, by all means, go for it.

  32. The PAP’s government depends heavily on to guns to hold the fort. When these top guns screwed up (as some did recently), they do not have to pay any penalty. In economics, we call this a moral hazard problem. Big banks are not allowed to fail, they will always be bailed out. Ditto for big ministers.

This is a very dangerous structural problem in Singapore politics today. It is a ticking time bomb. In fact, the recent death of Ong Chit Chung serves as a timely reminder of the danger of the GRC system which the PAP puts in place to prevent by-election should someone passes away. The problem is that they believe that the ministers who helm the GRC team together will live forever. What happens if he/she dies in office? Then you have three to four weak MPs who are not of ministerial calibre.

The coming collapse of Singapore will not be the undoing of any opposition parties (it is doubtful that they can win anything than a handful of seats). It will be the result of the PAP legacy to try to control the electoral process to such a successful extent that it wipes up totally the dynamics the churn up good political leaders. In economics, we call that the adverse selection problem. In the end, only those who are rent-seeking in any ways will want to serve as MPs or ministers.

So, MM Lee, why you go on about complacency, don’t be too complacent yourself. You think you know everything, control everything, but sooner or later, you will the victim of your very successes.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit… (quote from Desiderata)

There are other more important matters in life than listening to his repeated ramblings. When he speaks, he needs an audience. So, I elect not to be a part of this audience. I suppose when one grows older, one tends to speak louder as our hearing diminish. One can also choose to age gracefully.

I will wait patiently for the next GE.

  34. xtran,
Don’t be bother about the next GE. There is more than 50% chance you wouldn’t get to vote. the old man has destroyed any resemblance of a true and fair democratic system here. It is more helpful if we were to wait for him to pass on.

  38. Daniel 16 July 2008

According to LKY, not only the Amercians out to screw us but the Russian and chinese foreigners who are here as well.

“The groups have seen that Russians and Chinese have been coming and studying Singapore’s success story, Lee said. The leaders of these countries ask, “How does this little country with so little talent keep its ruling party in place and run a tight ship, honest, and effective, and make progress?”
They are “picking up points here and there,” Lee said.”

    T, here’s the whole Desiderata:

Go placidly amid the noise and haste
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others,
even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    Keep interested in your career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is.
Many persons strive for high ideals
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
    Be yourself.
    Especially do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disappointment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars.
You have a right to be here.
And whether it is clear to you or not,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive him to be,
and whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life,
    keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham and drudgery and broken dreams
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I believe there is a God and the old man will face his Maker eventually.

  43. Why no western nations come to learn our crappy system? Only Communists state (Vietnam, North Korea and China) and former communist (Russia) and countries with little or no democracy (Burma, Cambodia and Iran) and monarchy nation like Saudi Arabia, UAE so on…. Come on, MM? Give me a respectable nation with a better than us democracy who are interested to learn from us. Stop comparing gold with copper they are not the same. why not compare your salary to China ‘s great leaders they earned peanuts versus your extraordinary pay packets.

When Law is Lee and Lee is in the LAw, we are all screwed.

  44. Pak.Gila 18 July 2008

guote: “4) Komnenos on July 13th, 2008 1.28 pm He is just getting old. When people are old, they tend to ramble on and on”

He was not called “SM” (Senile Minister) for nothing. Poor old man simply does not know how to get a life to really retire and enjoy life like Jiang Zemin . (although it was commonly believed that he was needed in the arena to protect the throne of his dear son ).

He seems to have the mind-set of a Chinese emperor (Chinese emperors own china, just like he owns Singapore therefore can pass on to his offsprings forever ) — naming his dear son “dragon” probably a best hint.

  45. Fear mongering coupled with threat inflation, hoping to convince SinKaporean that PAP is the only party that is capable of ruling Sinkapore and no other political party could be trusted to do so. This is old stuff and we had grown wise over the years to listen and believe such rubbish. However, we must not underestimate the old fox and must continue to spread the word around until the GE is over. It is better to be sure then take a chance. If the opposition is voted into power, I believed it will the best present for him for his retirement- a excellence sending off present from the people of Sinkapore. It will be a fixing way to send him off into retirement for good otherwise he will continue to believe he is indispensable. Let will give us a change to see how many of the million dollars minister is empolyable outside the PAP. It will be nice to have a change of political scenery.
