To hold a by-election would be a waste of public funds and will be an invitation to political mercenaries to appear from the cold. They will promise the naive and the gullible the moon and the stars.

celebrating ND is a waste of public fund. Printing flyers to explain the GST rebate, workfare bonus, is a waste of public fund. What else …increasing ministerial salaries so sky high, is a waste of public fund….who can contribute any more ideas ?

Anything that is not pro-government or its perpetuation appears to be a waste of public funds.
Like the Tourism board wasting millions of dollar on feasibility study on the Capitol Building and nothing comes out of it, but no one bats an eyelid.
Like Temasek Holdings pumping billions of dollar into Merrill Lynch, a bank that will collapse anytime. Why save the US people when the local people are suffering from inflation?
Like the large amount of money to lure tourist with casino, car racing, etc to come to this super boring island. You can see contruction everywhere, road digging, new concrete …. building contractors are putting million tons of concrete on this island ( smiling behind with $$$ ). Meanwhile, noise pollution is getting worse, the public transport is under strain, and the government put in more gantry to test the limits of Singaporeans.
So, Mr Lionel, who is the naive and gullible? The PAP promises stars and the moon, but all we get are shits.
tunkudon
they dun even have the gut to have election talk waste of funds hahaahaha they know best
Observer (SG-HK)
What is the amount compared to those lost investments? That is really a waste of public funds. Where’s the accountability?
GS
If holding a by-election is a waste of public funds, would that suggest being a citizen is a waste of time since we cannot even exercise that basic right?
Joe
So, Mr Lionel De Souza, are you saying democracy is a waste of money? Time and time again, the government uses external mouthpieces to promote their crappy thoughts.
When is wasting money a big concern for the government. There are so many cases of money spent with no result or come back to its original state. Remember Marina Bay was renamed to “Marina Bay” after large amount of money was spent. That’s wasting money.
Whatever Mr. Lionel De Souza is smoking. I want some please.

Lionel De Souza, mercenaries indeed !
We already have 82 political mercenaries in our parliament. LOL
Don’t you think they are damn expensive to hire. ? Waste of public funds, right ?
The so call top mercenaries are the highest paid in the world and we have lost control on their remuneration……do you feel comfortable with this situation ?
You talk about some mercenaries coming from the cold …….promising the moon and the stars……..what about the present mercenaries sitting pretty ?
Similar to what one netizen said, we pay top dollars for top mercenaries to lose top dollars. Even bigger waste of public funds, right ?
Do you recall the present mercenaries telling us that our women folks will end up as maids if we don’t pay them well or we will all be ruined in 5 years if another group of mercenaries took over ? Someone who thinks like you actually said it could be 1 year instead of 5 years.
If we hold a referendum now Lionel, I believe most of the folks will want a by-election to get rid of some mercenaries. LOL

Sadly, he’s also guilty of being the same people he is cautioning against.
Does he decide what is the truth? What makes him think that his narrative is the sole holy one?

Lionel De Souza,
how much the government pay you to write such article ? Is Lucky Tan your mentor ? If so, Lucky Tan has really taught you well how to write satire. The pattern and style of those quote look so similarly to our ministers. Are you a scholar and will you mind showing us your patriotic face on facebook ?
Should not blame you. I know what ST Forum stands for. It is SaTire forum.

“They will promise the naive and the gullible the moon and the stars.”
Lionel De Souza, if a monkey will to promise the moon and the stars, contest in the by-election, I will vote for him, afterall PAP also promise moons and stars and never fulfil them, so what’s the difference!
Remember the ‘Swiss standard of living’ or ‘more good years’ promises?
In any case, if the monkey will to get voted into parliament, he could only do more damage to himself rather than Singapore, if he only knows how to talk rubbish, eat bananas or jumping up and down of chairs for a period of 3 years at most till 2011, year of next general election.
Don’t tell me that 81highly talented (self praise) PAP MPs are incapable of handling a monkey + LTK and CST in the parliament?
Please lah….. come 2011, I may still be a naive person but I’m sure am not a fool, if the monkey could only performed as stated above without contributing much benefits to the residents of Bukit Batok or Singaporeans in general, by then I would vote him out of the next election!
In the meantime, the way I look at things now, the monkeys are presently our MIWs aka PAP as they daren’t call for a by-election.
So, who are the honourable man or monkey?
Even a little woman like CSC, the PAP are scared to sh*t to let her out of the country to attend a democracy forum in Stanford University……. hahaha…… so who are scare of who, so don’t talk big like a brave lion, PAP!
In my eyes, you all PAP MPs are kittens only….. meow….. meow…..

I agree with Lionel. For exactly the same reasons he gave we should scrap the general election altogether so as to conserve public funds and prevent politcal mercenaries from destroying Singapore. Then we Singaporeans will forever live blissfully in tranquility to serve the immutable Dear Leader like in North Korea.

i’m surprised. if by-election is a waste of fund, at least the results are clear. How does spending $400,000 renaming Marina Bay as Marina Bay sound to you.
Wizard
Mercenaries? for goodness sake. We have a bunch of sewer rats eating away our money through salary and pension and you are talking out waste of public funds. Very soon we are going to run out of titles for Ministers..

Do you Support 1 Party State ?
Now only WP and Chiam in parl.
Chiam ward probably may loose.
WP – goh sounds confident.
Take these 2 out of the picture, 1st world proud sg left with 1 PARTY state ?
unique.
save money no need fixing.

Even if we have a one-party system we’ll never end up like North Korea because our Great Leader and Dear Leader are paid millions and therefore it can be concluded that they’re better.
Must be nice, having blind unthinking faith like Lionel De Souza.

Thanks for the timely advice about people who promise moon and stars just to get voted. promises like ’swiss standard of living’.

1 Party State is possible :
In a Democracy, an Election is held every few years.
Votes come from the people and that decides what party gets voted in.
If Majority are like our dear friend Souza, that is a strong possibility.
So, technically speaking, 1 party state is a possibility in a democracy.
Correct me if I am wrong.
Every year nowsadays, 1000 gave up their passport and citizenship and collected all their CPF and bought homes elsewhere.
What kind of votes these could cast?
Consider the CLC system also….
Consider influx.
Consider internet ip address and net neutrality, if any.
Maybe TOC owner become millionaire like HWZ? ha ha ha …. just kidding lah TOC, don’t flame me hor.
When sg becomes 1 party state, can I say it would have created another world record for 1st world democratic country?
Its really up to the people now. I wonder why 1000 give up their citizenship every year nowadays?
Harrison
Lionel,
Does it not apply to PAP’s candidates that they can classified as mercenaries too, if a by-election is called? Mercenaries or not, it’s Singaporeans’ choice. We are not in the 60/70/80s anymore.
Singapore produces a very high percentage of highly educated people. It is pure nonsensical to doubt Singaporeans’ maturity and choice of governance. Your articulation was a loud and undue fart.
Observer (SG-HK)
Dear Saturday_Slippers,
“I wonder why 1000 give up their citizenship every year nowadays?”
The writings are on the wall. It may not be the same reason for the entire 1,000 yearly who choose to leave for good. If you have worked in other places and taken a liking with the place where the values you are after does not exist and will not exist in your home country; for the sake of your personal future and generations to come, once the opportunity is there for your to choose, it is not diffcult to make that decision albeit it may not be an easy transition but it is worth the while.
I have many of my friends who had left for the reasons that the values they are after; values such as true freedom of expression, freedom of speech, openness, not immense in paper and money chasing…etc. Ya, some had said they are surviving, others do face discrimination but all said its worth the while and had never regreted it.
It is not hard to fathom or too wild to make that assumption if you get these people to vote, the results of the majority is likely to tip towards any party contestant other than PAP.
This does not mean that we who choose to stay behind will vote only for the ruling party. I believe most will vote for a party that really cares about its people, I mean all its people, not just a small segment of it. We will vote for those who are genuinely wanting to serve the country for betterment not because of the monetary reward and do not run the country like a big corporate.

Dear De Souza,
One party state is a very dangerous system. The mecenaries, may tend to be greedy, and corruption may set in, even you pay them millions of dollars, they will still say “money no enough part 2″. Since in a one party state, all are “ka ki lung”, there is no check and balance, Spore may end up like Indonesia and Malaysia where corruption is rampant .

“NAIVE AND GULLIBLE”. Hmmph, let me digest it for awhile.
Okay! If there is a by-election in my constituency now and the opposition put up an orang utang as their candidate, I’ll vote for the orang utang. How’s that for naive and gullible. Life’s been good for you Lionel hasn’t it , ever since you redeemed your honor through the courts? Good for you.
