Open debate

To be able to speak to so many lawyers without you being able to respond. You can see what a few weeks in Government has done to my approach to open debate.
Law Minister K Shanmugam, on why he accepted invitation to speak at NUS law graduates’ convocation (Straits Times, July 16, H8)

It has always been PAP’s manifesto.
“When the government speaks, Singaporeans are only expected to listen and follow. No need to ask questions because we (PAP) know what to do and we believe in ourselves only. When we tell you, it’s out of necessity and not to have your opinions. Your opinions will cause unnecessary stress and problems for us.
ST is our form of transparency. It reports according to what and how we said, nothing less and nothing more. However, there is an unwritten rule that journalists should know the source of their drinking water.”

Open debate ??? LOL
The Law Minister should take the opportunity to address his audience with some insightful comments on the IBA report . Does he think it is objective ? If he does not , then he should suggest an open debate with the representatives of IBA . Convince the IBA and worldwide audience that the Singapore judiciary can stand up to any scrutiny. Those NUS law graduates will take inspiration from their Law Minister.
This is what it takes if you truly want the judiciary to be worldclass.
You need to earn the unconditional respect from the best legal minds around the world.

“The Online Citizen will now rebut Mr Shanmugam’s joke…”
The first point about Mr Shanmu…. is he good enough? If he can convince IBA that Singapore is not really as bad as they painted, i will call him “Lao Pei”. The problem is he isn’t that talented not to mentioned handpicked by PAP. Only good with following orders and bend when needed by itchy old fart. So much so for a law minister who have guts to speak in a less than meaningful debate to a bunch of newbies. What kind of joker is he? Try challenge IBA for a world wide conference to debate Singapore is not as shitty as they think. Tough luck lah. He will just hope IBA “move on to some rogue state asap, come again next year” and then he can broadcast to all sinkies how good he is. Law has been misused to protect the regime of Lees, Law is Lee and Lee is in the Law. I say f*** the law. Understand?

Harrison,
Even better (and more often than not), when the ST and MSM report in favorable slant towards the PAP, it’s ok..but when they slant twds the Opposition or the dissidents, the PAP smacks them for engaging in political comments and leading opinion!

Kingfisher,
Thereafter, those brave journalists who criticised PAP will suddenly fade into oblivion. However, the chances of this happening is less than zero because all reports must be vetted by the editor first.
To arrest this intellectual cancer, the malignant tumours must be removed first followed by therapy and rehabilitation.

For me, it’s more interesting to discover that he was a science student who switched to law because he didn’t want to spend “hours and hours doing laboratory work and even Saturday classes”, whereas law school had “all but 14 hours of lectures a week” and “sounded much better”.
