PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PERMATANG PAUH,
MALAYSIA, 26 AUGUST 2008

We won! And our victory is decisive and overwhelming.

I share in the joy felt by all Malaysians on this historic day. This is a victory for the people. And it’s great to be back!

On March 8th Malaysians voted for a New Dawn. Today, on the eve of our independence day, we have reasserted that call. We celebrate our nation’s independence in the spirit that our founding fathers intended – a nation of one and a people united.

In the face of the greatest adversity, our campaign focused on the issues that matter to Malaysians. Our calls for national unity, good governance and a vibrant democracy have silenced the voices of racist chanting, those who profit from the abuse of power and exploit the politics of fear and deceit.

We have promised a New Dawn for Malaysia and we will deliver on our promise. We will forge ahead on our Malaysian Economic Agenda to revive the economy, and to uplift the poor and the marginalized of all races. We will restore the integrity of the judiciary, fight corruption and build a truly unified nation.

We will be a government that is totally committed to realizing the people’s aspirations.

With the success of the eight of March and tonight’s resounding victory, I daresay we are indeed ready to face the challenges of the future, together.

We could not have won without the firm, unwavering support of our friends in the Pakatan Rakyat and the tens of thousands of Malaysians – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadhazans – who have come to Permatang Pauh to work hard for this victory. I truly appreciate your courage, conviction and valour; and congratulate your commitment to our shared principles of freedom, justice and democracy.

This may be one small step for Permatang Pauh but one giant leap for the people of Malaysia.

  1. Well, the campaign speech by Anwar Ibrahim ended with Elvis Presley’s “Its Now Or Never.”

Without a doubt, Anwar will win, and win big. But whether he will be allowed to take office is another question.

But knowing UMNO’s dirty tricks and underhand tactics, I am willing to bet that Anwar will end up either in “Heartbreak Hotel”, or doing his “Jailhouse Rock” soon.

    “There Goes My Everything”…

It maybe too early to celebrate. Desperate people will do desperate things. Let’s see how UMNO will try their best to prevent Anwar from entering parliament.

I read the results with gladness. Although I am not a Malaysian, I have been following the reports and developments through the papers and internet and have never believed that Anwar sodomised anyone. The election results in Permatang Pauh only goes to show that very few people believed those malicious and nonsensical charges leveled by Anwar’s opponents to discredit him.

Time for a change in Malaysia leadership. The people have said it ‘Reformasi’ and they are fedup being uder the rule of an extremely corrupt government. Do not know whether Anwar is the answer, but at least there is a hope and the dream is still alive.

  4. All hail YBDSAI!!

  5. congrats to the voters at permatang puah and the malaysian people in general for their nerve to do the right thing and for standing up to be counted.
i like to see more happening in our country and not be led by the nose! especially that a by-election is not required when an mp drops dead or quits! rubbish! the party is running scared………….

    Dear Anwar,

Though am not a Malaysian, I have been following up on your history since your deflamation uder Mahathir ruling.

Everyone knew you are innocent and even Mahathir has admitted that it’s a a fix-up on you. Reme, ber what he said in the press? “The Government is not STUPID to use back the same tactics bla bla bla”.

    It’s pay-back time!

All I hope to see to is Singapore will also make a change.

  7. If you ever wonder why the Malays voted for Anwar, or rather the opposition, despite many of them being members of UMNO, just go to the teh tarik stalls in Malaysia and talk to the ordinary people.

They are fed up of the corruption, cronyism and the blatant rise of people with connections ( or termed as people with `thick cables’ ).

It is NOT Anwar whom they actually favoured, but he represented an opportunity to hurt the ruling BN leaders, they way they themselves felt hurt by the inflation, and to an extent, arrogance of the leaders.

Actually, the same happened here in Singapore at one time. I can still remember how an ex-mental patient-candidate who did not even campaign, won a credible number of votes against Prof. Jayakumar! It was scary for the PAP then, and I hope that lesson will always be remembered by the crop of new leaders.

  8. Congrats to Mr Anwar
who fight over the dirty politics of BN.

Its time that BN wake up and stop all these arrogance and do more to care for their people.

  9. 123

Actually Anwar is himself an exponent of dirty politics. As recent as the Malaysian general elections, he called Naji…………Najib Mongolia, to the thunderous applause of his supporters.

Is there anything clean in politics?

  10. berak bagus 30 August 2008

nobody can beat the PAP of Singapore playing dirty. Chia Thye Poh was kept in detention for 32 years by the PAP. Dirty is an understatement ! inhuman is more appropriate ! Nelson Mandela should honour Chia by sharing the stage with him at some world forum. LKY can do the honourable thing and kiss both men’s feet.
