What you have seen is not abnormal or out of "Money not enough movie". Since the days of the Asia Financial crisis, many poor people were forced to do extra jobs, pick up other people rubbish and try to salvage as much as possible whter usable or anything can be sold for monies.
My friend told me that they had no money to buy new furniture and they pick up good quality furniture from the dumping area in HDB or private estate to reuse at home. I remenber that when my son's project in school was recycling we actually went round to pick up drink cans from the roadside. We realised that we were not alone, we have many "competitors" Till today, we have never throw away a single can or waste paper. Everything was recycled. There are sad to say many poor people in Singapore who are in need.
