How’s the economy doing? Watch PM’s shirt colour.

In TOC Extra • 2,645 views • 8 Comments

Anyone noticed the grey shirt that Prime Minister Lee wore at his National Day Rally? Last year he wore pink. Last night, he wore grey.

Could it be because of the state of the economy? When the economy was doing well – “a golden era”, as MM Lee called it – the PM wore pink, and in more than one occasion in the past year or so. Now that the economy is not doing so well, he wears a more erm, appropriate colour.

Perhaps the thinking behind it is that it is no good to look too cheery or cheerful when Singaporeans are experiencing the highest inflation in 26 years. Alos, the stage is more bare now – without the potted plants.

A subtle message that the PM empathises with the general feeling of the people?

The National Day Rally is a high profile event viewed by many people.

The entire event is planned by many professional people and the set looks fantastic. Potted plants are not the only way dress the backdrop as you can see that this year the emphasis was on the lighting effects.

As a professionally planned event, Mr. Lee was definitely informed of the fact that there will be different colour lights being played behind him and it is only natural for someone who have that kind of fact to dress in a more solid colour so not to blend into the backdrop.

We all read in the papers and internet about how bad the current situation is locally and around the whole world. It is more important that we try to impart constructive and accurate views than to stir unrest with unfounded facts.

Good of the writer to notice this. Anyway, I do notice that the grey shirt goes very well with the state of the global economy…Maybe PM is trying to show empathy with everyone on the street?

Not so sure why he’s wearing grey although you may be right he’s in that because of the current economy! (Or may be it’s just what was ironed and avail! >,< ) At least it shows he is not someone uncaring or with a wierd fashion sense although, he could have worn any colour or anything he wanted.

I noticed too….taht he spoke at a slightly faster pace than SPM but I am glad he could inject some cheer in this gloom (shows in his speech). You cannot raise above the gloom by staying depressed.

So many observations we have ar? keke

The last time he wore pink, there was talk that he might be “sympathizing” with the GBLT community, now everyone is speculating why he’s donning grey. I love symbolism, but this, I’m afraid, is much ado about nothing.

I agree with with you, William.Destructive criticisms are never useful. What matters more are constructive comments, criticisms, on how to improve the situation we are facing.

” It is more important that we try to impart constructive and accurate views than to stir unrest with unfounded facts.”

Constructive ? Unfounded facts ?

Until the leaders can be more constructive and truthful, don’t expect the same treatment of citizen to the leader. The concern citizen can only speculate if the leader continue to act in shroud of secrecy and mystery. If the leaders can’t earn the respect and trust of the citizen, they have to change and look at themselves at mirrors first.

For example, You believe that ERP doesn’t generate profit and great source of revenue for government ? Call a spade a spade, and don’t treat citizen as a fool. One can fool a citizen once but not all the time.

By not been truthful to using statistic and using half-truth statistic that doesn’t even stand scrutiny, how do the leader expect the people to propose constructively ?

Are you been convince that generally wages should not be rise to counter inflation but that wages of ministers should be rise instead ?

Do the leader really understand the needs of the people, and if they really and sincerely do, what is it that their policies fail miserably eg producing baby, grooming local sport talent ? The internet has produced more solution through comment and post than the MSM.

As how the leaders haven’t been constructive and giving the correct fact and information, just do your own research in onlinecitizen.com

Respect from the citizen has to been earn and not to buy through carrot and law.

A case of over-analysis? Whether it was intended, planned, or PM was just having a ‘bad-shirt’ day, perhaps we should focus on the more pertinent issues? These sorts of (mundane/inconsequential) issues are best left to xiaxue et al…
