The people have spoken
In Quotes • 86 views • 3 Comments
Sir, we are here today debating the nature of democracy in Singapore. Democracy is about the people, about how they have the power. And the people have spoken. They have spoken, their voice rings loud and clear, and they want a by-election.

There must be good reasons for the outcome.
The world is watching Singapore since the announcement that Speaker’s Corner will be given a new lease of life for demonstrations!
The economy is getting into a bumpy road ahead, and social factors are not getting any favourable despite the many stop gap measures. Think for a moment if the constitution is played out for a by election – the outcome can go either way in the present circumstances. Depending on the outcome, shock waves, although of different scale might start like what is happening across the crossway ; the consequences of the impacts may be unpredictable to undoing. A point may be scored for democracy but is it really worth it at this JUNCTURE?
It may be better to wait for 2010 all things considered; even the PAP may not mind losing a few more seats then.
Safety sake and damage control over the last few days are undoubtedly seen in action – even if the shit hit the fan as in the LBW saga or the out of point debate in Parliament as to who can call for the by election; whatever means to move on.
It may be okay after all when emotions are tamed and common sense prevails; think about it guys.

Is the transcript and youtube video for Ms Sylvia Lim, Mr Low Thia Khiang, Dr Thio Li-ann etc on this issue available?

What was the purpose of a GRC when it was first mooted? It was to ensure that a minority candidate would be elected into the parliament. Therefore if the minority seat were to be vacated, it is evenmore so that a by-election be called.
If those MP feels that they can do the job of a seat vacated by the ex-MP, then the PM should look into whether there is a need to have so many MPs in the first place. It is a waste of tax-payers monies to be feeding these excess.
