It pains my heart to hear about this.

He was a great man, a person of integrity and steel. He didn’t give up when the tables were turned against him. He relentlessly fought for the rights of Singaporeans even though majority of us do not appreciate it.

He is a son of liberty and a true Singapore Hero.

I do hope that he’ll be remembered in our history books as such and not have a different picture painted of this great man, like many other past Singaporean heroes.

Rest in peace Sir.

No matter what one thinks of JBJ, one thing is always clear: He has never seek self-glory. It is always about the people. As he said recently: “The strength is in the ordinary people.”

The greatest tribute one can give him is that he lived his life as such – an ordinary person – but one who rose above others in that ordinariness.

Earlier in his life, he had opportunities to rise high (as a magistrate and later would have been a high court judge), but he gave it all up when he found the system was unfair.

In the toxic environment of Singapore politics, JBJ never feared.

We will not forget you – nor the things you have done for Singapore.

Rest well, JBJ. You have fought the good fight.

I feel sad, really sad. I was looking forward to his performance in his new reform party.

His fighting spirit and never say die attitude belies his age and I thought he will be with us for many more years. How I wish I had gone up to him at centrepoint to shake his hand when I had the chance to do so.

My deepest condolences to the family of JBJ. He was a true Singapore patriot, representative of the people and one of the foundation pillars of Singapore politics.

Few can match his compassion for the average citizen on the street and there will be many, myself included, who still appreciates his sincerity in trying to improve the lives of Singaporeans.

He will be deeply missed esp by the ordinary Singaporeans whom he championed.

Just when he rose up from political injury and challenged the hegemony once more… While I may not agree with some of his words and actions, I think we have here a man who has changed the Singapore political significantly, reviving what was a dead opposition for decades.

My condolences to his family and friends. May his dreams of a more democratic government come true; and may the Reform Party live up to his ideals.

With the passing of JBJ, it also marks the end of any significant figure in our society that represents the poor and underrepresented. David Marshall, JBJ fought for the rights of the poor even if they have nothing to offer them in return.

Sep 30, 2008 10:58

I met JBJ at Anson by-election. His passion and fighting spirit won my respect. His EQ, in facing all the lawsuits, un-fair treatment and allegations was clearly demonstrated.

He is not irrelevant. It is the political machines, the public media (you who which I meant) and those who take advantage of the situations who claimed he is ‘past due’.

I read on the website of him founding another political party with great admiration. Such is the man who challenges us to keep on going even in the midst of strong opposition (from you know who).

JBJ, my saluation to you, your family who supported you during these decades and most of yourself, you leave a legacy to me.

Allow me to take my hat off to a great politician. He deserves all the accolades that go his way.

In his heyday, none of our current crop of government leaders is a fraction of a worthy match for his reverberating convictions. He has more principles and focus than the entire 82 PAP Members of Parliament combined, including one octogenarian who will not have the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jeyaretnam crawl on his bended knees to ask for mercy.

Mr. Jeyaretnam’s had shown iron-grit determination and courage even at the nadir of his existence. This great man did not need mercy, and will not ask for one. The never-say-die spirit he embodied will live on amongst the courageous. It is a gift which all Singaporeans, especially the members of the Opposition, should emulate in their long and laborious quest towards winning a lasting and substantial change for this country.

The esteemed gentleman is a legend, and his moral legacy will outlast that of undeserved pretenders. I pay my earnest respect to one of Singapore’s last true hero.

J B Jeyaretnam was a man who besides his setbacks, truly believed in the everyday Singaporean. His rallying call was often that “power does not belong to the government. It belongs to the people. They delegate it to the government.” He identified himself with the common Singaporean through the slogan “We the People”. Now, the thought lingers in my mind, “was this true son of the people of Singapore, betrayed by the very people he loved so much?”

Your courage cannot be matched.

Your belief & determination to speaking up for the people put the 80-odd parliamentarians to shame.

Your departure means the newer generations will never get to see that we have a real life fighter for democracy & human rights.

Mr JBJ does not speak a word of Hokkien or Mandarin (By the way, myself and my family are all Chinese educated.)… He speaks only English.

Through his sincereity, his perseverence.. he managed to reach out and touched the hearts of all Singaporeans…. Many Ah Pek and Ah Mmmm, who speaks only dialect, also know that this is a fearless and honourable man….

Sep 30, 2008 14:27

Years ago, when my son was a little we ran into JBJ outside Centrepoint during the festive season. My son asked me if JBJ was Santa given his white beard. I replied yes, for this man had given so much for the people without expecting anything in return.

He had given almost everything except his pride and honour which no amount of lawsuit could take away. On that day, I had a hard time explaining to my son why a ex-judge and lawyer was peddling his book at the street corner. He took away on that day a personally authographed book which he cherishes.

Later as he grew he understood and was able to make up his own mind about leadership and leaders. He understood that absolute power corrupts. He understood how much this man had to endure to fight for the rights of the common man. He understood that once you surrender your rights it is not going to reclaim it.
Today, it was my son, a young man now , who broke the news to me with tears in his eyes. JBJ was his father’s hero and his as well.

There have been calls to name a road after him. I share that call.

Someone should organise a formal petition to have a road in Singapore named after him.

It would be a suitable memorial and a deserving tribute to remind us that a great man once walked the same streets as the rest of us. He might have walked that path alone at times but even in those times, he was never alone as the people were always in his heart. For that alone, I am grateful.

JBJ in his heyday, breathed fire and had more passion about Singapore’s welfare than any of the current 82 parliamentarians that are currently in Singapore’s political scene. Even at 82, Jeyaretnam did not fade into oblivion. He continued to sell books at Centrepoint to firstly finance his bankruptcy and promote his ideals. He is a man of true courage, choosing to continue on despite his wife’s death in 1980.

Never again will Singapore see such a brave politician who will always put Singapore before himself. A fighter till the very end. He was unfortunately called home by the Lord this morning. JBJ,

God may have taken you away and that your works are just and upright. The son of Singapore worthy of honor and praise, his unselfish acts are legacy for the young and upstart opposition to learn. Even if you are away, your fighting spirit will imprint on us and that nothing will be gained without a struggle. The fight for the betterment of Singaporeans will continued and when you are in heaven bless all of us to take this freedom fight to the next level. Your old adversary may be lingering around, but GOD is likely to call them too in the coming years. The wait is not too long. Hope for the future!

God bless JBJ, Hero and Son of Singapore, and his family in their hour of need.

I salute a patriotic and great Singaporean. He fought bravely and with convictions. He soldiered on despite incredible and unjust obstacles thrown in his path by those in power. He has paid a heavy price fighting for Singaporeans. In death many Singaporeans will cherish and remember him. May he rest in peace and get his justice.

I admire such a man who stood and suffer the consequences of his belief.
Many would have given up and retired but not him.For he believed in helping the less fortunate and less spoken ones. What he did is not for self gratification but for others.
I might not agree to all he did or his ideas but I wished I had a little of his never say die spirit. God will bless him and his family

A TRUE BLUE SINGAPOREAN THAT DO NOT MIGRATE WHEN ALL ODDS ARE AGAINST HIM..HE STAYED ON TO FIGHT FOR HIS FELLOW MAN.A CHARACTER TO EMULATE.

LKY set up the GRC system because of the BS that we vote along racial lines. Well, Mr Jeyaretnam is the example to disprove this for he won in
a Chinese majority constituency against the govt Chinese candidates TWICE . For they all see in him a non-quiter, a determined upright man fearlessly facing a bully in the form of the PAP govt. He could well live comfortably in his previous positions but chose to fight for what he believed in and as a result became a broken man afew times financially but not spiritually.
How many us could measure to the stature of this man?

Long live democracy
Oct 1, 2008 0:00

I will never forget what he said many years ago in one of the rallies – “Now, get that straight in your head”. The man with the biggest and strongest heart has died of heart failure – how ironic life can be. But he went as a hero, discharged from Bankruptcy and revived his political career, contented being the father of 2 loving sons. Who at 82 years old had the spirit to continue fighting for his beliefs and ordinary folks. He had the opportunity to live his life with a silver spoon but gave it all up to pursue justice and humanity. I was at his wake just now – heavy rain so not many people. But the place is well sheltered, ventilated and spacious. Many seats available as well as a memorial hall. The family is expecting a big crowd – so do turn up and pay respects to Singapore’s beacon of democracy. Vivian Balakrishnan turned up around 10.45pm alone and dressed ordinarily.

My condolence to the family of the late JBJ.
JBJ will not be forgotten. He shall be remembered.
I used to see this humble gentleman lawyer standing at the entrance of Raffles City near the escalator to City Hall MRT. Most of us knew what sufferings he had to go through politically and the many legal suits to bankrupt him. Though he may have lost many times in the courts (except that one time with the Privy Council), he won the hearts of many Singaporeans. It’s a sad day for Singapore but I hope his passing will spur other outstanding Singaporeans to take up his baton. We need fearless men like him to Stand Up for Singapore.
LONG LIVE THE MEMORY OF JBJ !!!

I will always cherish the memory of walking to him and offered to buy the book from him. We shook hands and started to chat a bit. I remembered his hand was very warm. And there was something special about him and my senses could tell me that he was a very warm and friendly person. There was humour in the way he spoke and his smile was gentle and kind. We parted after that. That was about 3 years ago. May he rest in peace.

May God bless him and his entire family, and may his new Party live up to his dreams and expectations of it.

Thanks for the sacrifices you have made that till the end and yet unable to realise what you longed for ur ‘better’ SG. Regardless of who you have offended, i think you’ve done great. Its indeed a gloomy day for SG to lost one of its outspoken n ‘rebellious’ politicians :-(

A true martyr. He emptied his pockets and was made to look like a little man standing on a side walk hawking a book. But the greatness of a man is not measured by the wealth in his pocket or the occupation he has. It is measured by the sacrifices he made in emptying his pockets, allowing himself to be seen as a little man standing on a side walk hawking a book, only for his belief that he was fighting for a cause that would be of benefit to a group of strangers, we commonly call Singaporeans. That to me truly makes him a Giant.

When I heard the sad news…..my heart dropped. Then the heartache began…..

Why do the good men always get taken away first? I asked myself…..unsubsciously directing my question at the heavens….WHY?

JBJ is a legend. Our very own Singapore hero. No other comes close. He gave us his best years, his best intentions, his best effort….his all. What a fearless, courageous and honourable man he was. He feared no one, because he knew very well his convictions were just! He could’ve had a cushy life, not wanting of anything. But his sense of righteousness and the desire to see justice took him on another path. A very dangerous path which eventually led to his ruin. But being the old war-horse that he was, he bounced back again and again and again. He was the personification of courage, guts, passion, and love…….love for his countrymen.

The sons that he left behind……..his blood runs in them…….Singapore needs for them (or one of them) to pick up the torch (the beacon of hope) and continue the fight………..its not over as yet.

My heartfelt condolence to JBJ’s family. I am actually at a lost for words because I feel a certain sense of shame, minding my own business for far too long when it is clear for all to see that the country is being run by a bunch of despicable people. Singaporeans perhaps do not deserve some one like JBJ who literally gave up everything to represent the ordinary people. JBJ soldiered on in a wicked political environment and never did he yield to the scums in white who relentlessly persecuted him.
Rest in peace JBJ, as a true patriot !

He made such an impact on my legal education, with his brilliant speeches in Parliament, judgments and arguments in court. Seeing him on the streets in Singapore throughout my years in law school seemed to serve as a reminder of that we should follow our deepest beliefs, no matter how unpopular they appear to others or the inconveniences that accompany such beliefs.

When I finally summoned the courage to walk up to him one day and purchase his book The Hatchet Man, he shook my hand with a deep stare into my eyes, almost as if he was speaking to me in silence.

I think that day was perhaps 5 or 4 years ago. Now that he is suddenly gone, he leaves such a big gaping hole in that small island.

I hope others will come to realise what the old man was always talking about, however foreign his language seemed to be.

JBJ has left but his fighting spirit in defending the common man’s voice in Parliament will be remembered by all irrespective of one’s understanding of freedom and Justice. He is the “Mahatma Gandhi” of Post-Independent Singapore. The passage of his contributions towards caring society and well-being of his people will be remembered by all who treasure the making of a society that reflects the will of its silent majority. The journey continues—Sir, thank you for the courage and caring shown by you. As you always mentioned, the only one we should fear is the Lord, the conscience of our heart. Goodbye and may your soul rejoice in heaven.

I cried when I heard of your departure. It was as though i lost my dad a second time. I was looking forward to support your new party as my dad and i did when you were at Cheng San…it was so close.

Singaporeans do not deserve to have you…it’s like “casting pearls before swine”.

Farewell JBJ, may your soul rest with God and may all your years of tireless fighting for our rights return to God. It is time to take your well deserved rest and may God takes over this role and do what is necessary.
(Isaiah 57:2 Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.)
I thank God for sending you down to earth to do his purpose. You are so richly and abundantly blessed by God and you have transferred His blessing upon you to the poor and the lowly, to give them a voice and to speak on their behalf when their voices are too small to be heard. You suffered for a cause and we will remember that, so your fight will not be in vain and your good name will go down in the history of Singapore.
(Job 36:7 He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.)

JBJ’s 82 age really coincided with the expensive 82 MPs. But does $1.066 millions (82x $13,000 per month ) per month of taxmoney can even compete and command respect compared to a lone passionate and righteous man who always do the right thing. It is time these 82 MPs start to do the right thing rather than do the thing right to appease their dishonourable masters.

There were only two true ‘Politicians ‘in Singapore .One made politics for himself and one made it for everyone else.Mr JB JAYERATNAM was for everyone else.
I followed him in every elections. The man speaks for the people ,whose conviction in true democracy can be seen from the fire in his eyes.

Sadly many did not understand politics .Many singaporeans were selfcentred and it was everyman for himself.

This man I call should be addressed “THE TRUE FATHER OF SINGAPORE”
FOR HE CARED AND FOUGHT FOR THE PUBLIC.,NEVER DID HE TURN AND RUN WHEN THE ‘DOBERMANS’ WERE LET LOOSE.

Goodby JBJ we shall miss a truly brave man who fought on behalf of the fearful.

The quote below is Nelson Mandela who in 1964, whilst already serving a 5 year sentence was charged under the Suppression of Communism Act and faced the death penalty. These are the final lines of his opening statement.

“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities. It is an idea which I hope to live to live for, and to see realized. But my lord, if needs be , it is an idea for which I am prepared to die.”
