Head held high
In Quotes • 633 views • 9 Comments
To his eternal credit he never did crawl on bended knees, or ever begged for mercy. And it is to Lee Kuan Yew’s eternal shame that Jeyaretnam will leave the political scene with his head held high.

Former President of Singapore. Devan Nair went to live oversea and expired abroad.
AND FORMER RESIDENT( and citizen) OF SINGAPORE
Was the Former President a loyal citizen?
I hope that no Cabinet Member will be so pragmatic as to live a life of plenty and pleasure abroad to prove his/her love(patriotic) for the Country he/she once ruled. Worse if they bring their families and fortunes(made in SIN) along.
IT IS TANTAMOUNT TO BETRAYAL IN MY OPINION.
It’s tantamount to betrayal in my opinion.

patriot,
I’m not surprised he went to live abroad… I think our island became a very unpleasant place for him after the claims of alcoholism were brought upon him. Maybe that was the only way he knew of seeking some peace and dignity.

Saint Splattergut;
Devan should have stayed and fight to clear the ‘claim’ against him. As a President Of Singapore, he crumbled under pressure from his colleague(s).
Compare him(Devan) to Mr JB Jeyaretnam, an opposition politician that was bankrupted, jailed and ridiculed, the Former was just simply UNPATRIOTIC.
Hopefully, the Present Parliamentarians will not behave like him.
I would like to say here that I shall view any politician who claims to be in politics for the sakes of the people and the country a betrayor the moment he/she settle outside this country. I will even go as far as to say, any transfer by politician, of fortune made in SIN, to offspring(s) and siblings abroad, is as great a betrayal to Sigaporeans and Singapore.
Thank You sincerely for the interaction Saint Splattergut.

And may I take the histories of two well known(at least to the people of Chinese Origin) Chinese Figures in Confucius and Quyuan(the Scholar link to the Dumpling Festival of the Chinese). The Latter committed suicide by drowning himself when he was disappointed with his Ruler. Not the wisest thing to do I must say, but for that, he was reverred for patriotism.
Confucius went from state to state to seek for high posts, fame and recognitions, whenever he was not offered his ambition, he moved to seek it in other states. He was said to have been disfavoured and when so, again went over to enemy states to fulfill his ambition. He must be a master of pragmatism, I would say. Well he was(is) famous, but not for the Reason of loyalty.
Pardon me if I have intepreted ‘patriotism’ differently, in SIN, it seems to me that pragmatism is the preffered ethos.

Uh.. in this age…
there is no loyalty to any country or company…
It’s who pay you the best or offer the best prospectt…
end of day… when you retire , you want to be retiring worry-free.
And help the poor and needy in your own ways …

If i remember correctly, Mr. Devan Nair was sued for some statements that he made. It would be very difficult for him to stay in Singapore during that time. Mr. Devan Nair had also worked loyally for Singapore. It was quite sad that he was forced to leave Singapore. He was very sad to leave Singapore as well.
comparison
One is a despot and the other a real patriot, both will be remembered for different reasons.
The despot lacks integrity and credibility, has great difficulty telling the truth, is self serving and has insatiable lust for power. Serving the people is the last thing on his mind.
JBJ was all that is contrary to the despot.
I will always see beauty in JBJ, a man who departed with dignity.

You can see how much sacrifice and sincere JB was when you compare his actions against those who ran away ….Aung San Suu Kyi was given an opportunity to leave Burma when her husband was ill but she knew that she could never re-enter Burma if she did …. she stayed ….

He fought a good fight, determined, unflinchin and securely dug in, come what may. It is a great loss to the people of Singapore and it is my fervent hope that someone will carry on where he left.
Someday. his name will be cast in stone beside Lim Chin Siong, Ong Teng Cheong, Devan Nair and others who have walked the same steps as him.
This fight for freedom, equality and justice will go on for as long as tyranny reign in our nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
