The best part of Chua Sheng Yang's letter is that he deemed TOC as anti-government.

What a joke! Has he been intoxicated or what? Open debate, freedom of speech, pro-democracy, pro-human rights, etc... to him means anti-government!?

In my view, TOC has enabled real freedom of speech, allowing people to really question, to debate and exchange ideas openly on social/political issues, to the political maturing of the readers in the process. To me, this is one very important aspect of total defence, the pscychological part.

Before this, no one had been doing this job - not the PAP, not the government, not our school education, not the MSM - of facilitating the political maturing of the people. Hence the stereotyping that our people being an apathetic lot.

This minibonds saga and the together action lead by Tan Kim Lin and closedly reported by TOC (our MSM cannot be bothered to report) shows that we people can get together, and help one another in solving our problems, and in seeking social justice. It's a good start. It showed that Singaporeans are not an apathetic lot, afterall. And I started to feel the bond among the people, the faith among each other, of being able to help one another, is starting to grow.

Such initiation and experience are what genuinly bonds people together. I hope the day will come when it becomes common that when we walk by one another in the streets, we could spontaneously smile to or greet each another. I realise this cannot be done by some 4 million smiles campaign.

Our society needs more people like TKL, who have the passion to share his expertise/knowledge with the people, and to come forward to help doing what is right for our society.

Is this CSY an idiot?? I am wondering if your life saving is wiped out entirely, I bet you will be at the HL park pondering what is going on with MAS or the PAP. MAS and PAP dare not meet those affected immediately and do the repair job, but have to wait for our dear TKL to do the job of raising the red light. I hope CSY will see some light in this and not to be the first class idiot in singapore.

"then i dare you to post you photo online to let people see who you are."

What did you know ? Chua Sheng Yang could just be a hired gun to spout rubbish, feed propaganda and lies. There might be infinite "Chua Sheng Yang" waiting to be hired to write such a nonsensical brainless article. After all our shittyTimes is not known for Nation-Building and gov-mouthpiece press for nothing.

"Poor citizen like me don’t invest in anything. Thanks goodness."

Personally, you didn't. But CPFly and shitly, the gov/TC invest on these and bad investments on your behalf. Should thank the gov for such "goodness". Nowhere in the world can you see such a government that "full of love and compassion" when it comes to money. Now we must repay those "love and compassion" of the gov through more PayAndPay schemes.

Seems like many have a common perception of the MSM based on their decades of living in singapore and reading or listening or watching it daily.

Is the saying "no wind cannot have wave" still applicable in this instance?

I hope to hear it from the "horse's" mouth so-2-speak, what they feel about the common perception and what keeps them wanting to continue working in the MSM with regards to the common perception.

Could someone conduct a 'live' interview with the more well-known MSM employees to find out their honest subconscious reasons for working in the MSM? What motivates them to continue working there? Must have contributed a lot to the people ?

I have to say, ya lor. u believe me meh ? ;)

Poor citizen like me don't invest in anything. Thanks goodness.

However, I appreciate what Mr Tan has done for many affected investors. What piss me off is how an ordinary person like Mr Tan who has been sincerely trying to help these people has his character assassinated. Why? Because he's a threat to the PAP now? Is PAP getting fearful of him to want to character assassainate him? What a coward!

Anyway, the next meeting with the investors will be held next Saturday. I sincerely hope many people who supports Mr Tan will continue to show their supports by showing up at the Speaker Corner. Mr Tan needs our supports now. It doesn't matter whether we are the affected investors or simply an online reader. Don't let the bullies fear us nor frighten him away. Let us united as one, for the sake of sg and the people.

May God bless and guide Mr Tan all the way!

I believe there are many PAP NMP's reading these comments , well if you have a heart for the people of Singapore. Please do whats right for these people.

Remember, your main purpose is to serve the PEOPLE of SINGAPORE, and not do the HIP HOP .......

It would be good if you could contribute to the comments section for a proposed resolution.

No. 62 Gerald Giam "See the problem is that Mr Chua now has a “sense of trepidation” from seeing Mr Tan Kin Lian at speakers’ corner. Tsk!"

I have more trepidation when PM Lee announced not one, but two IRs for Singapore; when Mas Selamat escaped and PM Lee said "What to do? It happened. Move on"; when SP announced 21% electricity tariff increase and prepayment system; when town councils lost millions and shrugged it off as insignificant.

seems the pawn has been deployed.

what's next?

a few things. Anti-government means anti chiam and low too (opposition members). Anti government carries the connotation that it's anti people, since essential (okay to a large extent) the people elect the government.

Anti-party means anti some political party, like pap or sdp or workers party. In Chua's case, what he meant to say was anti-pap, no? Slight difference there.

In any case, this shouldn't even be an issue at all. What's at stake is the clown of a paper that publish something fit for the comic strip.

No. 60) Plumber "who is chua sheng yang anyway?"

Some dispensable ammunition?

Anyway, this whole episode has been a good thing, albeit at the expense of uncalled-for allegations about Mr Tan and TOC. As some have pointed out, it's a form of publicity for TOC, and I am sure those who are discerning will appreciate the articles here. Comments are another thing altogether, but then they are personal, not representative of TOC's views, and do provide a much needed light-hearted look at the harsh realities of life.

Gilbert, I admire the sentiments.

To be honest, I'd also like to discuss policies in an objective light. You know, give credit where credit is due. But I guess this is what happens when the political scene here has really been marked by so much opacity and 'Newspeak' (a term from Orwell's 1984) that you stop trusting many of the policies when they are announced, that they were for the good of the nation.

How do you convince people like Chua?

How do you make people see that they've been muzzled for so long they don't even recognize their muzzles?

I was at HLP the other day watching TKL give his speech, followed by Goh Meng Seng. The sheer spontaiety of it... the sheer feeling of watching a handful of people actually voicing discontent... dunno how to describe it. It's really just a few hundred people, mostly old folks, but when they collectively answered 'No!' to something TKL asked, it actually felt more gratifying than being in any NDP parade. I think that was when I realized what has been stolen from us, really. Something that makes us human.

Oh well. rambling again.. :)

Here's an earlier letter that Mr Chua sent to ST Forum back in March:

Demos at Speakers' Corner? No, they could hurt S'pore

WHILE it is heartening to see the Government's willingness to embrace the viewpoints of Singaporeans, even those of dissenting voices, I cannot help but feel a sense of trepidation at proposed plans to open Speakers' Corner to 'peaceful' demonstrations. While it is essential that Singaporeans are allowed to express their views freely, such a move is unnecessary and could even be detrimental to the climate of stability in Singapore we have become used to as our way of life.

The potential for such demonstrations to turn violent will always exist and the potential for extremists to take advantage of the situation is high. Having come to appreciate Singapore as a stable and peaceful place to live in, I would not want to live in a city full of protests and demonstrations as a daily occurrence. One need only look at neighbouring countries to see the disruption to the economy and daily lives of citizens such activities can bring.

Current avenues for dissenting opinions are more than sufficient and I do not wish Singapore to degenerate just to accommodate Western principles of 'freedom of speech'.

Chua Sheng Yang

See the problem is that Mr Chua now has a "sense of trepidation" from seeing Mr Tan Kin Lian at speakers' corner. Tsk!
