Workers are very practical. If they have to choose between losing their jobs and taking a pay cut, they would choose less pay.

Is 1st world Cost of Living workable with non-1st world salary?

CPF payable by employers is a big cost to businesses.

Does employer need to pay Foreign workers CPF ?

Can singapore workers compete on salary and still Pay And Pay for the very high priced flat which they lease from the state?

I hope the above unanswered questions can be answered right here.

Ex-PAP branch treasurer jailed for embezzling over S$78,000

    Hello, anyone home ?

    Just curious to know,
if this ex- PAP person had been paid salary of 78K more a year, would that have prevented him from committing the same?

    Why I ask :

    1. If salaries are cut, would it not mean more corruption ? Super Highly paid means no corruption right?

  3. blackfeline 13 November 2008

what a stupid no brainer! will she takes a pay reduction or resign from her current privileged position? lead the way and stop talking rubbish!

  4. unions should push for legislation to protect workers who are retrenched by their profitable companies after their long service with them . workers may not mind retrenchment if they are paid off decently – for example a minimum of a month of severance pay for each year of service. the retrenchment monies can help the families over one or two years of layoff.

    Madam Halimah,

What if the less pay falls below the living wage?

    Cheers

ha! ha! ha! ha! . . . . . I think this is how the PAP govt works.
Everytime they feel like they are becoming corrupted, they increase their own pay to prevent themselves from being corrupted. Talk about missing the trees for the mountain……

  8. Just got an unsolicited email, look at what they are advertising, and you wonder why Singaporeans have no jobs

I fail to see the need for such a statement.

“…between losing their jobs and taking a pay cut, they would choose less pay.”

    can be alternatively re-phrased as:

“between having no pay and having some pay, they would prefer having less.”

We’re paying top-pay for people to think up words like these?? On another note, can’t this also be applied to our top civil servants? Taking a ‘pay-cut’ to ensure a virtually perpetual career?

  10. lol @ self pwn!

“Ministers are very practical. If they have to choose between losing their jobs and taking a pay cut, they would choose less pay.”

  11. pigscanfly 13 November 2008

    Ark, are you sure?!

i thot it shld be “Ministers, on the other hand, are very idealistic. If they have to choose between their cabinet positions and taking a pay cut, they would rather return to the private sector”.

yap, that shld be the argument to raise their own pay come end of the year.

i thot it shld be “Ministers, on the other hand, are very idealistic. If they have to choose between their cabinet positions and taking a pay cut, they would rather return to the private sector”. – pigscanfly (#11)

Shouldn’t that be the reason for the ministers to quit and stay with the private sector for good?

  13. moonlighting MP 13 November 2008

at the last count, Halimah held 17 positions in various organizations.
basically moonlighting as member of parliament whilst doing so called other jobs. in effect she can afford to lose several jobs and she would not even blink.
isn’t it nice to have incredible job security whilst dispensing no brainer advice ?

it is important to retrain, review paycut, replan on expenses in this downturn,
but more crucial is not to re vote the PAP if you did previously.

  14. Wakou… even quotes like this can attract anti-PAP sentiments..
This online portal is slowly morphing into anti-PAP portal..

Wakou… even quotes like this can attract anti-PAP sentiments. – isa

Mdm Halimcob is speaking the obvious. It is as if she is treating workers as dumb-dumb.

  16. Workers are very practical.
If so, Minister and MP are more practical, they should lead example for the WORKERS taking a pay cut.
They should taking a pay cut too…………..

  17. Ministers are very practical. If they have to choose between corruptions and taking million$$$ pay, they would choose million$$$ pay.

  18. looks like TOC is a site for feedback from true blue ordinary singaporeans,
pro Singapore rather than anti PAP lah. this is another way of seeing things.
this portal is open to all and it attracts all types, even those who suck on PAP
    bananas can give their views.

  19. Is she paid MP’s allowance to tell those who might have to see her at meet the MPs session such rubbish? This is probably her one liner to those poor souls who have to fight with cheap foreign workers for jobs. Think we will be paid in RMB or rupees soon.

  20. Singapore Resident 13 November 2008

Sinkees are very practical. If they have to choose between eating CHICKEN and over-stretching their budget, they would choose to eat FISH.

  21. Wow, such profound insight.
Why didn’t I think of it?

    :(

  22. Isn’t that being a Captain Obvious…
