ok my lawyer fren who is more eloquent than me helped me edit. Wonder if ST will print this-

Whoever wins, we lose

I refer to the articles ‘A-G draws the line on freedom of speech’ (ST Nov 5 2008, Home B4, B5). While the verdict is still open as to whether the articles by The Wall Street Journal are libelous, we may already have lost in the court of public opinion. In fighting to protect the reputation of our government, not only are we fueling the (mis)perception that our leaders are quick to sue, justifiably or otherwise, we are also staking the reputation of independence of our judiciary on an unnecessary argument. We may be a young nation, but surely we are mature enough not to need to justify ourselves all the time to the international community? In the wake of the recession, let’s just get our priorities right, close ranks and move on.

USA is a long way from having a filibustered congress, unlike some other nations which has real filibustering. - Filibust (#7)

I just realised the US political system is not entirely skewed by overwhelming Democrat presence. The democrats may be gaining a majority control in the White House, the Senate and the Lower House, but day-to-day running of the individual states actually falls on the responsibility of the individual state government (e.g. the New York governor and his advisors) and respective state parliament (e.g. the New York Assembly). It is only in the federal system that representation is skewed.

USA asking and begging for people to turn out to vote, to get a better more accurate election so-to-speak.

Elsewhere, there is walkover? how does it do to a tiny country, i wonder ?

I am oblivious, nice to meet you.

We do not have the fortune and luck to have so many many talents loh, so walkover loh. - To Donaldson Tan (#8)

It says a lot when we stop describing PAP victories as landslide victory but walkover instead.

5) Donaldson Tan on November 5th, 2008 12.30 pm

Do not worry lah. At least in the next round, the people can do magic on the result if they are not happy over this one-party state. They have many many talents in the candidacy to choose from lah.

You must have seen both Obama & McCain having to really work the ground and canvass for the votes.

USA is a long way from having a filibustered congress, unlike some other nations which has real filibustering.

USA has enough talents serving in Alternative parties and ruling parties and will not lead to 1 party state.

Its said this was how the election was won:

1. campaigning : a lot of the electorate did their own campaigning on the net by encouraging and asking people to come out and vote.

2. The internet was used very wisely and effectively - youtube, facebook and forums and blogs and emails. Obama had dominated the media. By this, i am not saying he manipulates the media or who controls the media but that he is able to best utilize the media. That is a gentleman way to win.

3. Electrifying oratory.

4. Younger vs Oldest.

5. Financial Crisis and world record DEBT the citizens must pay for maybe 1 century.

6. last but not least, thanks to bush. In terms of his unpopularity.

When Bush won 8 years ago, I could not believe it! SADDENED. Shocked till today.

When Bush won 4 years again, I could not believe it!! DISENFRANCHISED and UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED BEYOND WORDS CAN DESCRIBE. Shocked till today.

When Obama stepped forward - I see HOPE by way of CHANGE.

CHANGE EVERYTHING!

it appears that the USA is leaning towards a one-party state.

But the parties do not have full control on how the Senate and House members vote and the Court system is really independent.

I am a bit concerned. Given that the democrats already won the Presidency and that they are on track of gaining majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives, it appears that the USA is leaning towards a one-party state.

does america redraw its boundaries ?

They do for a different reason.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymander#Better_representation_of_minority_groups

Better representation of minority groups

Gerrymandering can be used to create districts that better represent certain minorities. Such districts have been created to ensure representation for African American, Hispanic, and Asian American ethnic communities in the USA, particularly in California, Texas, and other states in the South.
