This is terrible.
There is going to be some pushing and shoving between Tipper and the agent Uthayanan. While the battle rages, what is MOM planning to do besides issuing warnings and threats? Is there a timeline issued by MOM for the case to be resolved ASAP? Does TWC2 plan to continue to provide meals to them? What if this saga is a protracted one?
Goodmorning Gem,
Those agents get 8.5K per head just to bring these people into singapore and made them work at what some $17/day? If this is not human trafficking or human slaves, then I really don’t have any better words for it.
Actually MOM is holding $5k for each of these workers that they collected from the employer as a bond. They should just use this money to pay them their wages owed and send them back.
But then again given their don’t rock the boat mentality, I doubt any of our civil servants would even dare suggest something like this. Most likely they will just forfiet the money and put it into the Govt’s coffers.
Nothing new to that alky.
frankly….as much as i sympathise with them…this is nothing new…it takes 2 to clap..
Good morning to you too tiredsingaporean,
It is modern day slavery and human trafficking indeed and it is repulsive to think our govt is playing a role in it. Abhorable!
Like what alky has said, MOM ought to use the $5k bond money to bail these workers out first. Thereafter to go after and punish the perpetrators and make them pay full compensation with penalties for distress caused to them. It cannot be any lesser than this.
if he was born with a silver spoon,
or inherited money
no one would not have to suffer like this.
gemami,
Unfortunately I don’t think they will put the construction company at such a position as they are handing the job of satisfying the PM’s dream.
>>Actually MOM is holding $5k for each of these workers that they collected from the employer as a bond.
No $5 per worker lah….security bond of $5k via insurance guarantee only $128+…correct me if i’m wrong – i recently did one for 1 foreign worker…only bank guarantee have to place $5k FD with bank…
#8)Phiber, sad isn’t it? What kind of a dream it is to dream of poor folks being abandoned like that?
#9)MeeSiamMahHum, so where does the $8000 go to? Are you able to share with us the breakdown?
We have laws to protect all employees and visitors to our country. Mistreatment of any employee regardless whether they are local or foreign should not be allowed. We have millions dollar minister looking after labour issues why he is not doing anything about it. Mistreatment of the Blangladish worker may seem for now to be a minor issue. Remember, they came from a Islamic country and if word get around, and a mullah start speaking about it during Friday prayer, then thing could really get hot. They may be poor but decend people. Even if there were no danger from radical people, as fellow human we must treat them fairly. There will alway be greedy employer willing to exploit their employees. We may be storing problems for the future.
