The Singapore Democratic Party will be at Speakers’ Corner (Hong Lim Park) on 31st December (Wednesday) from 6pm to 12 midnight to ring in the new year.
According to the SDP website, the occasion is also to pay tribute to the late J B Jeyaretnam and singing songs in memory of him. “As 2008 passes into history, we will sing Auld Lang Syne to remember JBJ,” the website says, “and all that he has done for Singapore.”
Guests include Mr Tan Kin Lian, Mr Jufrie Mahmood and Mr Chia Ti Lik. They will be speaking at the countdown gathering.
Singapore Literature Prize winner, Mr Ng Yi-Sheng, will be on hand to do a poetry recital.
There will be singing and a simple dinner of hotdogs and chips will be served.
“Spend the evening with friends and fellow citizens who care about justice and democracy for our country,” the SDP says. “Rather than getting drunk and dancing to nothing in particular, make Wednesday evening a truly meaningful one.”

It’s a good alternative to the usual fireworks and screaming mad singaporeans going gaga over nothing. Lets keep it simple with friends and family.
Kudos to the SDP for doing this.

Then again since I am put on moderation mode, for reasons that I cannot understand; you may all have to reconsider what I just wrote.
Like I said, we must all read broadly and hopefully understand the world as it is, rather than what we want it to be.

I am really disappointed with the SDP. Bush realised how stupid it was to call them Freedom Fries and the do nothing SDP still wants to revive that name?

I dont have enough information currently to add on this meaningfully. I am sorry. I would first need to reference certain material which I am not allowed to do so in this site. Thus I will have to take a few weeks to respond to this.

Good work SDP.
Let’s rock the night with no alcohol.
listen to alternative view.
Remember the late JBJ who has been with Singaporean with his courage, honest, intergrity he has for his life.
And the speakers on that night will make good speech for all Singaporean.

I worry the SOC will come and arrest the citizens. This is a police state, they will do all sorts of things to silence the oppositions
Leanne
If you think it is a police state then leave like your great example of Nair/
Don’t worry, the opposition will not be silenced. Well, not the SDP at least. :)
I will be there, but not to celebrate.
I will be there to reflect, regroup and rejuvenate. See some of you then.
And poster #1 miss peabody, the literature prize winner in question was featured in on this site before – http://theonlinecitizen.com/2008/12/boy-wonder/

So SDP is paying tribute to JBJ?
HMm tgt in life he was WP?
No not sliming him or SDP.
Trying to figure out why WP is not paying tribute to its ex-leader?

Who is the Singapore Literature Prize winner, Mr Ng Yi-Sheng? Never ever heard of him or her bfr. It depends on the liaison officer, if he says, its safe and good to go. We go.
Why even try to complicate life beyond how complicated it is already is beyond me
