Kinda weird when you see pump prices going down but then transport prices just keep going in one direction - UP! No wonder these transport operators are getting richer day by day.

The Gerard must be too free nothing to do so he is given more appointments. Still nothing to do?

It's the same all rounf effect we are facing each day.

Prices of HDB flats spiralling out of control, no one responsible enough to take control. Prices of basic commodities shooting off to all directions, no one responsible enough to take control. Utility costs swirling like a typhoon, no one responsible enough to take control. Citizens tearing their hair out over living standard, no one responsible enough to take control.

Why do we even need to vote for our parliamentary representatives, I wonder. The PAP talks about having a one-party rule. I think I can do better than this. Let there be no government. It's the best since it makes no difference having one anyway.

"But transport operators have always argued that any changes made to the existing concessions will affect full-fare paying commuters."
"a TransitLink spokesman told The New Paper: 'All concessionary fares are effectively cross-subsidised by full-fare paying commuters.'"
"'avoid any adverse impact on full-fare paying commuters'."

3 times. In 1 article. Indirectly mention that Cutting Fares for Tiertiary Students WILL affect Full Fare Commuters.
With such high profit margins, I Sincerely Wonder Y tat is the case.

Then again, if the Operators are so concern about raising the cost of Full Fare Commuters, y has fares increased? Spilt Milk is Spilt Milk, we shouldn't cry. Thus now with the profits and down turn, shouldn't Fares ACROSS the BOARD be reduced?

Not to Mention, seats are being Removed, isn't that a compromise of service? Prices should be farther reduced.

"MP for Aljunied GRC Cynthia Phua, who has raised the issue in Parliament several times, told The New Paper she does not buy operators' explanation that changes to existing concessions will translate into higher costs for full fare-paying commuters."

Even a MP also do not believe the Operator's Explanation.

"But PTC chairman Gerard Ee pointed out that its hands are tied. 'It's not within our power to force operators to give concessions - that's up to the operators,' he said."

Once again, the authorities are unable to help. Here, i wonder wat PTC is for?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start of Side Track

"The Public Transport Council (PTC) was established in 1987 as an independent body to approve and regulate bus services, public transport fares and ticket payment services. It is entrusted with the challenging mission of balancing commuters' interest with the long-term viability of the public transport operators.
We seek to :
create a comprehensive and integrated bus network;
assure quality bus services;
maintain affordable bus and train fares for the public; and
safeguard public interest in the mode of payment of fares. " - Taken from http://www.ptc.gov.sg/

Too long liao ._.

meaning: any regulations that impinges on profit maximization is NOT within PTC control, conversely, regulations that beneft profit maximization is within their control

so..... why is the meaning of a regulatory board and why do you need a regulatory board to increase private profits when they can jolly well do the job ten times better themselves?

meaning: what is the need for PTC then?

PTC is created to make those state-owned operators appeared to be competing in a "free and open market".

Mr Ee, well done.

You have worked as required by those who put you there.

"Oh, so can only regulate upwards not downwards?"

Bus commuters should be grateful that there is a transport council to make sure that you are not paying 3 dollars per bus ride in good times.

OR

Global forces are out of our control.

"Then what exactly is the role of PTC?
Approve fare hike when it comes?"

well well, didn't you answer your own question? :)
they don't approve once in a blue moon and scream everywhere just to make sure you know they didn't approve.

The core functions of PTC, as governed by the PTC Act, include:

    * Licensing of bus services that charge fares;
    * Regulating bus service standards;
    * Licensing of bus service operators;
    * Licensing of transit ticket payment service providers; and
    * Regulating bus and train fares.
