Use it or lose it

In Quotes • 546 views • 15 Comments

What civil society activists and conscientious citizens have to do is not just to step back and say ‘this is just tokenism, this is just concessionary’. What is probably a better strategy is to occupy these spaces, because in a sense, if you do not use it, you do lose it, or if you use it badly or dangerously, you also lose it.

Dr Kenneth Paul Tan, assistant dean, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

One should grasp the space, and also be wary.

Anyone knows what does the statement means ? Can’t decipher what he is saying.

All I know that that what this guy says is just as good as not saying. Who define bad or dangerous usages of such space , the gov or the citizen ? Can kangaroo government knows what is right or what is wrong when they are so morally corrupted, let alone define usages of such space ? How noble and how convenient to put such remark indicating that that we are the mercy and indebt to those clowns that are supposed to serve the nation and the citizen, and end up the citizen and nation serving those clowns instead.

Maybe this guy will want to educate us how to exercise our space, or even better still, lead against the LEE occupation (yeah, we have Japanese Occupation in WW2, now we have LEE occupation !).

I feel it’s prudent to read the entire article from which the above quote originates from before drawing to a conclusion and a response……….

Thanks #4) Zeitgeist. You’re right, it’s prudent to read the entire article before making our comments. I think TOC need to link such quotes to the articles they are taken from so that a correct overview is given. If not, this is tantamount to mis-leading and we will all be victims of mis-selling.

I think this is a valid and good call by the good doctor and we would do well to heed the call to occupy the spaces that are available to us, whether in our own personal capacity or collectively, like here in TOC.

gemami,

All quotes in this “Quote” section are linked to their sources, including this latest one by Kenneth Tan.

Also, I think the section is called “Quote” and I believe we do not have to provide explanation as to what the quotes mean. Even the Straits Times (and many other publications) have this quote thingy.

Hi Andrew,

My oversight. Take back my comments in post #5), with sincere apologies.

Hi Andrew,

I meant well when I put in the suggestion as I couldn’t help but notice that some of the responding posts apparently had taken the quote out of context which I figure was the result of not knowing that the red italics are clickable to access the source of the qoute. Not all readers who were moved to participate in this forum
are savvy enough to the intricacies of navigating the internet’s many applications.
Many are probably retirees and senior citizens who are new to cyberspace. Perhaps a thought spared in their direction would be appreciated.

Cheers

PS. To Gemami

Sorry for the unintentioned trip up!

Nothing to it Zeitgeist. It was purely my mistake for missing the link. Apologies to all, again.

I dont know what he is talking abt. As for us. All I know is we have staked a claim here and we have been writing the social narrative in earnest since then. We were here first, if govt comes, they will simply have to come in as second or maybe third or fourth. They have to stand in line. This is courtesy, if not we will simply have to tell the facts of life. That is how we have always seen it.

Only a fool tries to control what is impossible to control.

SD,

He’s talking to the regular man in the street. Not to the converted.

SD/Loyola/Daniel,

Common sense tell you: He is from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He is been paid to do the job (elite/talented), blowing the trumpet. “LEE occupation “….LOL…..got it.

CA,

If you know KPT well, you might reconsider that opinion. :)
