Report from the Straits Times:
POLICE yesterday arrested a man in his 40s for vandalism, after a wall outside Parliament House was defaced at lunch hour.
Scribbled in black marker on the top right corner of the wall were the words: ‘Hi Harry Lee. I love you.’
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is called Harry by some of his family and old friends.
The wall, located at the junction of North Bridge Road and Parliament Place, is about the height of an average man. It serves as a signboard and has the Singapore Crest and the words ‘Parliament’ and ‘Singapore’ on it.
At about 1.30pm yesterday, uniformed guards were seen running out of Parliament House to nab the man while he scribbled on the wall.
They wrestled to the ground the medium-built man, who was wearing a red T-shirt and brown trousers.
It took three guards to subdue him as he refused to be pinned down and tried to wriggle free.

he will not give me his money.
Give that guy a break, don’t treat that lifeless piece of wall better than your fellow humans.
firebomb first and now funny graffiti…. who knows what will be next?
maybe people in Singapore are gettin high on Bob Marley songs….

He was arrested because the Gay Act has not been passed yet.

Look for yourselves. How many articles here are actually constructive? Not many. Most have a political agenda which does not benefit the public but the few who want political power for the next election”
Can we find the same in the MSM that is any different???
we should try to support the few who want political power for next election.
if they get elected then they have a chance to change things.
they are better than some cs who do not even dare to vote for the right party.
it can be understand if cs can only vote fo pap. or any ruling party next time.
toc keep up your good work even if it is a politics work.
because it is constructive to have stronger opposition party.
if not a country with no opposition will be like a dictator.
maybe not really true.
can pap go the china one party way?
>>70) Don’t kill me. I’m just a sparrow

Well, I don’t know which articles here are those having a political agenda – but what’s so wrong even if you are right that the articles carry a political agenda? So what if the article writers are writing to gain political power?
Oh by the way, there is at least one former ST “journalist” (I can’t bring myself to use the term without quote marks) who is currently a PAP MP. Have you any comment on her?

Strange – I thought criticising the people for being ungrateful was something the PAP MPs seem to like to do – instead of talking about improving things.
See: http://commentarysingapore.blogspot.com/2006/11/kopi-tiam-talk-parliamentary-debate.html
>>ask for more and more money, more and more political power.
Huh? Are you seriously talking about the PAP ministers and MPs or the opposition?
>>How can you have faith in this kind of people to make good changes?
LMAO
Instead of arresting the guy, they should have given him the option to rewrite the affectionate remark into the govt’s guests/visitors’ book. Then, if he refuses, they can arrest him mah. That will show that the govt is compassionate and understands that he meant well but in zeal, should not write on walls belonging to the govt.
After all, people in ST gush with pro-PAP sympathies all the time, so being obsequious is not a crime- on the contrary, it is a career-enhancing trait that can carry you from the newspaper room into Parliament!
Hey hey hey …Maybe he did ever tried very hard to express his love by writing to ST Forum but his love expression letter had not be publish. He is doing it in good faith so it is not an offence.
Hope he is discharge early and recommend him another alternative to express his love in TOC…….
There is something amiss here and Harry is not telling.
The ST should go interview Harry and get to the bottom of it ;and tell us what this is all about. Didn’t someone say that there are no secrets in SG? Why so secretive then?
ST, go find out what the hanky-panky is all about.
77) sarek_home,
Well said. Thumbs up to you.
To add on, can anyone out there tell us what this LHL’s govt has contributed constructively to Singapore since he took over?
Aiyah, TOC.
What happened to #77) sarek_home’s comment.
My reply now seems out of place and holds no meaning. Why ah?
Hell hath no fury, like a lover scorned. Was he loved or was he loathed? Can’t we even express some words of admiration or do we have to express it like Elvis’s “Flaming Love.” Sigh, very confused.
gemami,
As we’ve said, reiterated and repeated: Comments which have nothing to do with the article will not be allowed. The above article is about a man scribbling graffiti. It is not about what TOC is or is not. Or whether TOC is pro-PAP or anti-PAP, whether TOC is pro-govt or anti-govt.
That is why Sarek_home’s comments are disallowed.
A lot of things in life are inter-related and in overlapping and shifting shades of grey and very seldom, if not never, in either straight-jacket black or white.
While parameter for comments can be drawn. A freer approach will result in wider capture of sometimes remote, if not falling within strict set parameter, yet important viewpoints which merit deeper thinking and analysis, though they may be presented in brash & blunt terms.
#67) theonlinecitizen,
Thanks for the clarification.
I agree with the reply from #68) To theonlinecitizen, and I sincerely hope TOC does not step in too quickly to remove post that it deems inappropriate to the topic of discussion. Sometimes a bit of deviation is necessary and so long as it does not deviate too far off, it should be allowed and permitted; if not for anything else, but just for the continuation of the discussion.
Better if TOC can intervene with a post or two and call for a return to the topic of discussion. Have a standard statement ready for copy & paste. This way, it can free itself from having to “say, repeat & reiterate” ever so often.
I understand there have been previous discussions that have gone out of control and I think this is why TOC finds it necessary to jump in to “nip the problem in the bud’, but this might not be a good thing if the jumping in is too quickly done, which in itself might prevent and hinder a healthy discussion.
In short, it can piss people off from future participation.
the full wiritting is
“go and sue me lee kuan yew”
“hi harry lee, i love you”
ST selectively took out the 1st line
So what is going to happen to this poor guy?
45) smallvice585 on January 15th, 2009 8.53 pm
I wonder if the vandal has to pay his IMH fees with his CPF
****
No, the state pays for the expenses as it is for assessment purposes. Nevertheless, he will receive treatment/medication in the process (if necessary) so it is to his advantage if has psychological issues.
I would have preferred the headline: “Devil declares love for Harry Lee, nearby man accidentally arrested in the process.” or even “The writing’s on the wall, Devil loves Harry Lee.”
Hehehe…
X – (#41)
Haha.. the joke insinuates that while the Russian like the president, but it was widely known that the rest of the people (in the restaurant, outside..) doesn’t, so he felt that it was dangerous letting his opinion out.
ok guys, let’s not go TOC bashing. In all of 43 years, TOC is one of the best thing that has ever happened in Singapore.
If any of you have been following the comments in TOC, you will know that there is a need to moderate some of the comments, or to have them disallowed.
It is not TOC’s fault but ours. Let us all try to stick to the subject of the tread and all will be well. Deviations must be avoided but sometimes, all it takes is for one with pre-set agenda to mess things up to undo the good works of others.
It is for this reason that I feel TOC ought to allow the comments to remain, and let readers judge and decide whether they are valid to the discussion or not. We will also be able to indentify these commentators and see them for who they are.
This way, TOC will not be solely undertaking the responsibiltity to filter the discussion, and therefore allow itself to come under unjust scrutiny and judgement.
I hope this comment is allowed to stay as it is not related to the subject of one who is so in love with Harry Lee. But the deviation above merits a response that puts things in their proper perspectives.
It is so damn brutal, the guys gonna be caned by writting 2 sentences on the wall.
Why this overdue hairy so persistent? cant he just calm down and die quietly?
77) gemami’s director,
Thank you Mr Director sir, but I thought your boss is my sister and she has been encouraging me to continue what I am doing and get paid for it too.
How to stop, even if I want to?
:) ;)
When Vally loves Harry – and Vally’s love is not requited.
Vally gets Sleepless in Singapore, due to one prozac too many issued at IMH.
Can Martyn See direct this unique-lee Singapore love story between our de facto Head of the State, Harry Lee; and his inamorata, Mr Vandal who needs to get the state of his head examined?
Can try make it for the 2010 CNY period to give Jack Neo a run for the blockbuster money!
And what if the message was CSJ I love you?
So we can never have a stature of him like Raffles..
if not, it will be very high maintenance cost for the taxpayer.
I wonder why this article is here in the first place, and also why there are so many comments on it.
The Million-Dollar Question on Singapore’s Million-Dollar Politicians:
Are they TRULY RESPECTED or IMPATIENTLY TOLERATED or ABJECTLY FEARED by Singaporeans (the very people who pay numerous taxes/dues towards their million-dollar salaries/bonuses/other perks)?

Despite his arrogance, you must give the man (LKY) at least some credit for bring the progress we have today. We have nothing when we got independent.
The comparison with the rest of the 3 Asian Tigers isn’t completely fair. It’s like asking why Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, or any other Asian countries why they can’t be like the 3 Tigers. So are you going to admit their government is worse than LKY?
It like asking your parents why some other parents are richer, more liberal on curfews, have different rules at home etc. Every family is slightly different. So is every country. What we can do is to continue improving ourselves.
a vandal is a vandal – regardless of what or where he scribbles or proclaims. imagine someone who scribbles his declared-love in marker ink on your door or wall – would you love/loathe him for doing that?
I think I do love Harry Lee. He brought Singapore from the third to the first world.
I give him some credit but more to the industrious people of Singapore.
He had a good product to sell – we, the smart and hardworking Singaporeans.
The rest is history.
However, a friend also told me over coffee that Harry is bringing us from the first back to the 3rd. He was commenting about sqatting toilets being more common nowadays.
So, I told him that I will consider buying his memoirs once that last instalment is completed. I think it would be within my life time.
The Singapore myth ends in a circle. Sounds rather poetic.
Guys, I think most of you misunderstood why he was arrested. I think he was arrested because he is poor, using such low budget way of expressing LOVE to LKY.
He should have order one of those colourful cotton mattress with some chinese characters written on it and hang it on the fence outside the Parliament House.
So LKY can bring it home after the Parliament session.
78) DavidSeeLeongKit on January 16th, 2009 10.08 pm
You may never get your question answered because
APATHETIC people of sg DO NOT, I say again, DO NOT!
read social-political blogs. and they are the majority.
people who read here are the minority non-apathetics.
so, the illusion we get is that oh many are thinking the same.
yes, but these are exactly the minority.
this minority and that majority are mutually exclusive.
I certainly don’t love Harry.
Mr Vandal is certainly in that sandwiched generation.
84) S K Chan on January 18th, 2009 3.29 pm I think I do love Harry Lee.
He brought Singapore from the third to the first world.
===
Do you really belive LKY brought singapore from 3rd to 1st world country? It is all but pure delusions pictured by politician and StraitTimes.
Look at people around us. There are so many poor and low income group. Senior citizen in their 70s are still struggling in coffee shop cleaning dishes. There are more beggars seen in hawker centres. People are working longer with lesser pay and more stress. Children are not enjoying their childcarehood but instead loaded with homeworks and ECA. … etc etc etc
LKY did not bring us to 1st world. Instead, he brought us 1st world cost of living but with developing nation living standard.
We all singaporeans got plucked while they (papees) laughed their heads off and many still buy into their story of how competent they are in bringing singapore into 1st world nation?

You mean to say that there are no hobos or vagrants in America? Or the UK?
