The Straits Times understands that someone threw the liquid at Mr Seng, 58, while he was at grassroots event at Yio Chu Kang commmunity club.
Mr Seng was burnt on his face, neck and back.
Another man, said to be the chairman of a temple, was also hurt and has been brought to SGH.
The suspect, believed to be a man, has been arrested.

Obviously Seng can’t solve problems in Yio Chu Kang, I suggest all MInisters wear crash helmets during walk about to prevent ppl from throwing thinner because now recession, many jobless and fed up with the ministers high pay.
The person who slapped the MP was an ex cabby. The person who burned the MP is also an ex cabby. Why are the ex cabbies so unhappy with the MP who is the advisor to the taxi drivers association?
What a good way to start the New Year.
$200 are you all sure ?When did they start giving so much.
Taxi drivers’ income have reduced significantly after NTUC and other companies muscled their way into the taxi trade. In the past, most of the taxi drivers owned the taxi’s they drive (or at least part of it).
Although Seng HT was the adviser to the taxi drivers, he actually favoured the interests of the bosses of the taxi companies more than the drivers. This situation is typical of employer-friendly Singapore where the workers don’t really have a voice to represent them.
Not surprising if there are copy-cat assault by workers who have grouses against employers. Anyone who appears to represent employers is at risk. MP’s should have body-guards during this recession time or else be armed.
This situation has engendered a lot of sympathy for the 70 year old uncle. It reminds me of the Les Miz story, where the main character was also pushed by circumstance into a corner. The distance between the led and the leaders seems to be growing and steps should be taken to reverse this trend.
To Johnnykid,
What i mean is that perhaps this is retribution to the person who has done something wrong while performing his duties and GOD knows.
It’s no more the meet the people’s session, it a BBQ session from now! any one knows when is the next session…………
The attack on ah seng led to bigger concerns, that of our missing limping singaporean Abang. still at large. at least no proof where he is. even till today.
i worry. national security is at risk when a terrorist is somewhere out there.
I don’t understand why the govt intends to charge the man when they already certified him to be crazy.
If he is not crazy, then there is something wrong with the system of giving hong baos and for that matter, upgrading to those who vote for the PAP and denying it to others who do not.
Must be a curious coincidence that the two attackers were taxi drivers and Ah Seng is the boss of the taxi drivers.
Food for thought.
Should a Patient be tried like as if he is not?
Let me use PAP’s most popular quote to SHT: Let’s move on !
Consider this. Lucky for the MP, this old man IQ is not very high. If he was to fill up the flammable material in a plastic bag instead of spilling from a bottle. I believe he would became a human torch.
Urge tax payers to get ready to pay more to the government as it would be SOP to have body guards for our MPs.
I think enough focus is given to SHT already. He has no reason to be messing with ang pows that do not come from his own pocket.
Let us discuss why old Ong did what he did.
a. Is he really a crazy old man?
b. Perhaps he was not happy he was overlooked and not invited to give out the ang pows over SHT?
c. Or maybe he had asked SHT earlier for a small bottle of petrol so that he could drive himself home but was given a bottle of thinner instead?
d. Could it be an accident when he accidently tripped over the red carpet and spilled the bottle of thinner on SHT before igniting it when he tried to balance himself?
Any other theories out there?
‘ read in Zaobao that SHT actually asked ppl to help the other guy also on fire when SHT is already on fire. This is too good to be true, unless he is so altruistic, i think this is another media propaganda to polish SHT image.’
Not surprising. Just last night Shin Min hadthe old man who last punched him in the face heaped high praises on SHT. If a person who hit him could praise him
so much, he must be very well-loved by the rest.
Local MSMs never fail to spin when the image of the pappies are down.
After all, SHT was a former editor of a Chinese daily
We have to agree to common, conventional premise here that even the most vicious man will have his circle of friends and even the kindest man will have his enemies and haters.
It is
just that cocky and disrespectable men that are publicly swear and curse at.
I repeat here that some cabbies even swear at ministers’ mother for bringing up a cocky leader before.
That was(is) understable, otherwise how does one explain rebel, mutiny, revolution, uprising and internal conflicts?
These were common throughout the Human History, the only Wisdom man must learn is try not to be hated when living till the day one dies.
Quite simple to attain yet seem so difficult for some leaders!
What a shame!

Just humour;
Sure, someone’s gonna get prosecuted for loving too much and for expressing his love in public.
We, the public love him, but the one he loves is going to do him in.
let’s put it in a more blunt way..
Singaporeans are at their limits and someone finally showing it out..
hope the government don’t look as this incident as a case by case basis but as a whole..
someone is telling the government that the people can’t take it already..
Some of the comments here have been shockingly inhumane. The act of deliberately setting someone else on fire simply cannot be justified, no matter how grevious a wrong one has suffered. To approve of such acts and to write them off as ‘retribution to the person who has done something wrong while performing his duties’ (as one commentor has so kindly put it, above) will promulgate violence and revenge taking – is this the kind of society we want? It is almost equivalent to saying that a beggar, driven to desperation, is entitled to set on fire any passer-by who refuses to donate a sum of money to him.
To address some of the concerns here: Should the old man be proven to be insane, he will not be sent to jail. Instead, he will be detained in a mental institution according to the Criminal Procedure Code. This is for the benefit of both the accused and society. The law agrees that it is useless to punish a person who is insane. At the same time, the public will be put at risk should such a person be set free. Therefore, the law provides for the accused to be treated in a mental institution, and released when he is certified as ‘cured’.
Look, there are many other matters to pick on for the purposes of government-bashing. Cases such as this should be left out of the picture. For all the complaints you guys have about the PAP, I certainly have not seen the PAP make any comments as inhumane as some of the comments I have seen on this page.
you think some people hv prolems understanding the principles of war as in, violent begets violent(911)? similarly,in law, an eye for an eye, a life for a life. you hurt someone physically, the law will hurt you back.
if you hurt someone’s livelihood, do you expect the person not to “hoot” you?
why, you expect all people to behave like civilize saints?
maybe america shouldn’t strike back after 911 you think? hamas and israel too should react peacefully to injustices?
what does the law says? only the rich can strike the poor?
we take pride in the rule of law don’t we?
What crap is Liew Tuck yew talking about ?When trhe PAP talk rubbish , its allokbut when we common folks said the same we are bunch of clowns. Seng Han Tong is a first class hyprocrite and deserve more burns than what he has got ! Truly utterly desreve it!!!!!
I challenge each and every one of you who have alleged Seng Han Thong to be a ‘first class hypocrite’ and whatnot to give us evidence that would prove it.
Get some perspective, people. He was SET ON FIRE. Leave the PAP out of this. No one ever deserves to have something like that happen to him, no matter what (perceived) injustice he has committed.
I am ashamed to be called Singaporean. You know what we need to be worrying about, instead of a government that ‘talks rubbish’? The state of our society. It started with the pathetic state of our manners. It’s progressing to our sense of empathy for other human beings – something clearly demonstrated in this forum. I am disgusted with the way Singaporean society is right now.
If you have a problem with the PAP – take it elsewhere. Like someone said earlier on, there is a time and place for everything.
Please, Singapore. Cultivate the proper sense of self-worth.
comments #62 : MP drives Merc, anything wrong? Stop being so “narrow minded”. Maybe you want to list down what type of people should drive what car!
Whenever problem arise, some people will first shoot PAP even sometimes its UNLINK. This is Sterotype. No matter what, resorting to violence is wrong! Maybe if you are so displeased with the system in this country, I would suggest you look around to chose the right country you want to live in! GO THERE & live peacefully. Blessed!
i think mr seng is badly injuried.
at first i sympathy with the attacker.
but now i feel that nobody should suffer such injustice by being burnt.
hope that mr seng will get well soon and be healthy again.
i feel sorry to sympathy with the attacker.
According to older folks, this MP was one hell of a sycophant.
You could read his CV on the parliament website – no way he could have become an MP if not for all that apple polishing.
Pity, that the old taxi uncle didn’t do his fire starting drills correctly and rid Singapore of one more sycophantic leech who sucks the lifeblood out of normal Singaporeans.
