@Hohapata Tariana Hoi Hoi (#11) What you said is soooo wise! GET OUT and explore the rest of the world. Work does not need to be confined to your own country.

But wait...that means I need some kind of fantastic qualification, no? A domestic helper in Canada (they call them "maids" here!) alone needs minimum GCE "A" levels.

Four years ago and when I was 64 I had a great tan from working in the sun in Indochina. I was growing sugar cane on my friend's land.

Then I wore that hugging tee shirt to show off my chest, biceps and the other curves of my body.

I went to a Ah Beng landscape company that advertised for workers and he hired me but on terms that was better than his many foreign workers.

I worked and I was OK but I put in my all as I had to work just as hard as the young and determined foreign workers.

.I am now 68 and can I still do it? I mean now older and a little weaker.

Swee Swee talk about retraining but how about the older workers. There are ranges of older workers. If you hit 40 plus then who wants you except for the low paying menial jobs. If you are over fifty lagi terok - very hard to find a job. If you hit 60 then they say you are about to go to boot hill or going to kick the bucket. Uncle and auntie you better take a rest. I will contact you.

Singapore is a fast aging country and the government is not doing anything to help the really old folks to get jobs. What have they done? Give them wash toilet jobs and so all the toilet washers are the oldest old folks of Singapore. Disgrace to the party and how disgusting.

So, I got out of Singapore. Roam the world and you might find something. I did that and went by land-bus, train riverboat up to the China-Pakistani border and ended in Indochina. Still looking for any new frontier. Next-South Pacific as it is the last Paradise on earth.

Get out - go anywhere- young and old Singaporeans. Like the days of the Wild West - Go West uoung man.

Is it only the employees' fault they are not getting jobs they need or want?

Employers need to boost their confidence in their future profits, and they need to boost their confidence in hiring inexperienced as well as older experienced workers. Cos no matter how much skills-upgrading a person is willing to get, no one will be employed if employers are unwilling to take risks.

Buck up property agencies (and other companies) - are you employing ppl based only on age and looks?

HE sound as though he is getting retrenched soon... to up-skill and re-skill to take on new and different jobs in different industries.

but then again he said " We need them to believe in themselves..."

Guess who are the "them" and who are the "WE"?

Dear NMP's, Ministers and Reporters reading this.........

I URGE you to do the following to CONTRIBUTE in 4 LITTLE STEPS.

1) List all these companies that are hiring - I am sure you know BEST.... meaning these companies will hire you based on the NEW CERT you got from retraining

2) The GOVT pays for these advertisments to ENCOURAGE companies to advertise.

3) List the PAY SCALE - to enable people to decide if they can SUPPORT their family

4) What CERTIFICATION these companies are they looking for - so people know SPOT on, without WASTING precious time

i think he is fantastic. he is a natural comedian and i totally admire him for having the tough and unenviable job of cheering singapore up. once the economy picks up, he should create a new portfolio. minister of laughter and jokes. no extra pay, because he is already performing that role as labour chief now.

How can we expect a man who can't even take care of his own grooming, especially combing his hair, and be presentable, to even take care of us?

This is one man who is only good in putting Old Wine in new bottle, which looks presentable but tastes as bad as before.

Full of hot airs but no bites!

I URGE companies to be kind , happy and merry and sing song with their employees.

I URGE everyone to feel motivated, excited for the challenging times ahead.

I URGE all to forget the BAD times and Remember only the GOOD times.

I URGE all to think that this is actually a Blessing in Disguise.

I URGE all to join me in unity as we hold each others' hands and brave the stormy weather.

I URGE all to rest assured, IF i can help you, I will.

I URGE all to spend on the economy so that you may find new job as in business pick up you may get job IF business picks up.

I URGE all to study and study and more study until the sun comes up with job offerings IF there are new jobs created and IF the resume fits and IF can employers choose you over foreigners.

I URGE all to feel good and not feel bad.

I URGE and URGE until i can urge no more.

give me a U , U!
give me a R , R!
give me a G , G!
give me a E , E!

lets urge on and on until forever mon. hee hee.

be positive and maybe things maybe may just may turn out positive.

Minister can swee swee say but the reality is, due to the mismangement of the economy, the government has practically guaranteed that retraining will not work, since there is no new jobs due to the fall in investment and the old jobs are snatched away by foreigners.

Bruce Springsteen once says: " if you trust what these leaders are saying, then you are an idiot." Based on these, singaporeans are idiots all along to trust the government, just like what Li Ao said.

Remember, the government is not in the business of taking good care of you, they are only interested in taking good care of themselves.
