Excerpts from Today, “Chiam’s still standing”:
IF POLITICS could be likened to a game of chess, this grand old man of Opposition politics readily concedes that he is still a novice at disguising his next moves.
Which is why Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong, 73, is making extra efforts to conceal the details of what he hopes would be a fitting finale to his eventful political career — even as he declared that he already has a team in place to contest for a Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the next General Election, due by February 2012.
During a 90-minute chat over coffee at the Botanic Gardens with Weekend Xtra recently, Mr Chiam gave precious little information away, albeit with constant reminders from his wife Lina.
Said Mr Chiam: “I’ve learnt my lesson in the 1979 by-election. I was afraid of a three-cornered fight so I made the announcement that I was going to contest in Potong Pasir. And you know who they put there? Howe Yoon Chong (the late former minister), the strongest candidate they had.”
“I already have a team. We have one doctor, one accountant, two lawyers,” he continued before Mrs Chiam interjected: “We cannot reveal everything.”

I think why Chiam picked Lawyers, doctors and accountants was because these profesionals are likely to be self-employed. If you are employed, good chance that the fear factor or the govt will drive yr employer to find an excuse to fire you or to make yr life difficult. If you are in self-employable professions, there is no fear. Ok, maybe you have to jaga yr belakang as far as taxes and licences and the law are concerned. Other than that, hard to find yr Achilles heel.
Gd on You, Mr Chiam. At least you are far better off the the scoundrel PM Lee and his party.
Wishing A Gd Health In Yrs To Come.
Mr Chiam,
Please contest at Sembawang. I hate that guy who wants to dump old S’poreans in another country!!.
Elfred,
So, who do you suggest Mr Chiam fields for his ward? Taxi drivers, hawkers??? I have nothing against these professions, but S’poreans still prefers leaders to be more educated and/or coming from certain professions.
Any man who stands determined to have the interests of the citizens at heart, my vote goes to him. Any man who takes sane actions and is willing to put aside financial superiority to help the poor, my vote goes to him.
“I already have a team. We have one doctor, one accountant, two lawyers,”
Clap, clap, clap,
I wish Mr Chiam good health coming years to come.
And be ready to contest next General Election.
you may not have straight As, not attended oxford or cambridge nor the ivy league.
you do not speak queen’s english but you have no peers in that:
you do not get thousands of dollars a day in salary
but you are real, not in it for money or for your own future in biz or legal practice you have the heart of gold, truthfulness in yourself and now you have the greatest mission in your human life – to win a GRC in the coming this year’s GE.
you cannot do it on your own – but in spirit
all of our prayers are with you and can envisaged your victory on GE/ VE day
God bless you and your team to VICTORY – you are deserving to represent the people – you have earned the people’s respects unlike all the ram it down the throat walkovers
When you got a stroke, the local media is so eager to publish your negative news on you stating you are old & ill health, etc. But MM Lee’s wife got a stroke almost the same time as you & thus the local media mellow down quite a bit.
S’pore govt loves to use Malaysia Opposition Parties as a living examples (Eg: Anwar, Elizabeth Wong), even as headline news indirectly claiming Opposition as no credibility.
But nevertheless, it’s gd to have more Opposition Party in S’pore Parliament. This country has enough of nonsense from this present govt.
Hi Ronin,
Can somebody please enlighten us who was Lim Chin Xiong and who was Rajaretnam?
And can somebody tell me what school Mr Ong Ah Seng went to, or even… what company he was in when he got elected? And can somebody tell me who are the bloggers who got voted in that made a splash spilling over to Singapore?
Hahahahahahahaha…
No no no… Alright, lemme be clear-cut here.
A leader has what leaders. But if Chiam cannot excel in political HRM, he can’t be a leader when there is already one in PAP. You got what I mean? So what he fields a taxi driver? If the taxi driver can govern, can win the support of fellow taxi drivers and passengers, why not?
The problem about Chiam is, after his typical good catch, he’s still dreaming about focusing on lawyers, accountants and trash… If that’s the case, his competitor who came with a shark fin or duck leg would have won him.
It doesn’t matter if anyone agrees with me or not. But for the case of Singapore, if you ain’t able to govern, you’re out especially in this era. Look… Who voted for MM Lee because he worked for the Japanese? Who voted for the PM because he was from MAS? Who voted out a minister in a past in favor of a non-minister?
Chiam doesn’t seem to get it… if he cannot get his political idea in HRM right, even this tide blows PAP out, SPP won’t stand any longer than Chen Shui Bian.
What do the people really want? Lawyers? Accountants? Doctors?
You don’t need to field anyone other than a retiree like Tan Kin Lian to rouse 1000 people packed into a small park. Hahahahahahahahahah…
Just watch on, Ronin.
As such, Chiam or SPP really poses little threat. Hahahahahahahahaha…
A party who can’t even handle political HRM straight has no future. Even in history, it spells out well. Hahahahahahahahaha…
It’s a pretty interesting show, just make it worthwhile.
hi, i don’t know anyrhing about politic but 1 thing for sure lky has done a great job in singapore and guys out there stop criticising him,…. anyway i also will vote for chiam…lol!!!
