According to investment bank Credit Suisse, Singapore’s population grew 18%, to about 4.8 million, from 2004 to 2008. More than three-quarters of that growth, Credit Suisse estimates, came from newly arrived foreigners taking lucrative positions at expanding private banks, oil-exploration firms and shipping companies. Foreigners filled 61% of the 796,000 jobs created in Singapore during that four-year period.

For a long time, i had the wrong understanding of the term “Singapore’s population” . Thank goodness now i know it actually means citizens and all foreigners like PR inside this tiny dot. Hope my understooding is correct.
Everywhere in the dot i go, i see foreigners. If i am an employer, i would like foreigner workers. i suppose all citizen employers are thankful for the influx of foreign nationalities ?
I am not surprised by the foreigners occupying 61% of jobs created in the dot.
That means, for every 10 jobs, 6.1 of payroll goes to them. They also remit much money out of the dot, if i am not wrong.
even in this crisis where retrenchments a many, i still see many of them going for job fairs. The porridge is getting good competition. :) Even perenial unemployed citizens tried to apply for jobs at job fairs increasing the number of job seeker number. Good luck to fresh grads. I think poly batches coming out in June/July/Aug periods?
i simply love this ft policy. its actually good if you are an employer. If you are employee, they say also good wor. can u believe it! Delphi retrenchment the news showed the aunty smiling with retrenchment package.
excellent.
how to survive ar, 61% foreigner. Sigh, plight of the average singaporean. elections coming is it? will voting new party help?
Think this situation is unavoidable as our nation has adopted an “open door” economic policy.
IMO, I believe our govt must have anticipated the associated problems arising out of this, e.g. locals competing with FTs for diminishing jobs etc, but don’t think they are doing enough to arrest it. In trying times like this, extraordinary measures must be carried out to protect your own citizens, or else how are we able to trust them to govern us if another crisis occurs ?
can help do this survey? its about employment. i thought i wanna find out the results. results will be found on my blog.www.alexlew.co.nr

High population growth pushes property prices and govt owns most of the land here.
Then these FT pushes the native salaries downwards making us easier to control by the govt.
We then have to slog harder and be more docile else we risk losing our jobs and cannot afford to pay for our flats.
Very perverted right?

and that’s when the woman have to work as maid overseas…and that’s because we didn’t bring in enough alternative voices
agree with #6 . can our govt do somethings? Nowadays its China ppl are store owners at kopitiam and us Singaporean are store assistant. Scary right???
can our govt do somethings? they can, but the better question is will they? and i guess it is a big NO. I went pass a noodle shop and guess what, the staff inside are all from china, i didn’t see a single local…but i guess most of you have notice it too

My sentiments too. Will the govt do anything? Nah! It’s easier to threatened those insecure about loosing the roof over their heads. Makes it easier for the dominate PAP party to continue with their sticks-and-carrots politics, and laugh to the bank with their $millions.
Agree with you #8, our government will not do anything. In fact, this is exactly what they want, more economic units to help keep costs down. LKY and his PAP have for a long time held us “mere mortal Singaporeans” in contempt. They only look upon us as economic units in a very large production line. It matters not to them whether the economic units are Singaporeans or foreigners. All that is of utmost importance is how much “production” each economic unit is able to contribute to Singapore Inc.
Unless we “mere mortal Singaporeans” learn to unite against LKY and his merry bunch of elites, we can expect nothing much from this government in the way of privileges that most citizens of other countries can expect from their elected governments. This government here will throw to us the bear minimum that they can get away with while reminding us to be grateful that they even gave that minimum to us in the first place.
The late CV Devan Nair once mentioned that he was afraid that Singapore would go beyond the point of no return. I am begining to feel that we have.
Our govt should do something for us. At my workplace, there is only 3 singaporeans out of 8 engineers. The 5 jobs which went to foreigners could actually be given to our own fresh graduates from uni or polys. Clearly, this group of foreigners, mostly on employment pass or S-pass are taking away singaporean jobs. How many singaporeans report to a foreigner turned PR boss who is bias and hire an employee from his hometown and groom him, but not the singaporean?
My dear PAP government, its time to reinforce stricter laws for foreign labour.
1. firstly, the fees for foreign labours could be increased.
2. secondly, give benefits only to singapore citizens, not PRs or foreigners. Job Credit scheme should only be given to those holding the pink ic.
3. thirdly, to give singaporeans more opportunities, those on EP & S-pass who are not from prestigious universities should be given the title such as “assistant engineer” and not “engineer”.
4. fourthly, if the money that the govt can save by not giving PRs anything could be used to improve the incentives that the govt give for promoting singaporean babies, there will be more singaporean couples who will be more willing to give birth and this can increase our birth rate, then we can have lesser forigners.
5. Last but not least, if singaporeans can have a less stressful lifestyle; stress from competing for jobs with foreigners and to take up part time degree or higher degree so as to secure a senior position; there will be more leisure time to go out with friends with the opposite gender and this will help to promote marriage and a higher birth rate!
I wish my workplace can have 90% singaporeans, including a singaporean boss!!

Sadly, it is easier said then done. Most people will only submit to their “fate” and slog away, contributing to Singapore Inc and when the time comes when they are in need, Singapore Inc will turn their back on them.
I don’t expect any privilege from MIW, however i hope that they will stop wringing poor Singaporeans, paying themselves extraordinary pay and justifying it with their “qualification” and in times of crisis failing to prove themselves and brushing it off as unforeseen. if they are not extraordinary enough to see the unforeseen, then please do not take take the extraordinary pay.
Furthermore, there are people out there who are still so fervently supporting MIW and neglecting the fact that is right in front of their eyes, how to change it.
Charles Darwin says that “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” Our dear MIW is “intelligent” and strong, but they are not responsive to change, so thus survival rate is … evolution didn’t happen instantly, it will take time before their extinction.
61% is not surprising.
As an IT worker, I ever worked in a large well known MNC where its IT department consists of over 100 people in 1 large office and I am the minority, so much so that i actually believe i was living in ………… and not in sg.
many years ago, I already felt that there are more foreigners occupying sg created jobs than citizens. To clarify, PR is not citizen and I classify them as foreigners. i am not saying we don’t need them either. Its the proportion that i am concerned about. If you look around, most countries have seen less foreign workers already. I wonder why that is the case ;) In sg, I not sure.
Its actually quite sad being a citizen learning about this kind of news.
I went to an interview recently and the ang mor tell me singapore IT people not good. He prefer Indians and Europeans and Aussies. He purposely insult me by digging his nose 2 times in a exaggerated way and then shake my hand.
But somehow, he interviewed me, for reason I cannot explain. I have not heard from him since. See the irony? He interview me and then tells me Singapore IT people are not good.

“how to survive ar, 61% foreigner. Sigh, plight of the average singaporean. elections coming is it? will voting new party help?”

You lead to counter ask :
Will not voting for more alternative voice help?
Let us migrate!!!!!!!
Well the statstics are shocking!
Also once here the expats refuse to go home – real case of an ang mo retrenched but still manages to get a job managing a condo and happy to change toilet rolls.
No wonder no luck for me after retrenchment in 2004 – the ang mos are doing toilet jobs to stay and our employers are favouring them – the pinkleton effect becoming a nation’s stigma. Heard that another untrained british ang mo coming back from australia to work here as writer! Singaporean bosses like ang mo ! New CEO of Temasek and DBS and OCBE and NOL etc are all ang mos!
The FT concept was screwed from the initial idea abt FT CEOs, now we hv thousands of low skilled workers fighting for low wages with locals. NS/reservist for locals, jobs/scholarships/varsity places for FTs. I wonder who votes the government into office, locals or foreigners? A foreign worker can live on $1000 pay, a local simply cannot even feed himself with that pay, don’t even talk abt having 2 kids or 3 if you can. This has got to be a sick joke. Why do we have this low population problem in the first place? Social engineering by you know who, now it is still continuing with this FT policy. We will know the social effects of having too many foreigners in our country in another 10 yrs time. It will be too late to reverse by then.
Damage control by Straits Times. Check it out!
Talking about FT, I’ll share a 1st hand experience here. I work at one gov research institute (most are PhD & MSc holders) here and typically, there are >80% FT (>90% PRC, <10% others) meaning only 80% FT & most on free scholarship). If we dont keep up, we r going to do the road sweeping & garbage keeping for our FTs.
“A young man, from a comfortable family does not like studying.
He spent minimal effort in his poly days and always got a B- grade.
After his NS, he joined the workforce. Then did he realise that paper qualification is more important than capability. Therefore, he applied for NUS and NUT. Both universities turned him down because he does not has a merit cert from his poly. He apply to NSW Australia. He graduated with a first class honor in Engineering. He stays on in Australia after he was conferred. I asked him why he did not want to come home.
He told me, he was rejected by his own country and it was Australia who gave him a chance. Why should he return?”
I once worked in an MNC in Tuas where everybody at manager level and above, including almost all HR staff were foreigners and P.Rs. There was one Singaporean at manager level there for a while but he got pushed out or something.
It was easy for them, they bring there own people in, after a few months, these foreigners get their P.R, then they employ more foreigners, who again get P.R and the cycle keeps going on and on. As far as Singapore is concerned, if you are a P.R, you are counted as a Singaporean not a foreigner.
The Singaporeans working there who are mainly lower ranked are scared stiff of losing their jobs or getting marked by these so called ” P.R singaporeans ” , so they shut up and slog on, generally doing jobs where they are easily arrowed.
Interestingly, the real Singaporeans (Singapore Citizens) will mumble among themselves when they are together but do nothing else, what else can they do? Talk , get marked , then it is all the way down the drain into the sump pit.
But what really gets me is some PRs who work here but at the same time belittle Singapore. There are a lot of them who despise Singapore, one reason for the despisal could be because we call them ” FOREIGN TALENT ”. Are we telling them that us ” National Service and Reservist serving ” Singaporeans don’t have what it takes and therefore need TALENTED FOREIGNERS to lead us”.
I don”t think much will change in Singapore any time soon. Maybe Singaporeans could learn from them. Why don”t we become ” Foreign Talent ” too and go to some other country and work? I am seriously thinking about it. Any views on this?
Do many countries see Singaporeans as talented. Would like to here from someone who has been around.
