Her name is Zhang Xiaoou. She is one of the top students in NUS Faculty of Science majoring in Quantitative Finance(QF) who serve her fellow students and community with love and passion. However, on 4th March, 2009, her life took a fatal turn. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), a life-threatening disease that will post a staggering SGD 400,000 medical bill to her middle-income family (Xiaoou’s mother is unemployed. Her father is a normal worker with average income of RMB 2000 <SGD 400> per month).

The Online Citizen visited Ms Zhang today at the National University Hospital and her school mates at the National University of Singapore.

Now I know middle-income is not the same thing as middle-class.
Since her father’s salary is in RMB, is she from China?
If so, perhaps it will be less of a financial strain on her family if she returned to China for treatment.
Health Insurance is very very important especially in SINGAPORE (not a welfare State)…its affordable…would urge everyone to get one.

Doesn’t China has a fully subsidised healthcare? She should go back home for free treatment since she can’t afford the S$400,000 bill.

LIFE is ….. Uncertainty – no one really knows what is happening to the economy in a absolute way. Economy goes up and down and catches all by surprise even for the greenman who spans the globe carrying an alan key.
What I am alluding is this : we would never know when misfortune will strike us like illness or financial woes. As a society, the able should lend a helping hand to encourage and culture a compassionate society so that when its our turn to need help , help will pay forward to us.
