I can't agree with CNA (if you mean the drivel they produce on TV) it tastes like babyfood compared to a truly free press in the West. CNA's textual counterpart Todayonline.com does come across as credible in parts though. Between the critical pieces of todayonline and ST, I'd go for todayonline anytime.

To Post # 17,
ST is ST - it is the part of the orchestra set up to control the news and try to influence heart and mind.
Try CNA - it has good on the spot reporting of news, and as it has to reach out to the rest of Asia, it has to show some professionalism and impartiality.

Let's face it Straits Times is joke and an embarrassment! ST journalists who have gotten so fat from the milk of government patronage and scholarships that they cannot but spout puerile observations handfed, no doubt, by government press releases. Investigative journalism and professional integrity has long since died in ST and It cannot be taken seriously by anyone with a critical mind anymore. May it die the death of the tabloid press - in the gutter where it belongs.

"singaporeans will get most IR jobs"

How to prove beyond any reasonable doubt? this is a technical question out of curiosity.

'Singaporeans' : does it mean citizens only? How about PRs?

'most' : can 51% mean most? if there are 3 types of employees - citizens , pr , foreigners. Can this mean 40% : 30% : 30% where 40% is the 'most' ?

technically, tell me yes or no.
The quantum or quantity is of the essence.

How much different could it be between foreigners taking the IR jobs, and Singapore permanent residents & new citizens taking the jobs?

It makes a lot of difference to Singaporeans who have all these while been loyal citizens, and NOT getting the jobs.

Jobs like cashiers in supermarkets could easily go to Singapore housewives who wish to supplement their families' income................ but instead went to foreigners who can't even say the amount ito be paid in proper English!

I agree fully. I notice the MRT is still as packed in the rush hours.
People rushing to their office.

This means the recession has not hit the majority although many are hit. Myself included being well qualified but headcounts have been frozen and continue to be so. Once you are out, tough to get back in.

Servants = to serve the masters

Public servants = to serve singaporeans

Unfortunately, now the servants have climbed over the masters' head.

All the masters should know what to do to the servants.

the only way to unplug pap's ears is to vote them out.

year after year they continue to get the mandate.
surely they will believe that the people approve of their actions, no?

"Seriously, the government should reduce the amount of FTs here in Singapore."

Seriously, no one will take you seriously in their own comfortable position unless his own job is at stake. get the drift ?

in this economic downturn, people who used to be comfortable and are getting affected now will probably understand better through their own real life experiences and have plenty of free time to think better.

Seriously, the government should reduce the amount of FTs here in Singapore. They're taking away the jobs of local who have to live their lifes here, pay their bills, pay the taxes etc etc. Even Austrialia is reducing the amount of foreign workers that are given work permit to work there.

ST is obviously activated when Singapore is caught by reports coming from the Philippines claiming that some 5000 jobs have been secured for their country folks. Well there must be some truth in it - also perceptively the guys and girls from the Philippines are reputed to make good in the service industries as well as to be able to sing and dance on the impromtu.
ST perhaps tried to limit the fallout - maybe under instructions but could find no facts - so it try to shaft it down and hope that citizens readers will just skimmed thru news reports and feel good. Yes more than a spin job - and dangerous in that it is causing lies upon lies with misleading perceptions. Talk about values nowadays. The ST for what they are with so many journalists from top universities will alway falter when they have no minds of their own, and they alway think they can get away with citizens....reading what they write in succession of words and meaning changes with no apology or references; sad thing is the establishment seem to think that citizens are born yesterday.

The competition is set - MM had said to the effect, that new or old, citizens will be equal, so very soon many more will apply for PR, then Citizenship.
Well, Singaporeans - you will have to take up the challenge and may the best men and women get the jobs at the IRs ....expect no favours as the die is cast, and as always since Singaporeans cannot be "DBS" (Don't Be Singaporeans).- a cynical reference to jobs at DBS Bank going to many foreigners.
Good luck

I felt nervous reading Straits Times. Not just what was planned to be written but their fickleness in trying to change words best suited to protect PAP image. Sick! 154th ranking may not sustain for long...expect the rating and ranking to touch bottom.

For the sake of Singaporean, let's boycott Sentosa IR if bulk of our jobs go to foreigners. Why must Singaporean forgo our tranquil sentosa for the sake of giving job to foreigners? Is our sentosa being conquered without a single army to defend it?
