People take part in it , i suspect, because of the advertisement and its kinda like fun or cool. But after the event, people continue their routines.

Its much like valentines day and x'mas and chinese new year.

Its occasional thingie. people are not serious enough really, to really do it on a daily basis. excuses are plenty: busy. no time. cannot lah. bo eng. forgot.

humans are humans and will never change.

Earth hour is not about saving the earth or world. It's about saving ourselves - the human race.

Hence the marketing hype and drive is all inaccurate. Earth is here to stay for another couple billions of years; we are not. Earth has the ability to renew itself as it has done so since the Ice Age and before.

So it should be renamed as the Human Race Hour.

That makes more sense.

Why isn't a boycott of Starbucks realistic? Boycott lah!

But we all need our lifestyle, don't we?

Earth Hour is utter BS. Gahmen worldwide should lead the way. But no, can only pay lip service, otherwise oil-producing countries will be unhappy and jack up prices again.

How about subsidising LED lighting (much lower consumption than even flourescent tubes), subsidising pubic tpt, tax breaks for cycle-friendly businesses (showers and lockers for cycling employees)? How about bike lanes?

How about we just accept that Earth Hour is unlikely to change much? It's just another greenie fad. I'd be happy if REAL CHANGE occurs, but nah, just to make people feel good about themselves. After all, we need distractions every now and then.
