David Widjaja’s autopsy report released, results not disclosed
LATEST UPDATE (as of 8th April at 5.40pm): TOC spoke to Indonesian Embassy officer Yayan Mulyana today. The article has been edited to reflect the latest information available.

With additonal reporting by Deborah Choo and Darren Boon.
THE file on David Widjaja’s case remains wide open.
While the autopsy report on his death has finally been released, the details of the alleged stabbing incident remains sketchy.
The family received the autopsy report on 4th April (Saturday) from Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
The report has been sent to a team of doctors in Jakarta for analysis, says William Widjaja — who is David’s brother – in a TOC interview on 6th April.
They did so because they could not understand the medical terms used in the document, he claimed. William also declined a request to send a copy of the report to TOC, saying “it’s better to leave it to the professionals.”
Nevertheless, a press conference will be held once the results are known. This was deemed necessary by the family as many Indonesians are clamouring to know what has happened.
“They all want justice for David,” he said.
William’s family is still grieving over David’s death (for background information on the stabbing incident, click here). Despite the completion of investigations by the Singapore Police Force (SPF), William is disappointed over the way the they have handled the case.
He is puzzled over why the police needs one month to come up with the report. According to him, an autopsy report in Indonesia usually takes about two days to complete. Furthermore, it was David’s family that took the initiative to ask the SPF for the report.
They called the Indonesian embassy on 2nd April and asked for their help in checking with the SPF about the status of the investigations. The SPF replied by saying that they will send the autopsy report to NTU, which will then pass one copy to David’s family.
According to Yayan Mulyana, an Indonesian Embassy official, the family had earlier entrusted the university to send them the report. The embassy has never at any time possessed the document.
He also added that the embassy has kept regular contact with the police, who has informed them that investigations are still ongoing and “making progress.”
TOC understands that the university has not seen the contents of the report, as they were merely responsible to act as an intermediary.
So far, the SPF has declined to answer TOC’s enquiries.
A Coroner’s Inquiry will be held and David’s family will be present, although an exact date has not been set.
Until then, it appears that details regarding the “stabbing” incident will remain muddled.
The family earlier claimed they were told by police officer Soh CheeEng that no injury were found on David’s wrists, but police spokesperson Liu Xiang Ling denied this in a New Paper report yesterday.
The New Paper also said that the autopsy report did mention slits on David’s wrists, with one wound deeper than the other. The source of this claim, however, is not mentioned.
While calm throughout most of the interview, William started sounding upset when he expressed displeasure at the way the Singapore media has handled the coverage.
He went into a tirade over how he felt the mainstream media jumped to the conclusion that David was the aggressor.
“It’s very, very unfair,” he said before finally cooling down.

The autopsy report should have been released directly to the family.
Imagine a similar incident happening to a Singaporean, and the report was released to his employer instead. What if they refuse to pass it on to the family?
Preposterous.
yeah should give report to next of kin.
this is a little respect.
Two more unanswered questions.
(1) Did David’s family get every page of SPF’s autopsy report or NTU might have kept a page or two?
(2) Did anyone from David’s family checked whether the report they received are exactly the same as NTU’s – no additional or missing words?
But Jakarta Post said the family got a report via email. Why so much of confusion, why can’t SPF come out and clearly say what happened like they do in Crime Watch…..
Perhaps…..they don’t want to stuff it up and get into a mess…..so much for confidence and responsibility.hahaha…
if it was a complete investigation with no stone’s unturned…i thnk they should not be worried to come forth….and have a simple press meet and say it….
Why the autopsy report is first given to NTU? Very strange !!
This report should only be released to the family and should remain confidential.
Let’s say a person died in a building, does it mean SPF should first give the autopsy report to the building owner??
Looking at the ’super efficiency’ of SPF, why does it take 1 month to complete the autopsy? This is a potentially ‘murder case’ !!! Where’s the transparency? Really looks like an ‘X-file’.
yes, even as I was interviewing William, this was one of the first questions that popped up in my mind: why give it to ntu?
But in this case I think there is a special exception as one of NTU’s staff is involved in the incident. Perhaps it’s not just an autopsy report, but also a determination of the seriies of events that happened?
Therefore it might not be so strange for NTU to receive the report after all. Nevertheless, I still can’t figure out why the SPF did not send the report to the family directly.
In any case, TOC will be attempting to speak to the SPF and NTU this week. Stay tuned for more info.
Don’t we smack of a regime that is forever fearful of telling the truth when it has vested interest involved.
A completely ludricrous situation for the police to hand the report to NTU for transmission to the family. IT’S AS OBVIOUS AS YOUR OWN FOUR FINGERS AND A THUMB THAT THE NTU HAS A VESTED INTEREST IN WHAT IS IN THE REPORT.
OUR POLICE, A PROFESSIONAL LOT? MORE LIKE A GROUP ACTING HAND IN GLOVE WITH THE NTU, NO DOUBT AT THE BEHEST OF THE GOVT.
WHAT A SHAME. I HOPE THE INDONESIAN GOVT WOULD INTERVENE ON BEHALF OF ITS CITIZEN – NOW, THAT WOULD BE SHOWING THE GOVT HERE TO STAND UP FOR YOUR OWN PEOPLE WHICH IS TOO OFTEN ABSENT.
The chain of events is strange and confounding to say the least…
Why should NTU get the autopsy report first?
Shouldn’t it be to the family first with a copy cced to NTU as a formality?
In singapore, corporation and instituition interest is priority. If they want and need to know anything relating to the case, they will be given the privilege to do so. Thats alwalys the policies of our society.
Though not an Indonesian, I feel sad and angry too to the ways this issue is being “played” around by authority and media. Irresponsible news w/o proper evidence and w/o considering the impact to the victim family. Slow and incompetent HOME team which takes a month to come out with the report… and personally i feel that there seem to be some cover-ups by the NTU in this issues.
The puzzling thing is what is written in the autopsy report? I think the victim in the stabbing case, the professor should come out n gave an explaination what
happened in the stabbing case so that David’s family can get over with.
If you guys read today’s New Paper, the autopsy report does include cuts on the deceased’s wrists. Also, there have been some errors from the Indonesian media, perhaps trying to play up the case. The police spokesperson has also denied that t there was even a mention that there were no injuries to the wrists of the deceased.
Understand that many of us have lost faith with the local mainstream media. But versus the sensationalism of some Indonesian news media, well, what would your stand be?
Honestly, I think one very good episode about this case is there are too much wild speculation going on like wildfire. It’s best to remain less emotional and suspicious, always on a look out to catch a cat.
As for myself, while registering the biasness of our local media, frankly I think this news have been blow out of proportion.

Sorry, forgot to add great post! Can’t wait to see your next post!
Where the hell is the professor????he is the only living link to this case for god sake…why isn’t there any news about him anymore?????????
I can’t help to wonder….What if the respective nationalities of David and the professor is the other way around (i.e the professor is Indonesian and David is Singaporean) THEN WOULD IT BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY??????
@ shinici
i don’t know bro……in Indonesia, most of homicide case, even if a foreign people as a victim…..the police dept. may come up with something. most of the time they able to captured the criminal.
i heard that a japanesse murdered in a hotel room. how’s the case going? did SPF managed to jailed the criminal?
“The chain of events is strange and confounding to say the least…”
Singapore’s events are always strange, just like Mas Selamat. Anything that disgrace the establishment will end up “NO COMMENT”
This incident reflects utterly poor local police professionalism – dont need to scratch the bottom, simply look at the whole episode of the handling of Singapore’s most dangerous wanted man, Mas Selamat’s escape.
And the police is under which Ministry’s responsibility? No wonder people said, they had flown thousands of kites.
Do Singapore has anything to HIDE?
Ball is on your court SPF.
The world is watching and the truth must be made known to all otherwise Singapore may also suffer the same effects of the Malaysain “mongolian model murder” mystery .
The earlier the David Widjaja case is resolved openly the better it is for Singapore’s international reputation.
Why should the family get the report from NTU and not directly from SPF? What if NTU secretly make changes to the report?
SPF and our govt have handled this case very badly. It reminds me of the murder of the Mongoliann woman in M’sia.
fair should be the way.
Where r the two highly paid elites, the Ho pinky and Wong kasan. There got good news they appeared when there got bad news they disappeared.
david,
the whole world is not watching. Only toc because it is desperate to get an expose after sleeping on the wheel over cdc bonuses and allan ooi suicide
If you are family member, my condolences
WanBaonisation of TOC is happening.
Why are we speculating on a poor guy’s death? I’m a fan of TOC but I don’t support all these tabloid stories. A man has died. His family is in pain and sorrow. Writing conspiracy stories on alleged cover ups without any proof will only prolong the pain and suffering of the family. If you really care about the family help them directly to overcome their pain.
The main stream media sensationalised the unfortunate incident by playing the dead man as the aggressor. TOC is now doing the opposite, sensationalising the story by playing the authorities as the aggressor.
Poor taste. I expected better from TOC editors.
Hi Hello,
I thank you for your feedback on this article. As a citizen journalist, I share your concern about the coverage of events regarding the David Widjaja incident. And like you, I strive for objectivity and balance in the coverage of the saga.
However, I would like to address several pertinant issues which you’ve raised:
1) Speculation on David Widjaja’s death
At TOC, we have strived to achieve balance in our coverage. Nowhere on the website have we endorsed any particular “conspiracy theory” as truth. We do take issue with the mainstream media’s coverage, which has found to be of uneven quality and sometimes biased. This news report is an objective account about the release of the autopsy report, nothing more.
2) Sensationalising
We understand your concern that David’s death has been sensationalised. At TOC, we strive not to practice that. This article did not claim David was the aggressor, but that he “allegedly” was so. This means that we will not make any judgments until the results of the Coroner’s Inquiry is out.
Perhaps you view this story as being one-sided. However, we want to let readers know that we have met attempts to contact the other parties involved in the saga, just that they are not too forthcoming at this point of time.
We apologise once again if you view us to be sensationalistic. We would like to inform you that we are making conscious effort not to do so. Hope to hear from you again, and continue reading TOC!
my above comment is addressed to Hal and grumpy in the morning as well.
And to further add:
This article is done in the belief that it is newsworthy. The fact that the autopsy report is out is news and we are just reporting it.
If you would like to dispute that, or point out that my article has been sensationalistic, kindly quote that section of the article to me. I will make changes if necessary.
well done terence
if i really cause david death i will not sleep well surely.
i think the same for anybody.
heaven knows.
Previously, in related article about David, I said thank god we believe in Singapore Police etc etc. I take back my words.
To the people who came in and wrote in pursuit of the truth and justice, you will sleep well.
To the otherwise, well………it will get catch up with you (what? you may ask!!!!, THE TRUTH!!!!!)
Well, David did come to look for the Professor with a knife…. so it seems pretty clear who was the agressor. (Unless the knife belonged to the Prof… then different story).
This aside…. WHAT HAPPENED TO Mas Selamat??? Singapore Jungles are not that huge… you know.
Trust the competent SPF to not catch one limping middle aged man.
To Winstoncheng: What truth? The case remains wide open. There is no conclusion, on anything!
To Terence Lee: I know you mentioned SPF declined to answer. But, is it possible to get more info on the autopsy report. It is just so weird that the report is out but they have no comment, not even to the family. So what happened really???
The report is being analyzed by some doctors because the family did not understand medical jargon in it.
It is very pity to Indonesian family who has high hope with the children future but ended in the campus criminal. Be careful, and think twice if you decide to send your children to Singapore to pursue university education, though, the academic curriculum is high standard but the people may not have the broad minded mentality
Totally agree.
This is a case of clear cut suicide commited by the deceased himself . These indonesians are juz trying to make something out of this and i truely think its absolutely absurd to come out with a thorough autopsy report from a crime scene in 48hours. Not even a stupid crime show like CSI can do dat maan!! Sorry William…we are not some third class countries dealing with cases like this. The reports seems confusing to you and your team of doctors because the fact that you guys are clueless on wat is wat….
If you wanna take it to the centre stage, you guys jolly well have f*^%ing concrete evidence to support the mishandling of this case against the CORRUPTION-FREE govt of Singapore. Well if you guys are out there juz to make money out of this, dont even think about the chance winning more sing dollars and turning them to your worthless ruppiahs and make more millions out of it cos you neva will! ITS ABSURD!Its totally ridiculous. You dont blame SPF n NTU juz bcos YOU think they mishandled the whole issue and THROW THE BALL BACK TO OUR COURT and create a whole tirade out of yourself! I think the whole family should question themselves why the act was committed at the very first place….(maybe due to lack of morale… i guess)
pity on us who are studying in singapore.my housemate is being tease at her school by her own teacher, her teacher said to her “dont stab me ok dont stab me”
do u know that its very rude to say such thing like that?the result is not even out yet,n u are judging that David stab his own professor?if yes David stab his own professor, why till today the professor hsnt show up yet?why whenever the family ask for further information regarding his son death, government always delayed it?please dont be so unfair towards foreigners,u dont know that because of ur selfishness u had cause us being teased by singaporean.
hi huup! i think the main character in the spotlight here is the deceased who stabbed the lecturer and not the poor lecturer himself. the whole picture speaks for itself, the professor is the victim of an act from aggressor. i think you indonesians should try to address more on main issues that leads to this gruesome act rather than blaming the spf or ntu or bla bla bla for coming up with an autopsy report for a month which doesnt do any good to your claims of the whole truth.simply said if you dont like it here, dont have too high hopes of urself cos u always have a choice to get out of here anytime you want to…i noe this line kindda sux and now that you have more things to pity on ur good self.
huup, well if its true dat such a thing happen.. i think wat the teacher meant to the student is more like a SARCASTIC JOKE rather than a teaser…teasing is sumtin that makes someone feel humiliated and i dont think so for this case.
WHATEVER!
yeah if u said tht is because the sarcastic joke, should a teacher use tht sarcastic joke on student in front of everyone?well,i dont think its a nice way though..yeah im thinking to getting out of here anw….u dun need to ask me get out of here, coz i WILL MYSELF get out of here..the more i waste my time here the more i become impolite like those MOST singaporeans did towards their parents…
@wersingaporean: Just want to ask.. Now after those judges, coroners and investigators, reported that CKL’s testimony was not consistent with witnessess, perhaps you can shed some light for us regarding David commit suicide, and CKL was not lying, and all scenes and witnesses are liar. Hmmm?
@wersingaporean : ya perhaps u could explain those above?
WeRsingaporeans represent a minority faction in Singapore. Honestly, most Singaporeans don’t give a hoot about David Widjaja’s plight while some others believe the Professor had a hand in David’s demise. Singaporeans do not share a uniform view on this criminal case.
ha ha ha!! lolz…
and btw,
wersingaporean, I’ve a local friend who recently had a visit to Melbourne and while hangin out in a cafe, a bunch of the locals passed by and shouted at her “Go back to your country !”
so, put that context in your view on that lowly behaved teacher.
and be that person with a TINY BIT of compassion.
if you do have any, that is.
ha ha.
in melbourne, not so many people like singaporean. They thnk singaporean are just…. Materialistic and think they are the best. Singaporean economy is good cuz lots of investors, used to be the harbour, etc. But,… It is a small country, more like a city to me. I cant stand their accent. Haha… Sure they are hardworking people. But, oh well, life is about quality. And i think only few of them know this. Sure their economy is not that bad, and singaporean are proud to say indonesian rupiah is weak. But, hey, who buys the apartment in singapore? Who are the clients in the banking industry? And how about the welfare in singapore? I see lots of old people are employed as taxi drivers, cleaners, etc. Why cant the children support them? I think singaporean should look at other ‘better’ country. Dubai doesnt tax their citizen, gv house, etc. Australia has a good health care system and support citizens during unemployment. US support someone max to 10 years during unemployment. Dont just look down to countries like indonesia. Even indonesia has high corruption level but the government has improved their system. And frankly speak, those who corrupts the money, most of them keep the money overseas. One of the destination is singapore. So, singaporean who insult indonesian by saying their system is corruption-free and indonesian are corrupt, should really think twice before pass their judgement. There is always a grey area in life.
@shar16 : nice one :) hahahhaa…
Even indonesia has high corruption level but the government has improved their system.<<<<<<TRY HARDER!!!!!!
And frankly speak, those who corrupts the money, most of them keep the money overseas. One of the destination is singapore. <<<<this fact is unwarranted and absolutely no concrete evidence can speak for this line. for all u noe, shar16, u are just stereotyping, even if its the fact, we dont even give a hoot about the sources of the money. FOR AS FAR AS SINGAPORE IS CONCERN, WE ARE DOING CLEAN BUSINESS HERE!!!!!
I have been a PR for so liong and sometimes I find that locals think of us as rich. If u locals have read the report on the purchase of apartment, it is the Indonesian and Malaysian the majority of the buyers.

Why has the case become a spy thriller? Why so many unanswered questions? Is it a case of murder over posession of breakthrough scientifc discovery as some alleged, or just sheer incompetence (again) by our Home Team?
