Raffles Institution (Junior College) will be holding its 2nd Raffles Community Leaders Forum (RCLF) from 8 June to 11 June.
As part of the lead-up to the event in June, the student organizers will be holding a pre-forum event at Speakers’ Corner (Hong Lim Park) on May 3rd, Sunday.
The event at Speakers’ Corner on Sunday is part of the publicity to raise public awareness for RCLF and community issues which the forum in June will be exploring. The leaders of the different topics will be giving brief overviews of their issues and pinpointing the specific problems which they have identified, allowing positive engagement of youths to speak up and seek solutions to community problems.
The RCLF is “a platform for youth to gather and collectively engage specific community issues through facilitated discussions, community interaction and talks,” say the organisers. “The final product at the end of the forum would be an action plan detailing the contributions that the Forum participants can make towards ameliorating the problem and addressing the needs of the target community.”
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) this year include:
Reaching out to abused and neglected children
Meeting the needs of the elderly
Youths at risk
Environmental issues
Victims of abuse – outrage of modesty
Understanding the intellectually disabled
Urban poverty
Animal welfare
Understanding the physically disabled
Victims of abuse: dating and domestic violence
The forum is targeted at youths between the ages of 17 to 25 with a “genuine desire to make a difference.”
You can register for the June SCLF here: http://www.rafflesclf.org/
The event on Sunday is as follows:
Date: May 3
Time: 5pm to 7pm
Venue: Speakers’ Corner, Hong Lim Park

is that not the school where leaders come from?
Power to the students!
Darn, 17 onwards?
D: woe to younger ones. Like me.
@plopp, don’t worry, time is on your side. Also, civic consciousness isn’t just about a single event.
Although it’s nice to see the ol’ alma mater taking the lead in mobilizing socially-conscious youths.
Is RI doing this for yet another award?
Glad to hear that our students are concerned with social issues and are playing their parts.
Hope that this maiden effort will spearhead more organized activities by more students of different institutions.
I wish the students/particpants an enjoyable and fruitful get together.

Nothing political, I see! Otherwise, the PRI will lose his job!
This event will not win RI(JC) any award. The main purpose of this is to raise awareness about pertinent social issues in Singapore – things that may have been relatively unknown to the public eye.
Please support this cause at the Hong Lim Park this sunday. It will be worth your while :)
give other school kids a chance too, lesser elitism, ty
Hey Arix that’s prolly not too fair (i’m an AC boy hor just in case you accuse me of favouritism). People willing to stand up and be counted for good causes these days are so hard to come across that we shouldn’t be cynical about them when they do =)
jackKnife, I don’t think this event’s meant to exclude anyone, its at Hong Lim.
aleee, just curious, how many people are you guys expecting for this event, the Hong Lim one?

Last I heard, this event is open to ALL youths from 17-25, it just so happens that RI(JC) is the organiser. And sorry, but I don’t seem to see the link between this and elitism. Unless you tell me there was only one slot available for one school to organise, and MOE gave it RI(JC).
‘relatively unknown to the public’
and you suppose the idea originated from or initiated by students, pure and simple?
can i hear your views?
Go do it students! At least better than not doing anything or just plain talking..
We will be bringing our friends and some relevant VWOs will be turning up at the event. This event serves to give us the chance to voice our opinions about things that matter to us. And these issues in Singapore, they do matter to us :)
The 2nd RCLF welcomes all participants. Everyone is given the chance to participate.
The Rafflesians better not exclude their long-time rival Huachongians…
This is heartening. More of this please. Kudos to RI students for doing this.
I will be there to lend my support. Hope many more will too.
Now, let this be the beginning of more student activism!
(Meeting the needs of the elderly) – will be nice to see how they tackle this one
Is the conference free for everyone to join?
the website says it’s open to all youths aged 17-25, i think.
i rubbed my eyes a couple of times to make sure i did not read wrongly. do these rjc students meant what they say or just a showpiece. why dont they come on 1 aug 2010 for the petition signing for the sabah boy that will be hanged soon. that is a community issue.
