12 noon update

Court 22 at the Subordinate Courts.  This is where the hearing into the mysterious death of David Widjaja is now being held.

Professor Chan Kap Luk, who David is alleged to have stabbed, is not in court yet.

Lawyer Shashi Nathan, whom the Widjaja family has appointed to hold a watching brief at the Coroner’s inquest, will be addressing the press at the end of today’s proceedings.

The TOC team will continue to bring you live updates as this story develops.

Update:

The court decided that the hearing into the case will take place in two tranches. On May 20th, for five days thereon, the court will hear testimonies from the pathologist and from Professor Chan Lup Kup. The date of the second tranche of the hearing will be decided later when the pathologist comes back from her course from June 1st.

At the hearing today, David Widjaja’s family was in attendance. Their lawyer spoke to the media and said that the hearing will provide more details on the circumstances surrounding David’s death.

To a question by TOC, he said that the family will not be making the autopsy report public.

  1. typo in your update, first paragraph second line. Chan Kap Luk. :)

  2. The main stream media still insist that David Widjaja commit suicide.

    Hi David,

MSM’s insistence will ultimately cause a bias in the Judge’s decision. This is a very well known problem among the legal circles. Reading bias material while consciously objecting against it will still influence the decision of the outcome. This biasness will be even more pronounced in our courts as there is no jury panel.

  4. Hi all-vice-starts-small

What is a well-known problem in legal circles? Why do you think that the outcome of the Coroner’s investigation will be bias? I’m not sure I follow you too well. Arguably, jury panels are even more susceptible to being influenced by popular news than professional judges.

Why does David’s family have to sue in order to get a Coroner’s inquiry? Why has it become so difficult to get a fair shake in Singapore? With so many unanswered questions, which agencies are again sleeping at the wheels?

    Hi Jason,

Assuming what you say is true, reading MSM articles will still clout the Judge’s decision.

Kangaroo helps kangaroos. So anyone guess the outcome ?

u get little baby kangeroos in pouch?

  9. Questions which need to be answered:
Why did the family have to wait one day to see Widjaja’s body? From personal experience at the mortuary, there is no hospital regulation on this.
Why was Widjaja’s body wrapped up to the neck? Again, no hospital requirement.
Why is Widjaja’s hand intact when NTU staff told the mainstream media he slashed his own wrists?
Who’s knife is found on the crime scene?
Why is the knife handle missing? It is impossible to stab with a knife that has no handle. The missing handle will have the finger prints – has evidence been tempered?
Why did NTU prevent the family from seeing Prof Chan in the hospital, when a group of students met him the day after the incident (with female student asking him to ignore the postings on the internet) – the mainstream has a report on the student meeting.
Why did NTU erase Widjaja’s records and data from their computers so quickly? Is this also tempering with evidence?
Why did Widjaja tell the Iranian student witness “they are trying to kill me”? – as recalled by Widjaja’s brother in TOC interview after the family’s abortive visit to the prof’s condo.

They better handle this issue more professionally than the Mas Selamat “inquiry” – already Indonesian families are ringing up their Singapore friends to ask if it’s safe to send their sons over for studies. They should make the prof take a polygraph test.

“Why does David’s family have to sue in order to get a Coroner’s inquiry”

Be careful your words. Did they “sue”? It is normal to have appointed lawyers to keep a watching brief.

Before the inquiry starts, there are already kangaroos hopping everywhere here. I think the family’s lawyer gave very sound advice ‘keep an open mind”. Be prepared for the truth.

To #9 … these are very valid questions, hopefully the relevant authority can come out and clarify the doubts

Btw how do you get so much details about the case?

i guess the professor’s mutant powers activated and use his power of persuasion to ask david to jump. ntu got coverup a not? if not how come 2 more EEE students died within the month? must be they both know something about the incident but were ‘silenced’
