Hi Xiong,
I am sorry your friend died innocently. I get your point.

What I'm saying is CNA is just stating the obvious. Most pedestrain accidents occur due to jaywalking. I'm not saying that other accidents like what your friend unfortunately experienced don't happen.

I'm pointing that it's been a long standing issue - pedestrains all over the world get involved in accidents due to jaywalking. It's not as if it's something new to report and as if they had just woken to the fact of it.

As already written in the P65 blog (don't know whether they will publish) in the Swine Flu article, Singapore is over-crowded. If you've been to Bangkok, or major Indian cities, pedestrain deaths are just part and parcel of life. Do we want to be like that?

Yet another play of statistic. the huge "70%" there. Makes the number looks bigger than normal. Imagine if out of 100 killed in road accidents, 10 pple were pedestrians, and out of these 10, 7 were jaywalking. Does that put things into perspective? Does that mean 93% of pple killed in road accidents WERE NOT jaywalking, so by logic, u have a lesser chance of being killed (7% vs 93%) if u *were* jaywalking instead of *not jaywalking*?

1) Kaffein

Pedestrians do not need to be jaywalkers to get involved in a car accident. When reckless drivers lose control or speed pass the red lights and etc. I have a friend who died innocently on the road, just because she was waiting for the bus and a car lose control and knock onto her. And no, she is not a jaywalker.

4) tautologos

Pedestrians who are on the road can refer to those using the traffic lights and the zebra crossing. So I would rule out both your possibilities.

And how about those bunch of cyclists along Nicoll Highway every morning and evening during peak hours? How come they are allowed to cycle on the highway? This is traffic hazard and seems the police patrol don't really bother when they drove passed. I thought highways are not for cyclists all the while and why this time is allowed? Is it because the FW or FT have special previledge and when the locals do it, they got fine. I really don't know what the hell is happening to our country these days.....

>Pedestrians who lost their lives on the road were jaywalkers
>Pedestrians... on the road... jaywalkers

Two possibilities:

1. Incompetence in report writing
2. Colossal redundancy

Also, little india is awesome because the vehicles respect the pedestrian.

Then how else do pedestrains die, you tell me? Fall off the overhead bridge? Heh... of course jaywalk lah. It's like telling zoo tourists in the Primates area that 70% of the species you see here are monkeys. Of course lah, not monkeys, then orang utans or baboons, etc.

Sheesh, sometimes I think we pay too much peanuts to get monkeys.
