United States President Barack Obama delivered his widely-anticipated speech to the Muslim world today in Cairo. Below is an excerpt from his speech:

“It is easier to start wars than to end them. It is easier to blame others than to look inward; to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There is also one rule that lies at the heart of every religion – that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. (Appluase.) This truth transcends nations and peoples – a belief that isn’t new; that isn’t black or white or brown; that isn’t Christian, or Muslim or Jew. It’s a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the hearts of billions around the world. It’s a faith in other people, and it’s what brought me here today.

We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.

The Holy Koran tells us, “O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.”

The Talmud tells us: “The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.”

The Holy Bible tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Applause.)”

  1. Joel (#41),

Very Astute Observation. I was too wondering why ST’s coverage was so badly slanted to one side, whilst TODAY’s was somewhat more objective. I don’t think that the Chief Editor explained the reason for that very well.

Yes, we should bear in mind the possibility of a government conspiracy. But not go overboard of course.

  2. #40,

    haha … quite accurate … indeed …

  3. I wonder if Obama will create an Asian version of he speech when he comes to Singapore in November?

Singapore really needs more democracy, and democratic values as well. Unlike what some irresponsible people have insinuated about me, I am Pro-democracy and Pro-Human-Rights.

    So there!

    Hi Arix,

Eloquence is not equal to “well thought through”. If you claim that biased parties are not capable of “well thought through”, you do realise that applies to Christian Right individuals like you too. I am not here to damper your spirit but the democracy Singapore needs is one free from religious interference. Please stop falsely un-demonising Christianity.

Obama is just a pawn in the game. Nothing ever changes in American foreign policy. It just simply cannot or else the empire will cease to exit. For an empire to be sustained, it must have an ever-bleeding boundary. Obama is just another actor.

“The true terrorists of our world do not meet at the darks of midnight or scream “Allah Akbar!” before some violent actions. The true terrorists of our world wear USD$5,000 suits and work in the highest positions of finance, government and business. So what do we do? How do we stop a system of greed and corruption that has so much momentum. How do we stop this abhorrent group behaviour which feels no compassion for, say, the millions slaughtered in Iraq and Afghanistan so that the corporatocacy can control energy resources and opium production for Wall Street profit.”

He is truly a God-Send. In times of real trouble to the world….somehow…i just don’t know how it happens…..but it does….

The best person comes along…..to keep this World going on….

intelligent guy…with the right values and experience…..the world will be a better place.

  8. prettyplace 7 June 2009

    #borberless…

you are talking from your own experience…the same $5000 suits have made the world a better place. Understand economics….albeit some lobby politicians to gain more….but on the whole the world has improved.

Look at us…form where we were …Singapore that is….to where we are now…..altough..the PAP govt is now trying to be funny..holding on to power.

This thought of yours….is troubled ….i was like you..hating capitalism…for making the rich ..richer….but it also helps the poor…as long as we have a proper govt….to look into peoples needs.

and millions were not slaughtered….altough the Iraq invasion was stupid… and now the invaders are paying the price as well.

  9. Since the heady days of the American presidential elections, when Obama was quite an “untouchable” my respect for him has gone down a few notches now. The fact that Obama, in his recent speech, had to go pandering to the 3 middle-east religions (lets call them the terrible 3, or T3) is quite a downer, a futile exercise, and something not befitting a man of Obama’s intellect and stature. As we all know, the T3 has been at each others throat in a bloody rampage, extending back to a few thousand years, and until today they are still at it in their murderous internecine affairr; and up to quite recent history, the flattening of 2 Japanese cities and the gassing of 6 million was their coup-de-grace, their magnificient work of art. The inevitability of Armeggedon(nuclear war with 95% wiped-out) is the likely fate of mankind; the root cause of which would obviously the dogmas of the T3 their believe that they are unique, that their God is the only true one, their path is the only true one and that they are the chosen ones of God. The potent mix of the fact that half of mankind are followers of the T3 and the proliferation of nuclear weapons does not augur too well for the future of man. Therefore, for Obama to be pandering to the T3 is a big letdown for everybody..

  10. Time will bring you down, no matter who u are 7 June 2009

I hereby BEG Mr Obama to come to Singapore and listen to the real voices, uncensored.

  11. borderless 7 June 2009

who really controls this world? so who are real perpetrators of 9-11? so you how powerful the financial institutions and military complexes are?

let me teach me you. first go and google 9-11 truth.

    41) Joel Low

Love your phrase “. If you cannot handle the heat do not enter the kitchen.”

  13. Just a passing thought;;;When was the last time politicians mixed up politics with scripture and religion? Wasn’t it during the Crusades when old Salladin and George were mixing it up on the killing fields of the Holy-land

  14. Hi borderless#56#61;;;;Totally agree with you;;;;An astute reading of the American scene

  15. KopitiamApek 7 June 2009

It is interesting to note that some posts here gave the impression of idolising him, viewing him as the knight in shining armour coming to rescue all of us poor things in Singapore, living in misery, in their perceived “shit-hole” we are now in.

It is quite a sad and pathetic victim-mode state of mind, blaming gahmen for everything, and now hoping the US gahmen come to rescue us?

  16. KopitiamApek 7 June 2009

It may be a bit premature to speculate on his popularity/disapproval ratings.

  17. smallvice (#54),

I will say this for the last time: I AM NOT A MEMBER OF THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT!!!! Can you get that through your numb-skull!!

And again, you are saying “stop … undemonising Christianity”.

  18. buda (#59),

I had thought you were more objective. The gassing of the 6 million was the work of the Nazis, which were an Atheist Group, not of your so-called “T3″. The flattenning of the Japanese Cities was by American Military leaders who were not really acting from religious conviction.

Incidentally too, the T3 did not invent nuclear weapons. Nuclear weaponry were created by Secular Scientists.

Your history of the “T3″ is over-simplistic. Christianity and Islam made huge contributions to the advancement of civilization. Although some people might choose to forget, Christian philosophers made their due great contributions to “Secular” Philosophy, or rather what has been hijacked as Secular Philosophy by the Atheists. Islam contributed art, science and architecture to Europe and to the World. In fact, the Muslim occupation of Spain is acknowledged as one of the major causes of the European Renaissance.

Anyhow, I see Obama trying to mediate between the followers of the “T3″ rather than pandering to them. I think you are being unnecessarily harsh.

  19. Hi Arix #68;;;”Nazism, with Hitler’s plans for a magnificient new capital at Berlin can be described as attempting a version of the new Jerusalem”—Since Fritz Stern’s classic study “The politics of cultural despair” most historians have viewed the relation of nazism and religion this way;;;;;and;;;;;In his study “The holy reich” historian Richard Stiezman Gall comes to the conclusion “Christianity, in the final analysis, did not constitute a barrier to nazism”;;;;;;;;;;;;;And where the flattenning of the 2 Japanese cities is concerned, it is not lost on anyone that the first time nuclear weapons have been used, they were used by a christian American government. Japan, at that time was on the verge of defeat ;was it right to kill 200,000 civilians. Even when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour they attacked a military naval base, not a city of civilians.

  20. Rurehe 7 June 2009

    A cleverly crafted speech.

He is not an orat\or and he was not out to orate. He just want to pass his messages to all.

Yet his pay is only half a million USD per year.

    Very modest pay.

Our great man in Sing gets USD 2.5 million per year and yet he cannot deliver any good speech. No style. Flat. Very flat. Like a funeral chant.

Our great man in sing should opt to get Obama’s pay packet and strive to give better speeches.

    Can he?

  21. Rurehe 7 June 2009

Responding to Budamax 1952, since Japan was on the verge of defeat but she was bent on fighting to death. She was doing that already on the islands that were close to Japan, like Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the fall of these nearby islands Japan was certain to be defeated but she was prepared to sacrifice more and more lives. The USA were losing so many of their best young men, the Marines and given such circumstances it opted for the A-bomb and it was just available at that time. They had only two and they just used it. It was not a case of religion. They wanted to shorten the was and they wanted fewer young USA men to die.

The Nazis were hard fighters but the fanaticism, ferocity and fight to death approach of the Japanese made the fighting spirit of the Nazis look like a Sunday school picnic. If I was the CEO of USA at that time I would not hesitate to use the nuclear bomb.

Nothing to do with religion. Just being practical.

  22. KopitiamApek 8 June 2009

    71) Rurehe

Sorry, Your view of the war is rather simplistic.

  23. Rurehe (#70),

The Great Man would argue that Obama has more generous pensions than he does.

  24. Rurehe (#71),

    I concur with KopitiamApek (#70).

  25. buda (#69),

I simply see that Hitler attempted to create an alternative Religion with himself as god of course. Just like what all Atheist Rulers try to do. Because in the end, Atheism cannot by itself provide a social order.

And by the time the 20th Century dawns, it is a problem referring to any Western Nation as “Christian”, and especially the USA. By the 1870s, all of Europe is fully Secular. So it is a Secular Nation that bombs Japan, not a Christian Nation.

At any rate, Bombing Japan wasn’t done in order to defend Christianity.

Here is one darker truth on the Christians who invaded the Americas ..

“The christians, Alcaraz, according to the Natives lied. Best quote: “We came from the sunrise, they from the sunset; we healed the sick, they killed the sound; we came naked and barefoot, they clothed, horsed, and lanced; we coveted nothing but gave whatever we were given, while they robbed whomever they found and bestowed nothing on anyone.”
This was what the Indians of the Christians.

The same Achyra that seems to think the recognised medival forgery Gospel of Judas as being a credible source of history?

Why don’t people attacking Christianity ever check out their sources?

  29. 69)

    Budamax.

Your are referring to the political movement helmed by Hitler right? The same person who so adored Nietchez who in turn loathed Christianity and Judaism?

I mean, the Nazi’s certainly didn’t borrow the term ubermensch and their worldview from Nietchez right?

    Oh wait, they did.

  30. Hi all,

please refrain from mud-slinging one another.

Arix, I appreciate your participation in this forum, but I will advice you to stick to the topic and not make claims like “Unlike some of the other posters here, who are having a filed day demonising Christianity in the threads on AWARE.”

This applies to all other topics which you are currently discussing as well. Do take note of this when you participate in other discussions.

Also, in light of how this thread has degenerated into senseless religious squabble, I will now close this thread.
