  3. You see! They show their true coulours. Everything within thir control. In future if you need anything, you must get approval from the minister. Poor S’porean!!!!

Enough is Enough. Vote them out brothers and sisters!!!

  4. didyouknoworNOT? 21 July 2009

they really want full control over anything. will they be taking over our lives soon?

  5. Too late, they’ve already taken over…

In this day and age, only Singapore would suggest taking the authority to appoint from a group and issue it to one man. Since no mention of this (correct me if I’m mistaken on this) was made prior to the tabling in parliament, I would assume it’s a done deal and the changes will be cast in stone pretty soon.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of the Law Society – I wouldn’t expect them to take this lying down…

  7. all in the pocket 21 July 2009

Looks like the incumbents are getting more paranoid about lawyers despite putting JBJ, F Seow, Tang LH, etc out of business.

Judiciary not enough ? still want to put all lawyers in the pocket ?
    What other profession next ?

  8. SoSad 21 July 2009

Woah, we have a situation where all the players, referees and officials
are in the same organisation. Why do spectators watch the show? Well,
WWF has a huge following too.

  9. Daniel 21 July 2009

Very soon before the election, the ministers will propose a new law that they themselves can vote themselves out. This, my friend, is just the first step. When one controls the law and above the law, he controls the state and everything else.

  10. Daniel 21 July 2009

He who is above the law is above anything else. I’m afraid the only way to overthrow this oppressive and corrupted government is a revolution not election. It confirm that this country is a modern dynasty run by self-serving assholes who do as they please and as they like.

  11. mice is nice 21 July 2009

come, come, why not suggest their pay review be approved by the people, aka, S’poreans?

i think the mini-star scared of Chief Editor of TOC, Choo Zheng Xi!!

    :)

  12. Daniel 21 July 2009

    mice is nice,
“come, come, why not suggest their pay review be approved by the people, aka, S’poreans?”

“Are you a reviewer ? Only if the minister says so !” So to review the pay, the reviewer must be approved by MIW too so that the reviewer can only say positive and constructive about the clown’s pay and how they are worthy millions and make great sacrifice unlike lesser mortal.

  13. mice is nice 21 July 2009

    hi Daniel,

so much for not biting the hand (of taxpayers) that feeds…

  14. Paranoid and supremacy manifestations – more outstretched tentacles soon and gradually all encompassing………

  15. CelluloidReality 21 July 2009

Professional accreditation should not be done by politicians. They are not heads of the legal education in Singapore.

  16. mice is nice 21 July 2009

the “you’re either with us or against us” mindset.

    another 1st for S’pore? lol…

  18. Singaporean lawyers deserve the shit that the Law ministry has in store for them, because they are the most balls-less and spine-less bunch of pricks in the world.

  19. I like to understand what the sentence means 21 July 2009

I like to confirm if my understanding is correct.
    Is Today saying that
The Law Ministry proposes that the Law Minister have the power to Determine who becomes a Lawyer?

Who is the head of Law Ministry?

    can someone clarify for me?

    more good years.

  20. tiredsingaporean 21 July 2009

Maybe they are so paranoid to the core and afraid that one day all the lawyers would ganged up and go against them so better to lay red taps on them first.

  21. Goodyear Tyres 21 July 2009

    Dear Lawyer Chia Li Tik,

    PAP wants to disbar you.

  22. tiredsingaporean 21 July 2009

I wonder what the IBA has got to say about this?

  23. Terence Goh 22 July 2009

    This a very good move!

We all know that whatever committees we have will be filled with yes-men. These yes-men cannot make their own decisions anyway. So we should cut to the chase and go straight to the minister for the decision.

The result is that we save money on not appointing yes-men, and it is more efficient too!

  24. monopoLee 22 July 2009

It appears the implication is directed at lawyers, i.e. think many times before you participate in the next GE as an opposition.

The oldman is doing his damnest to make things secure for the spineless heir in case he departs for the grave before the GE.
Can you imagine who will wet his pants if he has to deal with the likes of JBJ, F Seow or Tang LH, and without the oldman around ?

  25. ney reed 22 July 2009

well my only hope is that the minister dont recognize all the singapore lawyers who
    - run away with clients money
    - break up families in domestic disputes to earn money through divorce proceedings
    - do all their acrobatics in motor vehicle insurance claims
    - all the other nonsense that they do which is LAWFUL but unjust, unfair, wicked and cruel

  26. prettyplace 22 July 2009

Maybe someone in the familee cannot pass the exams…

    Arh..this one is a real joke….
If anyone opposing PAP cannot be a lawyer anymore, unless they are already qualified. (of course, we know they can be disbarred)

Thus, nobody can defend any opposition in court. Therefore, judiciary will not be questioned. And what a beautiful peaceful society we will have once again under Lee

( Do they realise that Spain has just come up with new laws to file a report against anyone in the world and the hearing will be in Spainish courts, If proven then our dear leaders will not be able to enter EU anymore and assets in the EU seized)

“Who is the head of Law Ministry?”

Good question. Answer: The Law Minister, of course.

    So now we can translate:

“The Law Ministry is proposing that the Minister now be the one with the power to approve a person as legally qualified”

    to:

“The Law Minister is proposing that the Law Minister now be the one with the power to approve a person as legally qualified.”

Self-appointment, obviously, but that’s not unusual; it’s PAP format.

The Law Society may need to seriously ponder over this, and maybe come up with a proposal of its own, perhaps along this line:

“The Law Society is proposing that the Law Society now be the one with the power to appoint or to approve as to who should be the Law Minister and that the Law Society be empowered also to dismiss or sack anyone, including the Law Minister, in the Law Ministry.”

  28. First they did away with the appeal to the Privy Council,(after the JBJ case)
then they stripped the Law Society right to comment on Govt Policy matters (after
    Francis criticisms)
Now the final tightening of the noose with all practising lawyers having to be
approved by a PAP minister. The status quo is actually working fine, the why
    change it?
When other countries are heading toward democratic and open reforms,
we are moving the other way
I think its a warning to political dissidents and oppositionists who are lawyers.
What profession will they control next? Doctors, Architects, bankers etc?

  29. V S RAAJ 22 July 2009

I have always been a pro-govt. supporter and I am deeply disapointed that such a bill has been proposed in the Parliament and would totally disappointed if it gets through.
One man ‘rules’ is not my cup of tea for the matter. One man ‘rules’, in my dictionary, is like drifting back to communist idealisms. It is definately not healthy and not warranted for developed nation like Singapore. It undermines all professionals and professional bodies!

Will lawyers protest at Speakers’ Corner?

  31. Creationist is Synonymous to Id--t 22 July 2009

Will Singapore lawyers protest at Speakers’ Corner?

In Pakistan, lawyers organised a protest march after former President Musharaf undermined the independence of the Judiciary by imprisoning the Chief Justices.

“i am the Law, the Judge & the Jury!!” waha-hahaa…

“the power is mine, all mine!!”

    *evil grin*

  33. truth hurts 22 July 2009

Am I right that the Law Minister has a say in the appointment of judges ?
Now he wants to have the final say who can be a lawyer and will that be enough ?
Or will it subsequently include the final say which case deserves legal hearing ?

Isn’t this a slippery slope to a system of justice which eventually will become the most obscene on this planet ?

  34. borderless 22 July 2009

I feel so sorry for the common people of Singapore … they are so tormented and yet powerless.

I know of lawyers who are pbm. What does pbm mean? How they got the pbm?

  37. Hahaha 23 July 2009

This is an attack on the professional status of lawyers in Singapore.

Imagine the following analogies to similar high status professions.

“The Health Ministry is proposing that the Health Minister now be the one with the power to approve a person as medically qualified.

The Finance Ministry is proposing that the Finance Minister now be the one with the power to approve a person as a qualified Certified Public Accountant.”

    Doesn’t the above sound ridiculous?

  38. “The Law Ministry is proposing that the Minister now be the one with the power to approve a person as legally qualified.”

The passing of this proposal also brings up the question:
If the Minister is the one who is going to be approving whether someone can be a lawyer or not, does this mean that this person no longer need to pass the bar exam to practice law?
    OR
The person have to go thru all the current hoops to pass the law exams, bar exams… and all the what-nots requirements to become a lawyer. And after all that, he still has to get the Minister to approve that he is legally qualified in order to practice law in Singapore? Then what exactly is the purpose of the new proposal?

    Puzzling!

  39. mice is nice 24 July 2009

will cleaners suffer the same fate being approved at ministerial level?

“are you a cleaner? only if Ministry of Health says so.”

    lol…
