More women to be in politics
In Quotes • 574 views • 25 Comments
It is really through the vision of the men who were in charge … Most of us came through because we were identified by the leaders who were men.
PAP Women’s Wing chairman Lim Hwee Hua

selecting more duds
leaders with vision would not touch women like Lee B W with a 20 foot pole and others like Irene Ng, Indranee Rajah, etc , etc, with a 10 foot pole.
if Lim Hwee Hua is that good, then stand as an independent against Sylvia Lim, don’t piggy back on some so called leader’s coat-tail.
i am curious which men with vision Lim Hwee Hua was talking about ?
if a dud like Lim Swee Say can be in the PMO, then she really has nothing to crow about.

dont know what’s talking about?
is it elite language?
by the way, is the message address to elites, or public?
if to public, maybe they need to convert to commoners’ language hor..

#1 mice is nice….
You have made a good point…..why isn’t she not mentioning about the present male leader or leaders…..what’s wrong with them….
Another good point she mentioned and we all must give credit is that
“all the current batch of women MPs had tabled 42 per cent of all parliamentary questions in the first half of their term, said Mrs Lim.”

hi PrettyPlace,
maybe she is really better than the men of the current crop? when the old man is gone she will “usurp” the PM’s seat?
(O.O)
hmmm, of the 42%, Sylvia Lum is how many %? (o.O)

can’t help but laugh at “… the leaders who were men.”, so after stepping down they change gender?
:P
dorm
Would she have been made a Minister if there was no foreign worker dorm fiasco in Serangoon Gardens?
Since she is without portfolio among the thousands of ministers in PMO, her post did not exist.
Obviously the reason she got promoted was a silly attempt to try to get back lost votes in the upper middle class enclave.
More appropiately, she should have been named minister in charge of foreign wprker dorm.
tiredsingaporean
is she talking to the ppl or through the ppl for the master???? sigh!!!
Clear eyed
To be precise, she and all the rest of them, men and women, were identified and selected by ONE man whose vision is to install a dynasty here. And they are each paid obscenely well with OUR money to help HIM realise his dream.

I think the women’s group is another power network that attracts all kinds, in particular the well-educated, ambituous professional types. Take a look at some of their agendas such as ‘Dialogue with Singapore Association of Women’s Lawyers’, ‘…Instiution of Enginners’ etc here: http://ww.pap.org.sg/html_wwadmin/
Just looking at Lim HH’s quote, isn’t it all about ‘coming through’ – but to go where? Into achieving top-dog leadership positions?
Obviously it’s a breeding ground for co-optation into the party-politik running on narrowly-defined interest platforms such as career advancements for professional women – surely there must be more urgent issues than these.
So I do not seriously think they’re actually speaking for anybody except themselves.

Besides, its just silly of LHH to stereotype differences like taking women to be more detailed, sensitive, caring, nurturing etc. And her statement that 42% of parliamentary questions being raised by women does not cut at all with me – these questions are raised by them as Parliamentarians, not solely because they’re ‘women’!! Does LHH mean that if Irene Ng, Yalimah Yacob, Indranee etc had not been ‘women’ then they can’t or will not be able to raise these issues/questions?

women are generally good followers. they make good leader follower, not leader leader like gandhi, jesus, lincoln, jefferson, plato etc
no wonder PAP wants them.

such frivolus charbo can get in..she’s a mockery to democracy..not only to women but the entire human race!
time for more women
Lim Hwee Hua is the first woman to be in the PMO and she can help LHL identify all the potential female candidates for the next GE. Incidently, being chairman of the PAP women’s wing helps with this task.
Perhaps it is time the PAP makes a serious change to alter the gender ratio, such that women are the majority in parliament with just a handful of men as token representation.
LHL can start by replacing all the men in his PMO with women, example would be Halimah for Lim Swee Say. There should be a role for Ho Ching, fielding her in some sure-win GRC, subsequently appointing her as DPM and Minister of Finance, taking over from Wong KS and Tharman respectively.
Lim Hwee Hua should persuade LHL to appoint more women as cabinet ministers from the present pool. There is ample talent when one looks at the likes of irene Ng, Lee Bee Wah, Indranee, Amy, etc.
Wee Shu Min should be returning soon and should play a leadership role in the PAP women’s wing and of course fielded in future GE. She is a natural to head the defence ministry. Nothing like a woman defence minister to kick the balls of those wimpy men doing NS. A sure cure to all the moaning and groaning of serving one’s country. LOL

I dont think it is a gender issue here but of the heart.
If the female or male MP can help the ground people then he is a very good politician – gender doesnt count here.
We can have many women MPs but they must be people who knows the ground well.
They dont need to be too scholarly too as if they always score Straight As and live in bungalow, I am sure that they wont be able to empathsize with the heartbeat of the common people.
It may be timely for the state to select people who have experience with the ground now rather than searching from top brass CEOs or COOs.

Membership has its privileges. Unfortunately, we had our fair share of big mouth lady MPs who behave like the typical lady boss. Due credit shd be given to some who have the grassroot touch (Lily Neo). If only MPs can really push for some issues or give feedback effectively to the ruling organisation, then it will be true representation of the the electorate. If not, it is simply cronyism or just a high class country club, whether MPs are male or female.

wow, all in passed tense….
“were,… were,… were,…”, sounds like people are still stuck in the past.
