From Maruah:
Dear Friends,
MARUAH (The Singapore Working Group for ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism) would like to invite you to a Consultation Workshop etitled “Engaging the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) – The People’s Views”.
Since 1993 ASEAN has been talking about establishing a Human Rights Body. In 2007 under the ASEAN Charter there was provision for such a body to be formed. Then last month the Terms of Reference were accepted and this body now has a name – The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on ASEAN Human Rights. By October 2009, this Commission will be born at the ASEAN Summit in Thailand.
This is a considerable breakthrough. The work is also cut out for all stakeholders. We all have a role to play to make this instrument credible.
Just within the next three months ASEAN governments will be selecting their representative to the Commission. How will this group shape this body over the next few years and how will civil society actors interact with the Commission? How will governments/civil society deal with the Commisision?
In this evolutionary process how do the stakeholders ensure that the Commission will only grow in strength and that the human rights of people are preserves, promoted and protected.
With the help of our partners – the Institute of South East Asian Studies, ASEAN Studies Centre and the kind sponsoring of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung – we are able to put a programme together to update stakeholders on the discussions and to gather views.
This is an opportune moment for us to get engaged on human rights and to look for synergies. We believe this Workshop would be a critical event for stakeholders. As such, we take this opportunity to encourage you to attend this Workshop and to contribute to the reflection on the issues of engaging appropriately and effectively with AICHR.
Please look at the following attachments and join hands with us in this process. We look forward to meeting you at this event.
Best Wishes,
Braema Mathi

Hi Braema, I’m not going to be able to make it — I’m not back in Sg till 26/8! V disappointing. Perhaps the date/time/location of the consultation could be placed on this page for clarity?
It’s probably not funny but you might want to take a look at the tagline on this site:
Get engaged on human rights!
Do just pay lip service to Human Rights. Get involved! Support this workshop! Maruah.
I wonder….
how much are the charges for attending.? Is meal provided?

The Singapore Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism (MARUAH) is attending the 8th Workshop on the ASEAN Regional Mechanism on Human Rights in Bangkok, Thailand, 14-15 July 2009.
In Day 1 of the workshop, speakers and participants discussed the following issues
* ASEAN Human Rights Body (AHRB) should not be a standalone, but part of a regime, including a set of norms.
…..
what is norm? Burma suing ASSK is norm? Singapore suing opposition is norm?
Admin, it’s “Do NOT just pay lip service to Human Rights. ” Please correct it. Thanks…
Post #4 fish ‘n’ chips;
me concurs with your comment.

# 4 fish ‘n’ chips /// name us any violations in Singapore /// Bro’, with due respect to you, i can’t believe the response from you; are you trying to kid us; Are you suggesting that there are no human rights violations in this personal fiefdom of the PAPies. To enlighten you about the PAPies authouritarion powers to limit citizens rights, here’s a list, and its by no means exhaustive. [1] handicapping political opposition [2] preventive detention i.e ISA [3] executive influence over the judiciary [4] infrinzement of citizen’s privacy rights [4] restriction of speech and press-freedom and self-censorship by journalists [5] restriction of freedom of assembly and freedom of association [6] some restriction on freedom of religion [7] some trafficking in persons. And bro’, this is just for starters, we still got the main-course and not forgetting the desserts.
“Human rights” is also another favourite tool the West use to ensure their world domination.
And there is a sucker born every minute outside of the US to support it, unaware that they are shooting their own foot.
Ted, you must be sleeping on a overdose of political propaganda.
1) The ruling party of SG government is denying its citizens rights to their CPF monies.
2) The ruling party of SG government is denying its political opponents (as well as citizens) the rights to a fair election.
3) The ruling party of SG government is using public funds for their own benefits and political gains (i.e. HDB upgrading); violating equal rights to all citizens regardless of their political preference.
4) The ISA deprives citizens the rights to a fair trial is a wild card and a license to kill simply on SUSIPICION. Need I say more?
5) The rights to free speech, even on the Internet are deprived from its citizen.
and last but no least
6) The SG law refuses to abolish the draconian Woman’s Charter; depriving Singapore man of equal rights.

Please read my post again.
Thanks!
Me wishes that MARUAH will also look into and deal with the Compulsory Enlistment of male citizens into the Armed Forces in SIN. Conscription in my opinion contravenes Human Rights.

If SinKaporean think that human rights are well protected in the Republic of LKH, then it is not a surprise that the PAP regime could get away with so much violation. Press freedom is one easy example to quote. Political freedom and freedom of speech are another example. SinKaporean are so used to living in a made believe world that they could not tell the difference between a truly free country from the one that is dictatorial. Sad but true. The day will come when all the dirty deeds of PAP are on display for the world to see. All of us have to go to meet our maker one day and MM Lee is no difference unless he believed he is God.Our oldest UK citizen who had just passed away was 113 year old. Assuming MM Lee live to that age, then there is another 28 years to go. However, I would suggest you don’t hold your breadth.
