“Forbes’ Power Women list isn’t about celebrity or popularity; it’s about influence,” says the American publishing and media company, Forbes. It names German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the Most Powerful Woman in the world, for the fourth year running this year. The Chancellor is the leader of the world’s fourth-largest economy.

Ho Ching, CEO of Singapore’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, Temasek Holdings, and wife of the Prime Minister, is ranked fifth, up from eight spot last year. “Temasek has delivered extraordinary average annual returns of 18% under the leadership of Ho Ching,” Forbes says in its appraisal. However, Forbes got it wrong when it described Ho Ching as “Singapore’s first lady”.

“Singapore’s first lady is keeping her day job in the corner office while she looks for another successor,” the magazine said. (See here)

The first lady of Singapore is the wife of the President, although there is no Constitutional provision for this.

Forbes describes Ho Ching’s “next challenge” as “maintaining Temasek’s vaunted 18% compounded annual return since the fund’s 1974 inception.”

What? The Queen of England is only 42nd?

  2. tiredsingaporean 20 August 2009

    38) patriot on August 20th, 2009 4.13 pm Mrs Lee Hsien Loong as First Lady.

    Was the mistake intentional ?

Maybe duh! it could be that now its a mistake but who knows when PM’s term is up, there could be arrangement to make him our next President, possible? of course its obvious.

  3. Omega Lee 20 August 2009

Which means by default she is the most powerful ethnic Chinese woman in the world. Somehow with all the attention on big fat ministers’ pay, what happen to disclosing HER remuneration and “retirement” bonus?

  4. “Somehow with all the attention on big fat ministers’ pay, what happen to disclosing HER remuneration and “retirement” bonus?”

And also her claim to extraordinary asset which is Singapore INC.

  5. Ya….perhaps Dhana will yet again see her true talent and recommand her for Presidentship….afterall she’s already “Mother of all charities” to most

  6. HoChing rules 20 August 2009

It is an insult to HO CHING (and the lee family) that she is only ranked 5th. In the Lee family, nothing less than first class or first would suffice. They should immediately put Forbes on restricted circulation until her ranking improves!

  7. Forbes is just rubbing salt on her “wounds”…..

Being Sacarstic to famiLee without getting sue.

So that anyone out there in the world who do not know who she really is (and her family background & PAP), will make her & the PAP even more “well known”……

    Reverse Psychology.

  8. “Forbes is just rubbing salt on her “wounds”…..

Being Sacarstic to famiLee without getting sue.”

Yeah. the next contest for Forbes should be beauty pageant for influential females. Forbes can make up for its honest mistake and reputation by putting Ho Jinx first on the list. The oldman can then have no worry and can even retire with life of no regret.

The Queen of England can be ranked 4200th, do anyone in this part of the world really cares?
I cannot understand people who can still be worshipping a Queen,
I thought it only happen in fairy tales?

  10. I’ll this ranking with a pinch of salt, or just good entertainment,
    Hilary Clinton ranked 36
    Sonia Gandhi ranked 13
    Queen Elizabeth II ranked 42
    :)

  11. Omega Lee 21 August 2009

Queen Elizabeth is respected not because she is a monarch but she has moral fortitude as a leader for her people, espcially during WWII while the Nazis were continuously bombing her country. In the meantime, a Perankan Chinese destined to be the Leader was busy translating for the Japanese.

  12. Omega Lee 21 August 2009

If Forbes were to compile a rank of the world’s most powerful men in the world without regard to any morals or ethics, Kim Jong Il will surely be in the top 10. I mean he can pull the strings of his neighbors and the West by extorting them with the threat of a nuke.

Its like Time magazine naming Hitler “Man of the Year” in 1937.

  13. aiyoyo

cpf $ when take out?, housing $ high?

    aiyoyo

  14. No More 21 August 2009

I would like to nominate the Good Chimpanzee as “Top Money-Losing SWF CEO”. There is no First Lady in Singapore. She’s also not a lady — wears her pajamas everywhere.

  15. theforgottongeneration 21 August 2009

Ja, Hitler waz Times “Man of Year” 1938, SieLee Ho! But Times included the citation “for better or for worse.”

Such ratings are specific for only a particular segment of society. Question is, what good does it do for the common-man-on-street? Considering that TH achieved (said) 18% annualized returns since inception, Temasek Cares drips back only S$2m to the community from which its seed monies is from. Assuming gains of say, $2-10b each year, we are talking a payback of maybe 0.05% to the people. Put money in POSB FD is better!

  16. VoteOutLee 21 August 2009

    Samtom,
In my opinion, I think she is the MOST powerful woman in the world. Just imagine, who else in the world can make mistakes again and again and still survive without a single reason or explanation needed. She is the one and only. So she should be in number 1 spot. Not 5th

and to add on…no apologies needed.
She must hv make Ass Loong every happy in bed with some
powerful thrust back in HIS hubby ass in order keep Ass Loong from mentioning the billions losses.

  17. johntan 21 August 2009

the loss is far more greater if they did not change the accounting rule.
taking temasek predecessor earning credit to averge out her loss. Temasek still has 18% return – that is credit of predecessor not hers. How dare!!!! shameless as XXX!
Anyway those sitting on top take decision not make decision. with or without them is alright, when will the rest of 66 persent of Singaporean wake up.

  18. Omega Lee 21 August 2009

“I’ll this ranking with a pinch of salt, or just good entertainment,”

Like David Letterman’s top ten list.

  19. one question, how much is she paid as CEO????

  20. #58 Daniel /// the next contest for Forbes should be beauty pageant for influential females /// ;;; Hi Daniel ;;; Yeah, i agree, with Angela Merkel baring half of her breasts on the world stage recently, a beauty pageant of the most influential females on earth would be the next ‘in thing’. Ho Jinx (especially if she is dressed-up in her favourite butterfly-coloured bikini and top) will definitely be crowned number one if she is competing against the likes of Elizabeth, Sonia, Merkel, Hillary etc. Another first for Singapore is surely in the line, and the PAPies, MM and PM will be buusting with pride.

  21. Angelina 22 August 2009

I am still waiting for the world’s 5th most powerful woman to write one book, see what substance such woman got, even if it is “How to lose billions of your money with no regrets”.

  22. Mr Yamamoto
Mr Obama pay is a fraction to LHL. America have a Check & Balance system & Weighting system. Here don’t have! Is just like any amount taking as U like. Even Ah Beng or Ah Seng, if they are Lee Kuo Yaw son! SG reverse is control by one person!

  23. agreement 24 August 2009

She sure is a very powerful and inscrutable woman in her own rights. Any commoner who touches her will crumble to dust instantaneously… hahaha

  24. Realist 24 August 2009

I guess if there is a “most powerful person” award she will be ahead of her husband as well.
