In 2006, after the General Elections, PM Lee Hsien Loong warned that Singapore society would be “destroyed” if S’poreans were divided between the haves and have-nots:

We must also not allow ourselves to be divided between haves and have-nots, or winners and losers. We have built a society where every Singaporean has access to good housing, education, healthcare, and much more. This is the result of the deliberate policy of the PAP government, and the efforts of our MPs, grassroots leaders and other volunteers on the ground. If we let the politics of envy drive a wedge between us, our society will be destroyed, and all will suffer. That must never happen. (Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his swearing-in speech in 2006.)

Now that MM Lee has said a social divide is “inevitable”, will Singapore society be “destroyed”, as PM Lee warned in 2006? Apparently, the “deliberate policy” of the PAP government has resulted in this “inevitable social divide”.

What must the government now do about this? Or will it simply put the blame on “globalisation”, as MM Lee did in the Straits Times report?

  1. To Scratch Head. The PAP gov. just run S’pore as an private co. Not the kind of leaders in the past only take peanuts to feed himself. Now he or she will need big big peanuts to feed the entire family plus saving for the future generations.

As I mentioned above, as executive officers of Singapore Inc, all its officers demand high salary. To them, Singapore is a company, not a nation. This is another flaw of the Singapore Inc ideology that we are currently experiencing.

But they are going to have a hard time convincing the populace now that US’s big shot CEOs are having their pay trimmed. However, I will be interested to see what kind of excuses they will come up with to defend their fat pay checks.

  3. New Era 24 October 2009

It is said that the PAP took its loyal citizens for granted. They will, however, find the 2 million China nationals a different kettle of fish. Once the numbers of China nationals reach 3 or 4 million here, these people will form a political party and elect their own countrymen to parliament. The will then get their hands on the billions of dollars of reserves that our fathes and forefathers worked hard to build.

Of course if they don’t manage to do that, they can always stage an incident where a few of them get hurt. They will then plead for China to intervene here. China will send the PLA down, and with 3 million China nationals already here, that will spell the end of Singapore.

Now that MM Lee has asserted and confirmed the Rich/Poor Divide is unavoidable and inevitable to SIN, i must say that i fully agree with PM Lee Hsien Loong that such a divide will definitely destroy this society. We will and shall pay for the Sin to cause this divide to happen and allow the gap between them to grow before our very eyes.

Most do believe that this divide could be moderated and or the gap narrowed with good and sound policies. But, unfortunately, the contrary is suspected to have happened; it is believed that it is the policies that have speeded up and exacerbated and aggravated the Rich/Poor Divide.

Well, like it or not, the society and its’ people have to face the consequences of their deeds, negligences and complacencies. The Leaders and the People collectively are responsible for the dismay result. It is just regrettable that it has to happen within such a short period of independence.

  6. without the delication and determination of 1st generation pap leaders, there would not be today singapore

by saying that gobalsation is the root of the “inevitable social divide” shows that the present pap leaders may not have solutions to the problems that singapore is facing today…..

in my view, the biggest fault of the pap is that they have given themselves to much power and the hat is now becoming oversized….in short, they may not deliver what they have promised…the goh chok tong election mandate…

the introduction of the GRC had enabled the pap to hold onto power, but the price to pay would be an inevitable disaster for the pap itself.

with the exception of a few, the quality of these GRC members of parliaments is there for us to judge.

the 1st generation of pap leaders is like our soccer team of the 1970s and the kallang roar…

  7. this looks messy… and fun.

i refer to the suggestion that the ‘silver bullet’ to all our ails is to vote for more opposition, regardless of who, what, where, how.

If tomorrow, X party (oppostition) says they think the soln to all Singapore ails is to let in more FWs, will you still vote for them? It is also important to know where the opposition’s position on these issues are. Yes, they are opposing- the qns is whether they are opposing in the right direction.

Unless they stand up and make a stand, no one really knows which direction they are opposing in. There maybe red-neck opposition supporters- who don’t really care. But there are also many others who don’t like the idea of giving blank cheques. the current opposition lack visibility. very little people knows what they stand for and what they believe in.

and on top of all the often-discussed incumbent advantages,
the opposition is not helping itself.

  8. Referring the topic itself-

it is a fact that social inequality and stratification is a common feature among many countries. We have heard often that globalization is teh cause of social inequality. (can someone remind me why is this so again?) But I will say it has more to do with our core values of meritocracy rather than anything else.

Meritocracy means rewarding people according to their achievement etc. Since achievement is uneven, this implicitly breeds reward and social inequality.

Furthermore, meritocracy makes people more self-centred since it breeds the idea that how you are rewarded depends on how well you climb upwards. This leads to two social phenomena- (i) people are too fixated abt climbing their own ladder that they don’t care about others. (ii) people develop the sense of entitlement- whatever i have is due to my own effort, why should i give to others?

Globalization creates winners and losers within a country. The coping mechanism is for the winners to share some of the winnings to the losers. We can do it either through “forced redistribution” (like Norway, Sweden with their high tax) or “voluntary redistribution” (like US with their many foundations and charities)

Personally, i think we are still too dependent on MNCs and FDI to be able to impose high taxes like that. And even if we are dependent on SMEs as drivers of growth, I am not sure if any business (local patriot or otherwise) will stay for a small market, and pay high taxes.

So the viable soln to be is “voluntary re-distribution” through the kindness of people’s hearts. As mentioned earlier, the side effect on meritocracy has made us more individualistic and cultivate a sense of entitlement of our rewards. While I am not suggesting that we should get rid of meritocracy (i still think it is a gd way of organizing society), i think we should try to create a meritocracy with a heart.

Yes, people get rewarded according to what they do, but let’s not forget those who are not doing so well.

You speak as though you are one of the elites.

The fact is that Singaporeans are losing their jobs to foreigners. Thousands are unemployed and have no means of putting food on the table for their children.
MM Lee, just came out and said that there will be even more hardcore poor in Singapore as the country progresses.

People are desperate. They want change.

If a ship is heading towards an iceberg and imminent disaster, does it matter whether it alters course to port or starboard. Any change in direction will do.

Millions and millions of foreigners are pouring into Singapore. It doesn’t look like it will stop anything soon. Do you honestly believe Singaporeans want this to continue. Does it matter whether the opposition is to the left or to the right. Any change is direction will do.

    Time for Change. Vote opposition.

PS. Change will come to Singapore whether you like it or not. All you can do is prepare for it.

  10. all singaporeans 25 October 2009

as once said and ask by JBJ why does our ministers in need to draw so much in their pay?? why they need to be paid millions? why that much of citizen money going into their pay? and why there is no free education for poor singaporeans in need? why is gst a must especially for the daily need of food such as rice and so on? why couldn’t the goverment remove that gst? apart from drawing millions in pay cut top it up with gst and taxes why the goverment still have difficulty in giving singaporeans a helping hand rather then demanding for more and more charity and hand out from singaporeans instead of them handing out to singaporeans?

time has tell and the truth is there. as said by JBJ ” i’m back to reform my party into politic not to level with LEE KUAN YEW but for my fellow singaporeans and sadden that more and more singaporeans especially the poor and not being taken care of.

JBJ hope that all singaporeans open thier eyes this time and ask.. why do ministers being paid that high of millions in pay and singaporeans must demand an answer!! singaporeans have the right to know where their money is going!

    thanks for reading.

vote pap out if singaporeans want to better future and to be release from the squeeze of the pap greed after greed

  11. Andrew Loh,

What do you expect from this perfectly bred Platonic Republic after 50 years of PAP rule?

  12. all singaporeans 26 October 2009

foreigners pay more taxes and levy than singaporeans and siingaporeans should be thankful to foreigners? oh really??

    singaporeans:

    1) pay high income tax

    2) pay high property tax

    3)pay high gst

    4)pay high town counsil

    5)pay high SP bills

    6)pay high transportation fare

    7)pay high medical fee

singaporeans are force to accept lower paid jobs

so this is what basically singaporeans are paying for the rest of their life and with low income how do you expect singaporeans to have even a small amount of savings for the future to retire old age?

or is there a retire for us singaporeans? we don’t see that yet.
the pap and the goverment have made a way that singaporeans are to earn within the limit as not to allow us to have savings and our saving is in the hand of the goverment and it is up to them if they wish to give it to us or to pocket in the own banks.

with low income and no savings..singaporeans are merely a slave working harder and harder each day to survive and what we earn are basically not ours, we only see the digits of our pay but do we really own it? NO!!

this is to contain singaporeans in this country as not to allowed any of us lower income earn to flee the country. the goverment knows well what it would be is one singaporeans were to give enough money and savings.., resulting them not wanting to live in singapore and flee away. why is this so? ask the goverment!!

so this is why poor singaporeans have no choice but to accept the indirectly of human slavery and torture and to let us live in pain despite knowing that we are suffering they simply doesn’t care as all this long in their mind is….WHICH SINGAPOREANS DARE TO VOICE UP?? the answer is NONE!!

vote after vote singaporeans blindly give in and hoping the goverment will pity and the old folks and the child to help them come up in live and feel the life they dreaming to live in. but the goverment simply do not have this time for us singaporeans

    all their concern is:
    you work you pay us
    you sick you pay us
you want a house a place of shelter you pay us
you want help? sorry goverment has no money for us singaporeans

this is what will happen if singaporeans keep voting for them and they think we fear them
singaporeans think opposition will make our life more worst.
so are our life now any good? NO!!

as lky says..look at singapore now..yes singapore is beautiful!! with casino,F1 track, hotels, lots and lots of tourist attractions, lots and lots of entertainment for tourist

and what is singaporeans citizen getting out of all this? nothing. we have to keep sweating out daily to support and give the goverment the money they need to make more of this to attract tourist, foreigner working here and to give them support and welcome them with an open heart and help them even to land here with a high paying jobs and living in luxuries properties.

we singaporeans are carrying their loads.

ukrain in the ns?well…why not put the whole china national ,indian ,vietnamese ,japanese, korean and more.. into our army? must as well call in osama bin laden to join our army too as things would be easy for singapore to be destroy in any country finger tips. is this what we call defending our country?
STUPID LEE KUAN YEW!! you are exposing our country to disaster and open our country and selling piace by piece to foreign landing here. is this the promise you made for us singaporeans to vote you for the past 50years??!!

WE WILL VOTE YOU OUT THIS TIME AND WOULD NOT CONSIDER OVER YOUR GOODIES BAGS!!

  13. 160) New Era

“Do you honestly believe Singaporeans want this to continue. Does it matter whether the opposition is to the left or to the right. Any change is direction will do.”

But you see.. the opposition have not gone gone on the record to say they are going to change anything, or steer Singapore in a new direction.

Their performance in parliament- at best is targetted at smaller, more localized policies, not at the big picture or a new direction. At worst, they are putting up token resistance, being implicit accomplice. Even an NMP (Siew) generated more debates on Singapore’s direction than our opposition.

In US, it is quite clear what the parties stand for. Republican (small govt, pro business, etc) and Democrats (big govt, pro unions etc).

What about in Singapore? Do people a “choice of direction”? We are so focused on “choice of parties” that we forget that “choice of direction” matters most. If a country has 10 pro-business parties, does it make a difference to the people? Election becomes a game for elites to capture power but in terms of people, it’s no difference- it’s all one same direction.

IMO, the current opposition has neither articulate a distinct change in direction, or have a good track record of differentiating itself. As much as Americans hate Bush, Obama did not sit down and expect people to vote for him, just because he is the opposition. He has to go all out, fight for votes and articulate what change in direction he sees for US. And even then, he won by a small margin.

The lesson is clear- being opposition by party is not enough. You need to be opposition in ideas/direction too. Would you not agree on this point?

The sad thing is we do not have that… yet.

  14. I agree that the opposition in general doesn’t present itself as capable or strong enough to oppose PAP on any grounds.
There has to be a shift away from just blaming the PAP for everything and condemning their policies. We need to know – if specific policies are dealt away with.. then what? what will the opposition do when we vote them in? An umbrella term such as ‘we want democracy, so we want SDP’ , what kind of democracy do we want? how effective would it be? You realize Singapore still qualifies as a ‘democratic nation’ now? The term democracy is very very loosely defined nowadays. Can we still be efficient and decisive if we are to adapt other forms of democracy (which have not been specified in detail).
Vote change, yes, but change can mean down or up. As many flaws as they have, the PAP has achieved many things we take for granted – safe city, easy access to amenities, good infrastructure. Will the opposition be able to continue to provide these?
Another example. Many people don’t want to blame globalization, but rather the government’s policy to lower worker’s wages. But such a policy exists as our response to more international competition BECAUSE of globalization. We are not the only country to adapt such policies. (which include GST etc. )
Unemployment High in Singapore (4.8%)? how about the US (nearly 10%)?

A bunch of you must be thinking now.. hey this fella sounds like hes from the PAP! but i’m not!
As much as many of you want, i want to see change! i don’t want to see my Singaporean Brothers and Sisters suffer, when i see old citizens having to work till they die collecting cardboard, it strikes a cord in my heart! i agree that money earned at spectacles such as F1 or the Casino does not flow back into society in a manner it is supposed to be. As I mentioned somewhere else here before, I believe opposition to PAP in general needs to be more critical. We criticize w/o offering better indepth solutions (look at the debates in US politics for example). there is no perfect policy or ideology. However, if someone criticizes my plans w/o telling me there is something better, i will continue to pursue it as it is the best available to me .
This i believe is the consensus of many Singaporeans, Singaporeans whom are quietly living their daily lives .( not seeing all this discussion online, or actively keep track of Singapore politics) These are the people such as hawker centre uncles, who spend most of the their time cooking the food we eat, or the cashiers at NTUC. True many of them say , the gahmen makes us pay too much! but they still continue to vote the pap in (by large majorities in some wards), because they see no better alternative! its almost common sense. If you speak to many of them, they feel secure because they grew up thinking that the PAP is the best, and all other parties cannot compare. This is sad, you may think. But no party or opposition leaders in recent Singapore history have stood up and credibly challenged this.

  15. hungryforprogress 26 October 2009

PAP ministers should tell this statement to their sons and daughters: “We must also not allow ourselves to be divided between haves and have-nots, or winners and losers.” Especially Wee Shu Min and also Tan Yong Soon’s son. Practise what you preach, ministers.

  16. Some seem to forget who are in gahment here. They condemn papsies’
critics for not coming up with ideas (“constructive criticisms) to improve
matters while criticizing the papsies. Let’s not forget that the papsies
are being paid multi-$millions to gahment Sinkapoor so why should others,
who are not paid one cent, help them to do their jobs? What do you think
this is, national service? How would you like it if the roles are reversed?

These papsies and their lovers also enjoy laughing at the opposition
parties for not being able to handle the job if they ever came into power.
Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so how can any thinking
person condemn anyone for something that they have not done?!?!

    But opposition parties too???!
If they want to be the govt some day, they SHOULD have some ideas how they want to run the govt. And preferably differently, so that there is real choice of direction/policies.

Honestly, is our benchmark so low that we cannot even expect politicians vying for office to know what alternatives they are going to do if elected?

If our expectation of opposition is such that they don’t need to have any ideas of running the govt and that is the job of the current govt, it is this kind of dependency mentality that locks in the status quo.

‘Greedy’ is such a strong word.

So, we should continue to Trust them that such highest in the world salaries are appropriate.

We should work harder and not complain too much.

so what you are saying is let them earn millions and billions of dollars and we as a singaporeans lower income and high cost and living and keep rising should work even harder trying to reach the goverment and ministers pocket needs?

the question is why they need millions of dollars into their salaries?? just because they are taking care of singapore or singaporeans?
the question is for 10years cleaner salaries has been the same and only increase of just $50 maybe and while ministers goes for increament that sky high??

the question is why poor citizen and lower income was not given the help they need as a citizen as we encounter old folk going to the PAP asking for assistance and keep going and waiting for months before they can even get a $70voucher for ntuc?? thye have bills that they can afford to pay and what they get after begging and begging the MP is a $70 voucher of NTUC?? my GOODNESS!!

just imagine millions in pay and for the last 50years?? still got no money to assist singaporeans?no bull sht

still we are to ask to donate to charity and to work even harder to help ourself and others??
ONCE SAID BY LEE KUAN YEW AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN
if you don’t help yourself then there’s no one would be able to help you include the goverment and mp and all this pap. that is what it means straight forward straight talk!

so if we were to depend on ourself and to help ourself then how is it possible when the goverment is depending too much on our money on invesments and stock share and so on? how can we help ourself when the goverment need us to pay them huge amount of taxes, gst, bills, huge housing payment and 30year of payment and still have an outstanding due to lower income no able to coupe??!!

they have earn enough for all this and yet they can hard assist their own singaporeans and yet they can throw our money into their games and needs?

do ministers and lky need a million and billions dollar home??

oh yeah it is said by lee kuan yew that he have set his own business in europe and a few more countries! so that’s where our singaporeans money goes into their retirement of countless generation of their familee….?!! so does the ministers?? what are that they have been doing for us?? oh yeah a good bags hand out each $200 to $500 and preparing to take that money back from us plus interest in the upcoming increase in gst and taxes and so on?? WOW this is legal loan shark that will nail you up for lifetime!!

as JBJ who was with lee kuan yew from the early days has ask singaporeans to ask them why they need to be paid so much as in millions and billions collected??!!

How can any opp party be able to take the challenge when those papsies and the old man felt threatened, they start using their own court to sue and cripple all of them? Not that there is no credible opp party or member out there. Infact, there are alot of talented people out there, that is why the man is afraid of letting them in.

  26. I repeat the quote below from a great statesman Mr Thomas Jefferson…

    Famous Quote from Thomas Jefferson

“We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.
We must make our election between economy and liberty
    or profusion and servitude.
If we run into such debt, as that we must be taxed in our meat and
in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and
our amusements, for our calling and our creeds…
[we will] have no time to think,
no means of calling our miss-managers to account
but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves
to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers…
And this is the tendency of all human governments.
A departure from principle in one instance
becomes a precedent for [another ]…
till the bulk of society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery…
And the fore-horse of this frightful team is public debt.
Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression.”

“they SHOULD have some ideas how they want to run the govt.”

Ideas are plentiful (very good on paper and on your presentation screen) and you do not need phd material (even students know how to do it) to come out with that kind of cut-and-paste manifesto (with a little bit of change here and there to avoid plagiarism).

More importantly, it is the execution of the ideas that counts and you can only do that after being voted in – e.g policy making. Else, it would be just ideas ( 纸上谈兵), however good it may be on paper.

before opposition can bring out any ideas they have been shut down as we singaporeans gracefully vote for PAP all this while. what different does it make when pap promises alot of wonderful things but once they win they pretend to forget what they talk about and promise. maybe out of 100promises they made they give us 2out of it. the goverment will say..atleast pappies give you rather then nothing. take it or leave it.

so what harm is there to vote the opposition and once they win they will fight for us in parliment. gain power then talk. the best if JBJ team! hope they are coming back to reform even JBJ is not around or similar party who will stand this time. vote for this kind of people.

    MM is wrong!

Social divide is evitable ….. as long as we can overthrow PAP and stop foreigners from invading us.

Here we have a total of 181 postings the so called Minority group “barking” -sure to vote against the PAP and for the Opposition,vs the Silent Majority group who will cast their votes during the General Election and not easy to determine whether they will continue to vote the PAP or vote in as many Opposition into the new Parliament. This is where we need a strong, credible and constructive Opposition leader from the Majority Singapore chinese to lead all the Opposition and take on the PAP and its Elites Ministers and MPs which have failed to live up to the expectation of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. History has taught us that the late JBJ who came from the Minority Singaporean race, had failed and time for us the scout for this new guy who maybe a Modern Lee Kuan Yew or Anwar Ibrahim or a combination of both and give them Hell. Let us pray that this guy will just turn up and let all the Singapore Opposition parties who are now looking for someone to lead them (at present there are none I could think off including a Elite who just took over from his late dad’s party, he is from the Minority Race-I am very sure the Silent Majority Singapore especially the Chinese which made up of more than 77% would like someone from their own race.

After the coming General Election, I guess we will know who’s right and who’s wrong in their projection and speculation.

PS:Many people thought that Obama was going to lose the election for sure cos he’s black. Guess desperate time call for desperate measure.

PAP is very money-faced. They just wanna put as many different types of people into the economy, regardless of whether they are talents or trash, so that we can continue to pay taxes to govt.

The undoing of Singaporeans is the fact that we are mired with a leadership that purports to be a democracy but in reality it is far from it. It is a pseudo-democracy and it is a dictatorship.
Also, this so-called political models that they keep harping on – is utter rubbish and crap!
Frankly, today Singaporeans are in a relatively unfavorable state – eg, high cost of living has been oversold as high standard of livng, subsidized HDB flats though claimed to be offered at reasonable prices is in fact most likey untrue and no independent source(s) have yet verified or HDb has never till today released the actual costing or how they came about with this pricing.
One can add on – medical, transport – all one way traffice. Who are these people who sit in committees or bodies that make recommendations or … people who are yes-man/woman.
Why? Simply, one-party system is in the favour of the ruling party or govt. It is NEVER AND WILL NEVER be transparent or accoutable to the people(citizens)
Do we have an OMBUDSMEN? Do we have checks n balances? Who is checking whom?
These are questions that Singaporeans need to seriously consdier when they vote and not be simply be swayed by short-term money handouts or rebates. All of us know , ti will eventaully be included (hidden) though in price escalation/increases in medical, tranport, …. add on
Also the FT policy is not in the favour of SIngaporeans but to the advantage of the govt. Do other countries allow foreigners to take up PR/citizenship so VERY easily and facilitate them and what is worse is that Singaporeans who were born here and in some ways directy/indirectly conytributed to the country have to COMPETE for jobs, schools and who knows what else is to come. Utter shame that it has come to this.
The benefit to the citizens is a mere trickle effect. It is more of a political tool to leverage and benefit during elections.
Singaporeans, need to wake up and disallow these and seriously consider a two-party system or multi-party system.
