SDP talks to Alex Au of Yawning Bread

In TOC TV • 2,002 views • 8 Comments

On what the Loyal Opposition needs to do in order to become an effective force in Singapore politics, Alex Au said, “The first would be try to address issues more bread and butter. Ultimately, I think a lot of people are very concerned on such things. Secondly, I think opposition parties need to be more sensitive to the fear level in the general population and try to work at a level that ameliorates that fear. What do I mean by that? Doing things in a way that people can participate without risking too much, then gradually build confidence of being engaged.”

There’s almost no dynamism and synergy between the 2 people. Unlike what you see in a show like Letterman, this is like one guy asking questions from a piece of paper, and another just answering them in static order. There’s the issue of timing as well – some of the topics discussed are rather outdated.

That said, this is just the first broadcast, put together with very limited resources. Please make more……

Hi BryanT,

SDP is sensible enough to discern things on their own. SDP didn’t go ahead with the Fajar Market talks. More importantly, SDP has moved away from being personality-centric to party-centric in their community outreach. Perhaps it is time that people like you and I cut some slack for the Singapore Democrats. We should hold PAP to even higher scrutiny since the PAP is in power. Decisions PAP make actually impact our lives substantially. Why did PAP allow the wet market farce to develop? Why did PAP allow HDB to cancel the housing loan program? Why? Why? Why?

It’s a good start. Congrats to the organisers for making good use of the Internet to propagate their aspirations. Alex Au is a wonderfully articulate person, but I fear his language sails clear above the heads of many Singaporeans.
To many of us, he would be like one of those chiak gantang personalities. Nice to listen to, but we don’t know what the heck he is saying.
I hope the next guy or gal to be interviewed would be one who knows how to communicate with the masses. A gritty personnaility with down-to-earth language. Who will call a spade a spade.
But he must know how to say what he wants to say — without getting sued.

From Alex’s response, I can see that he also thinks that the People , in general , are APATHETIC.

In my view, singaporeans are the MOST Apathetic in this world.

This explains why singaporeans are so like that.

You’re comparing this attempt by a bankrupted opposition party in a place like Singapore to David Letterman?

Would you like to contribute $100 for them to improve the program?

The person I respected the most in Singapore since I am a young child: LKY

Till today, I still respect him the most.

I voted for PAP for all those years.

Now I decide to vote for the opposition. For a change. What I cannot stand is they squeezed in so many foreigners in such a short time with such ease of entry for them that we can hardly breathe.

Even my child have to compete 10 times harder for the average school space with the PR,s and foreigner,s children.

I see more poor old citizens who are not taken care of.

I see more rubbish thrown all over the place.

And many more …………… disgusting changes in Singapore.

Because of all this, I decided to vote for the opposition
