Dear Friends,
MARUAH, a local human rights advocacy group, is organising a youth human rights workshop together with UNYAS on the 31st October 2009, 9.00am to 5.30pm at the Singapore Management University.
Entitled ‘whose Right is it anyway?’, some of you might be interested in attending this workshop.
This workshop aims to raise awareness about human rights and sensitise young people to the everyday human rights issues surrounding them, and would feature well-known speakers along with specially designed small-group sessions to engage in human rights.
What YOU can gain out of this:
- Learn more about the basics of human rights and what it can mean to you.
- Join in the interactive session and discussions on rights
- Taking the step forward to get involved in the rights discussion that is slowly gaining momentum in our country.
- Get the opportunity to meet other youths who come to the event with diverse point of views.
Registration is required for this event. You can find out more about the event here: http://maruah.org/2009/10/08/yhrw/ or see the e-flyer below for details.

Will civil and political rights be discussed? They weren’t given any mention in the flyer.
Human rights for the elites.
Foreigner rights for FT.
Dog rights for the ‘lesser locals’.
I would so love to attend. Pity I have upcoming exams to bother about. Apathetic youth here? =/

Good to get involve and one especially the “barking” minority on the site, must always respect the rights of the silent majority who will only exercise their votes come each General Election.

It’s always strange to me that when the issue of “rights” come up for discussion, debate and even armed conflict (when the stronger gang rams its views down the throats of the weaker gang), that the irrefutable BASIC human right is NEVER discussed — i.e.:
The RIGHT to be left ALONE — if you are not physically interfering with anyone else.
However these days it seems no one has the right to be left alone and mind their own business, and choose to associate with whomever they choose on a VOLUNTARY basis.
Politics and government took care of that. You can be peacefully minding your own business and sooner or later some ‘kaypoh’ from a political ideological group, religion or government will come and ‘kachau’ you.
Anyone here agree that by the simple fact that you exist, you have the RIGHT to be left ALONE and only associate with others by your own voluntary choice?
Cheers,

>> “Barking”?
>> Try to improve on your mannerism first; perhaps.
>> PS: You’re the minority in this site.
Learn from the lessons of the older folks who placed their trust in the PAP government who gave up all their rights thinking the government will take care of them and looked what happened to them? Ending up as toilet cleaners and cardboard collectors instead of enjoying their golden years.
Unless youth today want to be like this when you retire in your golden years, it is your responsibility to be educated on human rights and how to exercise it.
The nation’s future is in your collective hands. You decide you want to follow the apathy of the earlier generations or make some positive change.
Start by attending these talks. Thereafter, the rest is up to you.
Oh by the way, in 40 years’ time, you may not even be able to become toilet cleaners or cardboard collectors as these are gradually taken over by foreigners as well.
So maybe we will see more beggars, if they are even allowed to beg in the first place.
the army is serve by ukranians? ok maybe ukranians, china national, india national, africans, americans and so on.
do you singaporeans know what the risk here? we are not talking about short term in 2years to 3years but 10years to come.
we would no longer have our right as a singaporeans our motherland have been lease to foreign country and LKY is collecting the rent every month and would not bother what singaporeans have to say. simple to say he trade our singapore in exchange for his own interest.
if we still do not do something about this then there is many other issue that will become worst and singaporeans will suffer more and simply will be in the hand of foreigners as they have the rights over us in singapore!
foreign country ministers will dip their hands into singaporeans pocket very soon too.
so where do we singaporeans stands? guess what in the sh!t hole.
think of your future singaporeans..,think wisely. think of your own motherland.
this land belong to us.
by all means and what ever the pappies got to say this time let them say. but we singaporeans got one thing to say
WE WILL VOTE YOU OUT OF OUR MOTHERLAND!
this country doesn’t really belongs to you LKY! it belongs to all of us. you are the guardian to hold our hands and we to support you but things had gone too wild as you are not being a guardian but more like a gambler
all singaporeans…realistically speaking, without LKY, would there be a Singapore now?
Vote PAP out of our motherland…wiseful thinking, it is unlikely to happen within the next 2-3 elections. Maybe let’s concentrate and focus on voting for more opposition MPs into the parliament to create some noise and challenges the pappies first!
Hmmm…looking at the speakers list, it is another well disguised event to promote GLBT’s rights rather than human rights!!!!!
Yes, we must beware of movements that push their agenda without being transparent.
If you have further information that this Human Rights event is actually a Gay Rights event, PAP sponsored event, or anything which is less than transparent, please contact us at sgfreespeechtransparency [at] gmail.com or you can visit our website which is linked above.
[We are reposting this as The Online Citizen filter censored us the first time round.]
I’m posting my comments the 2nd time, the first being moderated and delted by TOC…
=========
Robox, I know all this while you are a gay activist, and I do not have any expectations for you to agree with those who peeved at how GLBTs are trying to infiltrate our younger generations, and trying to poison them with wayward sexual orientation and trying to justify homosexuality as normal and natural.
You talked about transparency, was the GLBTs transparent in their activities and the way AWARE have promoted homosexuality in their CSE programs? Please don’t talk cock here, would you?
From all your previous postings, I also know that you will oppose anything for the sake of opposing. So not surprising, you would want to deliberately paint anything white as black given every opportunity and anyway you want to , so long as it achieve the objectives of making it seems that you are right and everyone else is wrong.
Anyway, I have never associated gays’ rights as human rights. To me, it is an illness, a disease and a slow poison that human beings should seek to avoid at all cost (just like we would want to eliminate Aids and cancer).
However, I do see that human rights is something that faggots will always try to associate with or hide behind, so as to broaden their support base and gained legitimacy for their wayward sexual preferences!
There’s lots of human rights forum and activities that one can participate in, and there’s proper lessons that one can attend to gain a healthy perspectives of human rights…so there’s no need to go for one that is highly moderated and dressed-up by known gay activists!
Hi Everyone,
LGBTs are humans too. Please don’t denigrate them.
Human dignity is intrinsic. Let’s respect everyone.
Hi Robox,
Please chill.
Cheers

Having said what I’ve said in my last post, I hope that Alex Au would not just devote himself with the rights of LBGT only but broader aspects of human rights, like to right to JUSTICE being free, fair and transparent; and others rights as defined in the Constitution etc.
I think its quite far fetched to conclude that this workshop is pro-gay rights just because Alex Au is a speaker. Alex Au speaks out on a lot of issues and not just gay rights. Just take a look at yawningbread.org.
Braema Mathi and Siew Kum Hong also speak out on a wide range of issues relating to civil rights.
I think credit must be given to the organisers for even daring to hold such an event in Singapore. We definitely need more human rights education here.
Unfortunately, when you put the 3 names (Alex Au, Braema and Siew Kum Hong) together, the first impression that anyone gets is gays’ rights!
These 3 are so synonymous with gays’ rights and activities, that it is pretty difficult for others to believe they do not have any hidden LGBT agenda within anything they do.
Whose fault was it?

Please do not conveniently twists and make it looks as though the government had “endorsed” and "approved" the activities of LGBTs through their disapproval of the fundie Christians’ actions in the AWARE incident.
Let's not forget that the same government had also come down hard and banned AWARE's CSE too for their covert and sneaky attempt to normalize and naturalize homosexuality.
In this whole incident, AWARE had already lost all its credibility in the eyes of the government, and the LGBT militants had also successfully waken-up the mainstream society to be more aware of their sneaky agenda and activities as well.
Respects in this sense must work both ways and from both sides!

Dear Mavis
I am sorry but your comments are inaccurate and a betrayal of your worst insecurities and tinted glasses.. Alex, and Siew Kum Hong may be gay rights advocates but they are strong advocates for liberal human rights if you would bother do look at ANYTHING else apart from the pro LGBT parts of their writings and speeches
Bramme has worked for Women’s rights and for the rights of abused women all her life again yes LGBT rights are part of her belief system so it really depends on how much YOU or ANYONE places one aspect of their beliefs over all other
Mavis the fact is they bothered and they cared, to speak up on rights for all sorts of people. You chose only to look at one element of all their work and that is frankly disgusting and a reflection of your own intolerances
Where are the strong religious christians then and why are they not joining the human rights debate on areas in which they can find common ground with people like Brathee, Alex and Siew ? Or is sexuality , sex education the be all and end all
Locke
Man has only one fundamental right – the right to his own life.
All other kind of rights are corollaries – right to one’s own property, to one’s freedom of speech, to one’s religion, to abortion, etc.
Anyone who violate any of these rights cannot be said to be an advocate of human rights.
