Civil servant pay should be “market competitive”: Manpower Minister

It has served us well thus far. We’ve been able to attract, retain and have a good civil service.

I am curious, pre-existing, we had a perm sec who can go to France to earn his little michellin star.

So now civil servants want to vacation at which geographical location that requires market competitive remuneration packages?

But that said, if civil service pay so well, who want to work in private sector, the place that would generate the most revenue for contribution to the relevant authorities?

I wonder

They are paid millions, average civil servants are still lowly paid. And not to mention they have 12 months discretionary bonuses from the PM and the PM himself. They always take care of themselves – the elites.

To pay average civil servants this low and trying to show us that they care?

If civil servants are to be paid market competitive rate, then civil servants must also take on market competitive responsibilities and liabilities. If they make a big blunder, such as in Mas Selamat escape case or the Temasek losses of $58 billion of taxpayers’ and/or CPF money, they should be fired immediately, or put to prison to contemplate their wrongs and repent, and also made to apologise to the people without any reservations.

You cannot treat them the same as private sector and yet refused to take the same risks as the private sector does.

You cannot have the cake and eat it.

Remember, the salaries and bonuses to be paid to civil servants come from the people, the taxpayers. The taxpayers are their pay masters, and they are the servants of the taxpayers. It is not the other way round, which is rampant nowadays – civil servants tend to think that they are “HELPING” the people. But in fact, they are not. They are to SERVE the people!

Wake up all taxpayers, say NO to such irresponsible and unfair ways!

I think the quote is out of context.

Sure, I am against further pay rise for government officials. But Mr Gan here is just talking about a modest bonus for the rank and file civil servants, those that were not earning that much compared to the anybody in the corporate sector. A bonus of $700 to office workers doesn’t seem very out of line to me.

The civil service is market competitive place of the economy.
Its the private sector that generate growth and resources to the economy,
while the civil service consumes part of that resources.
That explains why in most other other countries, except ours, the top
honchos of the civil service can never be as well paid as those in the
private sector

It is competitative and efficient that a Permanent Secretary can take 5 weeks leave to learn how to cook French Cuisine at tremendous cost whilst there are thousands of citizens who can barely survive in the lprivate sector.?

I know of several indiciduals who work less than 2 hours a day in the Govt. Service…….as much as there are laggards in the3 privste sector there equally as much in the government Service…….
Mr. Gan should go into the private sector and let us see how much pay He can command.

Plus civil servants enjoy so much non-monetary benefit such as job security.
