Potong Pasir Town Council rebuts ST report

The following is a letter to the Straits Times (ST) by Mr Wilfred Leung, a town councilor with Potong Pasir Town Council. The ST has not published the letter thus far. The Online Citizen thanks Mr Leung for allowing us to publish it here.

MP for Potong Pasir, Mr Chiam See Tong, with residents

I refer to today’s ST report, “Party will do something right for Potong Pasir”.

The report seems to imply that voters in Potong Pasir have been shortchanged because they did not vote for PAP. I beg to differ.

After the last election, the Potong Pasir Town Council has work hard to implement various upgrading programs to enhance the whole of Potong Pasir, bringing residents many benefits and more convenience.

Major repair and redecoration works were carried out at Potong Pasir including the latest precinct at Lorong 8 Toa Payoh. Covered walkways have been built in Toa Payoh, including the much talked about walkway that links Potong Pasir MRT to Block 147, in which Mr. Sitoh Yih-Pin did not renew the maintenance on the Solar Powered Lamps after he lost. The Town Council have replaced 22 Lifts for free just before the recent announcement of HDB’s Lift Upgrading Program.

In our Meet-The-People Sessions, volunteers at the MP’s Desk have worked hard within our means to meet the needs of the residents, and whenever necessary, we have referred residents to the CDC and Potong Pasir CCC for immediate financial assistance via the Comcare fund.

Our activities have been very well received by many residents. This year alone, our volunteers have organized trips to Medan, Batam, Malaysia and Xiamen China for hundreds of resident. Our annual Lantern festival event which was organized in a no frills, but yet very heartfelt celebration, have attracted close to 500 residents this year.

The Singapore People’s Party, which administers the Meet the people session and mobilizes the alternative grassroots volunteers, does have not have the unfair advantage of Mr Sitoh of tapping on the resources of the SouthEast CDC or the Potong Pasir Community Centre to organize social programmes to win the hearts of the voters.

Despite the odds, MR Chiam See Tong, with the support of loyal residents and supporters have done well the last 25 years. Potong Pasir Voters and volunteers for Opposition MP Chiam See Tong are the ones with real Guts and not PAP activists as mentioned in the report.

We will continue to work hard for the voters of Potong Pasir, and we believe we might have also won over some PAP loyalists in recent years with our humble and sincere desire to do well.

Good to know that some people recognise that money is not everything when it comes to winning the hearts and minds of the people.

Doing something for the good of the residents and on top of that it is done for free. The PAP will never ever do such “stupid” things.

Congratulations! Potong Pasir Town Council. I am surprised to know that PPTC actually replaced 22 lifts for free in Potong Pasir. Good work. I am sure majority of the Potong Pasir residents appreciate you putting the need of the residents as the first priority instead of cost like what the PAP practises.

PAP sucks
Nov 2, 2009 17:35

Just shows how much the PAP sucks. They won’t lift a finger if you don’t pay them $100,000 a day or give the Town Councils money so they gamble it away.

Will this reply ever see the light of day in the Straits Times? I should hope so, seeing that Sylvia Lim’s reply was deemed harmless enough to publish. :)

Salute to Mr Chaim and his hard working grassroots leaders. I am sure you have the support of many who lives in and even outside of Potong Pasir.

Mr Chaim and all of you are a beacon of light that exemplifies what it means to work the ground, understand the people’s plights, garner support and having the simple sincerity of serving the people. This is in such sharp contrast to scholars and civil servants who are being ushered into the political scene on a first class ticket, oops I mean walkover.

People voted Government in to serve the community and not to burden them with endless increases of health, transport, utilities etcs
Leaving everything to Grassroots ( have never seen them ), while they sit comfortably in their ivory tower for feedbacks ( mostly positives ) shows lack
of knowledge on the ground.
Feting them like some celebrity or royalty when they should be serving their
constituencies in events irks quite a few people.
Showing a human face only during campaigning – What Hypocrites !

How worse can it get in an opposition ward ?

Isn’t it about time that we voters from other constituencies start thinking to vote for more opposition candidates in Parliamnet to protect our interests, at least to have more dissenting opinions presented against PAP’s roughshod policies !

Is my understanding correct:

1. The People elect a team to SERVE the People and the Country regardless of race, language, religion.

2. The team elected should Serve the whole country and not just certain people.

3. In a Democracy, Elections are conducted to give mandate to a team to Serve the CITIZENRY.

If so, should those who did not choose the winning party be penalised in any way?

I feel that Everyone should be served because to Serve the Country means to Serve ALL CITIZENs. Wards are just Fractions of a country.

PAP is utter rubbish. Almost all MPs (if not all) are part-timers. Their MP allowance is only small change to them, so do you think they will spend their time in their ward? Better get the money in their directorship companies – that’s where their money $$ lies.

Pity all those “gong gong” grassroot activitists – doing their MP’s jobs and yet when it comes to election, a “Parachute PAP candidate” who has never worked the ground gets elected into office. How stupid can the grassroot activists get?

Compare with both the opposition MPs? The resident gets them full-time! No distraction, fully dedicated to serving the residents. How to compare?

Voters in PAP wards better wake up from their slumber.

PAP MPs join politics to further their career and line their pockets with money.

They are directors of many companies and collect fees as a form of “pocket money”

I believe quite a number of PAP town councils lost millions in the recent economic meltdown. What actions were taken against their dereliction of duty?

We cannot but conclude that they are a greedy, incompetent bunch.

Nov 2, 2009 23:25

Congratulations to Mr Chiam and his merry men n women! Well done!

The money made flows back to the residents of the constituency. While it is important and laudable that PPTC did the upgrading of lifts for free, the fact remain that PPTC gave back to the residents what they rightfully deserved instead of lining their own pocket like what the others are doing. All the more their effort is noble as it was done quietly without much fanfare. Unlike some other MP’s, even planting a small little tree is national news.

Please keep up the good work. There is a wise saying (literally translated from chinese) that People are doing and heaven is watching. (人在做,天在看)。

What PPTC had done, and I am confident is still doing, gives hope that we still have good leaders (from the opposition).

To TOC Admin, please run an article to inform readers about this good work, it should not go unnoticed.

You sure or NOT
Nov 2, 2009 23:32

It has been very rewarding for those who gave them undivided loyalty, multi-million dollar pay, high positions in GLCs, directorships. Honestly, those who joined PAPs are for $$$/career, not for citizens.

Look at the massive losses at Temasek/GIC and Town councils, already speaks volume of what they have been self-praising “invincibility”.

Now they have gotten very greedy. To cover the gaps of the losses, also ensure max profitability of GLCs – what have they done? Look at the cost of living – rental, transport, elect/water, taxi, erps, hdb etc? Look at our wages? What kind of slogan – “Cheaper, faster and better?”

If you are not going to act? After the next election, dont regret. GST would be up 10% straight, ministers’ pay review also blah blah. And then second round of increases on everything.

Is this what you want?

If voters are not blind to see who the real public servants of Singapore are, then you need to vote them in during next GE. They will bring with them sincerity, hardwork and intelligence that you will never get with fat PAP monkeys. Stop dreaming for the days of old when PAP actually worked for the people. Wake up to the fact that they just cling on to their past glory and hide in their ivory tower.

Vote in the opposition so we have a voice. They are our true representatives now.

Potong Pasir is one very fine example of what Singaporeans can do to put in place an alternative to the PAP. It has taken Mr Chiam See Tong 25 years to not only build trust between himself and the residents he serves but also to be able to build up a reasonably healthy fund to be able to, for example, upgrade lifts for free and to hold no-frills celebrations that have residents coming together out of a community bond that is not superficial and staged.

It is all these good work that the PAP is attempting to smear and devalue. The LUP program offered to the residents of PP is not because the PAP suddenly feel magnanimous toward the residents. It is because it cannot continue to ignore that Mr CST has been able to beat them at their own game by introducing lift upgrading for free, and doing a better job than any MP could.

Now, because of the game the PAP is playing, it has further reduced the hard-earned fund that is paying for the free lift upgrading, to naught. How can any good citizens stand by and continue to take this sort of treatment the PAP is dishing out to the residents of PP, and Singaporeans?

Time and time again, we have been fooled to the extent that we are now treated as fools. How the PAP can introduce things that are so bad by making it sound so good can only be done by the PAP – because it has over the years honed their shenanigan skill – and perfected it with the support of blind Singaporeans.

PP residents are the flag-bearers of Singaporeans who are not as blind. My hats off to them. They will be remembered for posterity.

Hi JF,

No one needs to move in to PP or Hougang, both are doing just fine. What we need is for the rest of us to show the same courage like those of these two truly Singaporean enclaves, to bring the PAP to the realisation that it cannot continue to bully the people it serves.

To prove that Shanmugam is utterly wrong in trying to beg for better rating of Shitty Times in the Press freedom without border. I have some words for Shanmugam, does your Straits Times have the gut to publish the above letter? What is the point of ranting for better ranking of Singapore main stream media when it is provened, to the world openly, that ST is even fearful to publish such genuine letter to the forum. Gemami #28;

You can’t be more right, it’s obvious that Potong Pasir and Hougang Voters never fear voting in the Oppositions. I salute them for making righteous choice, they never cowered under threats and were not bought over by inducements and promises and they know not to respect people with little integrities.

Yes, voters in other wards should emulate the Voters of Hougang and Potong Pasir.

Hey TOC, why not do a report on how PP looks like today, with its facilities and amenities or lack, what the residents say, etc and compare it with a report on the situation in adjoining wards. This kind of reporting will substantiate what many of us believe — that PP is not doing too badly despite the lack of funds from the government. It would show that you do not need million-dollar sophisticated thinking to get the job done.
However, if it is seen that PP is a rundown town, it would serve to underscore that despite the lack of “upgrading”, the residents are loyal to Chiam and company. That would give us something to think about — that principles will not be sacrificed for mere material comfort, seductive though such material amenities may be.

To Watcher

Those people who “volunteer” in grassroot organizations are certainly not stupid…

They have their own agendas and if they are not benefiting from it, do you think they will still be there?

The ancient Chinese are wise – they have long noted that “people will strive for their own benefits, otherwise heaven and earth will fall apart”.

Hi Patriot, my dear friend,

Thank you for concurring with me. I know that many have been rejoicing after the announcement was made that PP will get their LUP. To me, I felt insulted by such news. I had spent a part of my life in and around Potong Pasir visiting friends and taking part in activities organized there, even though I was never a resident there.

I have chatted with Mr Chiam at the coffee shop there and in his office. He had even gave assurance to my friends and I when one day we were locked out of our car, that he would personally look after it until we returned with the spare key.

Mr Chiam has beaten the PAP on many occasions, like the ‘Deny them two-thirds’ election strategy, the continual success in winning each election, and the building of heartland libraries (which the PAP later took as their own).

It is because of this that we have to listen harder when the PAP come out with goodies for the residents there. It had tried to entice the supporters of CST with (what was it) … an Olympic size swimming pool?

When bribery did not work, they have now turn to playing the underhand card – by doing what CST is doing there – but to do it with the huge mechanism that it has at its disposal. Of course, it is a case of David against Goliath but we must not forget who the eventual victor was.

So we too, in our own wards, can give the people of PP and Hougang the break they deserve for so valiantly standing up for their fellow Singaporeans, and make a conscious effort to bring about fairness from this government. We need to lend our voices and our votes to them this coming election. 25 years is too long for one man and one brave ward.

Even those who have supported the PAP in these wards have to re-think their support, for they are worthless (no, not guts) in the eyes of the PAP – more worthless than those who have voted for the Opposition in PAP-held wards.

The PAP supporters were punished together with the Opposition’s supporters in PP whereas, the Opposition supporters all over the island were rewarded together with those who supported the PAP.

What kind of a system is this? Please think hard about this before you cast your next vote.
